To monitor a Mac mini during a YouTube stream, use three views together: Activity Monitor for Mac-wide CPU and network activity, OBS for encoding performance and dropped frames, and YouTube Live Control Room for platform-side stream health. None of these views alone identifies every bottleneck, but comparing them helps distinguish local resource pressure from connection or ingest problems.
Check the Mac mini’s CPU in Activity Monitor
- Open Activity Monitor and select the CPU tab.
- Watch the CPU activity over time. Apple defines System as CPU capacity used by macOS processes, User as capacity used by apps and their processes, and Idle as capacity not currently in use.
- For a compact current view, choose Window > CPU Usage. To see recent activity over time, choose Window > CPU History. Apple also documents a live CPU graph in the Dock.
Look for sustained activity alongside the OBS symptoms you are investigating, rather than treating one momentary CPU reading as a diagnosis. Activity Monitor can help identify whether other applications or macOS processes are using resources while OBS is running. Apple’s instructions: View CPU activity in Activity Monitor on Mac.
Watch network activity in Activity Monitor
- In Activity Monitor, select Network.
- Review data received/sec and data sent/sec for throughput, along with total data received and sent and the packets in and out counts.
- Use the graph menu’s Data option to follow data throughput or Packets to follow packet activity.
- For a glanceable view, choose View > Dock Icon > Show Network Usage.
These are system-level network readings: they include traffic from other apps, not just the YouTube stream. Activity Monitor therefore cannot, by itself, tell you exactly how much of the displayed throughput OBS is sending. See Apple’s View network activity in Activity Monitor on Mac.
Use OBS to separate encoding trouble from delivery trouble
When OBS reports encoding overload or choppy output
Check Activity Monitor for resource-heavy apps running alongside OBS, then follow OBS’s performance troubleshooting guidance. OBS specifically recommends Activity Monitor as part of investigating performance on macOS: Encoding Performance Troubleshooting.
#1 Best Overall
- Apple-designed M1 chip for a giant leap in CPU, GPU, and machine learning performance
- 8-core CPU packs up to 3x faster performance to fly through workflows quicker than ever*
- 8-core GPU with up to 6x faster graphics for graphics-intensive apps and games*
- 16-core Neural Engine for advanced machine learning
- 8GB of unified memory so everything you do is fast and fluid
When OBS dropped frames are increasing
OBS associates rising dropped-frame counts with a connection to the streaming server that is unstable or unable to keep up with the configured bitrate. Compare the configured bitrate with tested upload capacity and investigate the connection path; a high Activity Monitor network reading alone does not establish that the stream is reaching the ingest server reliably. OBS’s connection guidance, dated September 30, 2024, is at Stream Connection Troubleshooting.
Check YouTube’s stream health before and during the broadcast
- Before the event, test your upload connection.
- Run a representative test stream with audio and motion similar to what you plan to broadcast.
- During the event, monitor stream health and messages in YouTube Live Control Room.
- Choose the encoder’s resolution, frame rate, and bitrate with the available internet connection in mind. Use YouTube’s current recommendations for the intended codec, resolution, and frame rate, since its bitrate ranges vary by configuration.
YouTube’s official settings and recommendations are on Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

Interpret the three views together
| Diagnostic view | What it helps you assess | What it does not establish on its own |
|---|---|---|
| Activity Monitor CPU | Mac-wide CPU activity, including system and app processes. | Whether YouTube is receiving a healthy stream. |
| Activity Monitor Network | Mac-wide throughput and packet activity. | Which portion of traffic belongs to OBS or whether the ingest connection is stable. |
| OBS performance and dropped frames | Encoding/performance symptoms and stream-connection trouble indicators. | YouTube’s complete platform-side health picture. |
| YouTube Live Control Room | Platform-side stream health and messages. | Which local app or Mac process caused a problem. |
Start with the symptom: encoding overload points you toward local performance checks; rising dropped frames point you toward delivery and bitrate checks; YouTube’s messages show what the platform reports receiving. Cross-check the views rather than treating CPU load, throughput, or a single status indicator as conclusive by itself.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesOr let it run in the cloud
If your goal is an always-on YouTube stream rather than monitoring a Mac mini that must stay involved, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it plays your uploads at the quality you made them, up to 4K 60fps, for one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly is $9.99 per month.
