Monitor the machine that runs your encoder, then check OBS and YouTube for stream-delivery problems. OVHcloud provider monitoring, encoder CPU usage, and the connection from OBS to YouTube answer different questions; none should be treated as a substitute for the others. The exact OVHcloud dashboard and operating-system steps depend on whether you use Web Hosting, a VPS, or a Dedicated Server, and where OBS runs.
First, identify where OBS runs
CPU load from video encoding occurs on the machine running the encoder. If OBS runs on an OVHcloud instance, monitor that instance’s CPU and network activity. If OBS runs on your local computer while another part of the setup is hosted at OVHcloud, monitor both systems for their separate roles: the local computer is encoding and sending the stream, while the OVHcloud service may have its own availability or workload to observe.
Also identify the OVHcloud product and operating system. OVHcloud’s published instructions differ by service: its infrastructure graphs described for Web Hosting are not universal VPS or Dedicated Server controls, and provider-side Dedicated Server monitoring is a reachability signal rather than a view of OBS performance.
Understand what each monitoring layer tells you
| Layer | What it helps answer | What it cannot establish by itself |
|---|---|---|
| OVHcloud service or provider monitoring | Whether a service or host is responding, and—where the product supports it—whether resource graphs show activity or limit events. | Provider reachability does not show whether OBS is overloaded or whether the encoder’s upload path can sustain its configured bitrate. Web Hosting graphs apply to that product, not automatically to VPS or Dedicated Servers. See OVHcloud’s Dedicated Server monitoring guidance and Web Hosting statistics documentation. |
| Encoder operating system and OBS | Whether the encoder machine is under CPU pressure and whether OBS reports encoding, rendering, or network-delivery symptoms. | OBS counters do not, on their own, identify which network operator or segment is responsible for an unstable route to the ingest server. |
| YouTube Live Control Room | Whether YouTube reports stream health problems or messages during the event. | A stream-health warning does not by itself prove that OVHcloud is at fault. |
Set up a useful baseline before going live
- Use a representative test. Run the intended resolution, frame rate, scene complexity, audio, and motion. YouTube recommends testing upload speed and performing a representative preflight before the event. A static test scene may not expose the same encoding or network behavior as your real stream.
- Record the configuration. Note the encoder, codec, resolution, frame rate, and configured bitrate so you can compare actual behavior with the settings in use.
- Observe the encoder machine. Check its operating-system CPU and network activity while the test is running. The exact control or command depends on the OS and OVHcloud service; the available OVHcloud guidance does not establish one universal dashboard path for every product.
- Open OBS Statistics. Watch dropped frames and any encoding or rendering lag indicators during the test, not just after the stream has ended.
- Check YouTube Live Control Room. Review stream health and messages during the event. YouTube’s guidance is to “During the event, monitor the stream health and review messages.” See Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
Check that your stream settings fit the connection
YouTube’s published encoder guidance specifies RTMP or RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), a recommended two-second keyframe frequency that should not exceed four seconds, and frame rates up to 60 fps. YouTube recommends RTMPS to encrypt the stream in transit to and through Google’s servers. Platform guidance can change, so check the current encoder-settings page when configuring a new stream.

Bitrate recommendations depend on codec, resolution, and frame rate. These examples are YouTube’s published values, not a guarantee that your particular upload path can sustain the stream:
| Video setting | YouTube-published minimum bitrate | YouTube-published recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps, H.264 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps, AV1 or H.265 | 2 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| 480p at 30 fps, H.264 | 0.4 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
| 360p at 30 fps, H.264 | 0.4 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
Use the row matching your actual codec and output settings; do not treat one bitrate as suitable for every stream. YouTube recommends testing the available upload speed. There is no universal CPU threshold or upload-headroom percentage established for all codecs, presets, workloads, and connections, so judge the test against your own sustained behavior and diagnostics rather than applying an arbitrary cutoff.

Diagnose symptoms by layer
CPU saturation or encoding and rendering lag
If the encoder machine’s CPU is saturated or OBS reports encoding or renderer lag, investigate the encoder settings, scene workload, and available hardware encoding on that machine. Compare the symptom with your baseline test. The cited guidance does not establish a universal CPU percentage threshold or a verified hardware recommendation for every setup.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsNetwork-dropped frames in OBS
OBS distinguishes network delivery trouble from encoding load. Its Help Portal explains that when the “Dropped frames” counter is increasing and the connection square is yellow or red, the connection to the server is unstable or cannot keep up with the set bitrate. OBS also notes that dropped frames or intermittent disconnections indicate a network issue between the computer and the remote stream ingest server. Compare the configured bitrate with sustained upload capacity and assess connection stability; the symptom alone does not prove OVHcloud’s network is responsible. See OBS Stream Connection Troubleshooting.

Host unreachable or provider availability alert
Treat an unreachable server or provider availability alert as a host or reachability incident. Consult the status and monitoring details for the exact OVHcloud service. That alert is separate from evidence that OBS is overloaded or that the encoder-to-ingest connection is dropping frames.
OVHcloud Web Hosting resource graphs
If—and only if—the relevant service is an OVHcloud Web Hosting plan, its Control Panel documentation places infrastructure statistics under the service’s Statistics and logs tab. The documented graphs include CPU usage, outgoing connections, resource-limit events, and other statistics. Do not assume these Web Hosting controls exist on a VPS or Dedicated Server.
