A reliable FFmpeg-to-YouTube health check needs to watch two separate things: whether FFmpeg is making progress locally, and whether YouTube is receiving and reporting a healthy stream. A running FFmpeg process alone does not prove the broadcast is reaching viewers. Monitor FFmpeg’s program-friendly -progress output and exit status, then check YouTube’s streamStatus, healthStatus.status and healthStatus.configurationIssues. Use YouTube’s monitor preview for the final picture-and-sound check.

What the health check should detect

Build the monitor around distinct signals rather than one generic “online” flag. The local checks can identify an exited process or stale encoder progress. YouTube’s API can report whether it is receiving data and whether it has detected stream-health issues. A preview check can confirm what a person actually sees and hears.

Signal What it tells you What it cannot establish by itself
FFmpeg exit status Whether the local encoder process ended, and whether it returned an error code. Whether YouTube received a healthy stream before it ended.
FFmpeg -progress updates Whether FFmpeg is continuing to emit program-readable progress records. Whether the output is reaching YouTube or the picture and sound look right.
YouTube streamStatus Whether YouTube reports receiving data and the state of the configured stream. Whether viewers are seeing and hearing the intended content.
YouTube healthStatus Whether YouTube has reported configuration-related health issues. Whether the stream is visually or audibly satisfactory to a viewer.
Monitor preview A human can inspect incoming picture and sound. A continuous automated signal unless a person or separate system checks it.

Set up local FFmpeg monitoring

Keep progress and diagnostics separate

Use FFmpeg’s -progress option to send machine-readable updates to a destination your supervisor can read, such as a pipe. Keep diagnostic output on its own log channel, commonly standard error, so the monitor does not have to parse human-oriented status lines. Record the FFmpeg process exit code and the time each new progress record arrives.

FFmpeg documents a default -stats_period of 0.5 seconds for progress and statistics updates. That is an output cadence, not a recommended health-check polling interval or a universal timeout. Choose a stale-progress threshold for your own stream and environment; allow enough margin for normal pauses, input behavior and scheduling delays.

Use this decision logic

  1. Start FFmpeg under a supervisor. Preserve its process identifier, exit code, standard error log and progress channel.
  2. Refresh the local heartbeat only on new progress records. If no new record arrives for your chosen stale threshold while the process is still alive, report “local progress stale” or “probable local stall,” not “YouTube is down.”
  3. Alert on unexpected process exit. Include the exit code and a useful excerpt from the diagnostic log, while redacting credentials.
  4. Poll YouTube’s Live Streaming API for the stream bound to the broadcast. Read status.streamStatus, status.healthStatus.status and status.healthStatus.configurationIssues.
  5. Combine the signals into separate alert states. Do not collapse local encoder failure, remote ingest trouble and unknown health data into the same message.
  6. For a test broadcast, verify the incoming feed in YouTube’s monitor preview. An API status check is not a substitute for checking picture and sound.

The exact API request and token handling depend on your application and authorized channel. YouTube Live Streaming API methods require OAuth 2.0; service-account flow is not supported. Authorize a YouTube user/channel that can access the relevant stream resource. Store access and refresh tokens in a protected credential store, and never place bearer tokens in a query string or logs.

Suggested alert states

  • Process exited: FFmpeg stopped. Report its exit code and diagnostic context.
  • Process alive, progress stale: likely local encoder or input stall. Check the source, process and local output logs.
  • Progress continues, YouTube inactive or in error: investigate the output connection, stream configuration and YouTube ingest state.
  • YouTube active, health bad: report the returned configuration issue details so the operator can address YouTube’s diagnosis.
  • YouTube health noData: classify health as unknown or not yet reported; do not call it healthy.
  • YouTube active and healthy, viewer still reports a problem: inspect the monitor preview and verify picture and sound manually.

Interpret YouTube’s stream and health fields

streamStatus is the ingest-state signal

YouTube uses status.streamStatus to describe whether it is receiving data and whether the configured stream is ready or in an error or inactive state. In YouTube’s documented broadcast workflow, an active value indicates that YouTube servers are receiving data from the encoder. It does not establish that the viewer experience is good.

healthStatus.status is a separate signal

  • good: YouTube reports no issues at warning severity or worse.
  • ok: YouTube reports no error-severity issue.
  • bad: YouTube reports one or more error-severity issues.
  • noData: YouTube has no health information available. Treat this as unknown, not healthy.

Retain the issue details in alerts

When configurationIssues is present, include each returned issue’s type, severity, reason and description in the alert. YouTube’s issue categories include video ingestion starvation and problems or suboptimal values involving audio/video settings, frame rate, bitrate, keyframe interval, codecs, and primary or backup streams. For example, YouTube describes video ingestion starvation as insufficient video arriving to maintain smooth streaming, which can cause viewer buffering. Prefer the returned diagnosis over trying to infer every remote problem from FFmpeg’s local logs.

Choose polling and stale-progress thresholds

There is no single interval or timeout that suits every deployment. Set the API polling cadence and stale-progress threshold according to the stream’s latency needs, expected channel count and operational reliability requirements. Add alert hysteresis or repeated-failure checks if transient delays would otherwise generate noisy alerts. The 0.5-second FFmpeg default is only the documented progress/statistics update period; it does not prescribe how often your monitor should poll or when it should page someone.

Confirm current API quota documentation before deploying a monitor at scale. A generally appropriate polling interval and method-specific quota cost are not established here, so do not assume that frequent polling is free or suitable for every number of channels.

Check RTMP or RTMPS output configuration

For RTMP-family output, FFmpeg’s protocol syntax is composed of server, port, application and stream/playpath components. Keep the stream key secret: do not print a fully expanded output URL into alerts, shell traces or general-purpose logs.

For RTMPS, verify that the URL uses the RTMPS protocol, the valid YouTube ingestion endpoint, port 443, and the correct hostname for TLS SNI. YouTube associates SSL errors with an incorrect server name, port or TLS setup. A timeout can also occur if cleartext RTMP is sent to an RTMPS endpoint. Diagnose these separately from a local progress stall.

Test the monitor before relying on it

  1. Start with a test broadcast. Confirm that the bound live stream reports active before transitioning the broadcast to testing.
  2. Check the preview. Inspect the incoming picture and sound in YouTube’s monitor preview; record that this is a human verification, not an API result.
  3. Exercise the local failure path. In a safe test, stop the encoder and verify that the monitor detects process exit and captures the exit code.
  4. Exercise stale progress. Confirm that a still-running process with no fresh progress is reported as a probable local stall rather than a confirmed YouTube outage.
  5. Exercise remote health handling. Verify that the alert preserves the API’s status and issue fields, and that noData remains unknown.
  6. Review secrets in every output. Check alerts, logs and process supervision output for stream keys, OAuth tokens or expanded credential-bearing URLs.

Troubleshoot common health-check failures

Symptom Likely area What to check
FFmpeg exits unexpectedly Local process, input or output Exit code and FFmpeg diagnostic log; keep the stream key redacted.
FFmpeg is alive but progress has stopped Local encoder or input stall Whether the input is still producing data, whether progress output is being read, and whether the threshold is too aggressive.
Progress continues but YouTube says inactive or error Output connection or stream configuration RTMP/RTMPS URL components, stream binding, network path and YouTube’s returned state.
RTMPS SSL error or timeout TLS transport configuration RTMPS protocol, ingestion hostname/SNI, port 443 and TLS setup; ensure cleartext RTMP is not being used for an RTMPS endpoint.
YouTube health is noData Health data unavailable Keep the result unknown, retain the latest streamStatus, and check again according to your chosen polling policy.
YouTube is active and healthy but viewers report issues Viewer-side picture or sound Use the monitor preview and verify both image and audio manually.
