To monitor a nonstop YouTube stream on Hetzner Cloud, collect metrics from inside the Linux server with Prometheus Node Exporter, scrape them with Prometheus, and view trends in Grafana. Hetzner’s Prometheus/Grafana app image can reduce setup work, but its components must be activated after the server boots. Monitor CPU and available memory over time; there is no universal CPU or memory percentage that guarantees a healthy stream.
What to monitor—and what the numbers mean
Hetzner’s cloud-level graphs and metrics from inside the guest operating system answer different questions. For stream-server CPU and memory, use guest-level metrics: Node Exporter exposes host hardware and kernel metrics, and Prometheus collects them over HTTP. Grafana can display those collected values and their trends. See the Prometheus Node Exporter guide and the Node Exporter project documentation.
- CPU:
node_cpu_seconds_totalis a cumulative counter, not a current CPU percentage. Interpret its change over a time window with a rate expression. The Prometheus guide demonstratesrate(node_cpu_seconds_total{mode="system"}[1m]); adapt the mode and expression to the question your panel is meant to answer. - Memory: Track available memory over time, and watch for sustained decline or swap activity if the relevant collectors are enabled. A single reading does not show whether pressure is persistent.
- Supporting context: Filesystem space and network activity can help explain a change. Check metric names and labels on your installed exporter rather than assuming every version exposes an identical set.
- Stream health: Host metrics cannot establish whether YouTube is receiving a healthy stream. Compare resource trends with the stream process’s logs and service status; use a separate stream health check or heartbeat if you need end-to-end continuity monitoring.
There is no source-backed CPU or memory threshold that is universally safe for a YouTube stream. Resource needs depend on the stream software, encoding or relay workload, operating system, and server size. Establish a baseline while the server is behaving normally, then alert on sustained headroom loss, sudden changes, or service failure.
Choose a monitoring setup
| Option | Setup effort | Where metrics live | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hetzner Prometheus/Grafana app image | Lower initial installation effort; activation is still required after boot | On the same cloud server unless configured separately | A single-server operator who wants a packaged stack |
| Install and configure Node Exporter and Prometheus independently | More control over placement and configuration | Prometheus can run on a separate monitoring host | An operator with an existing monitoring stack, multiple servers, or a need for monitoring independent of the stream server |
The app image is described on Hetzner’s Prometheus/Grafana app page, last changed November 6, 2024. Hetzner says Prometheus, Grafana, Node Exporter, and other components are preinstalled, but not activated automatically. A separate monitoring host can keep the scraper and dashboard available during an outage of the stream host, at the cost of extra configuration and network/firewall work; it is not required for a one-server setup.

Set up monitoring on Hetzner Cloud
Option A: Start with Hetzner’s app image
- In the Hetzner Cloud Console, choose the Prometheus/Grafana app image when creating a server, or provision it through the Hetzner API.
- After the server boots, connect over SSH and follow the activation procedure on Hetzner’s app-image page. The software is preinstalled, but it is not automatically activated. Do not expose real credentials in shared documentation or screenshots.
- Confirm that the services are running and that Prometheus has a working Node Exporter target before relying on dashboards or alerts. If the monitoring stack and stream process are on the same machine, remember that a server outage can take both offline.
Option B: Install Node Exporter and configure Prometheus
- On the Linux server that runs the stream, install and run Node Exporter using the instructions for your distribution and the official Prometheus guide. Package commands vary by operating system and release, so use the current instructions for your system rather than copying an older distribution-specific command.
- Verify the exporter locally with
curl http://localhost:9100/metrics. A working response includes metric names prefixed withnode_. This check confirms that the local endpoint responds; it does not yet confirm that a remote Prometheus server can reach it. - Add the exporter as a Prometheus scrape target. The official guide’s simple, same-host example uses
localhost:9100and a 15-second scrape interval. Treat that interval as an example, not a requirement for every stream. - If Prometheus runs on a separate host, configure the target with the stream server’s private address. Allow inbound TCP port 9100 only from the Prometheus host or an appropriately restricted private network.
- Check the target’s health in Prometheus and resolve any connection error before treating its charts as current. A Hetzner Community tutorial describes an older Debian-oriented installation, firewall and target-check flow; it was published on August 11, 2021, so distribution package details may have changed: Hetzner Community’s Prometheus metrics-stack tutorial.
Keep the exporter private
Node Exporter’s HTTP endpoint exposes server metrics. Do not leave TCP 9100 open to the public Internet. Restrict it to the Prometheus host or a private network in both the server’s firewall and any applicable cloud firewall rules. If Prometheus is local, use the local endpoint rather than making the exporter publicly reachable.
Build useful CPU and memory views
CPU over time
Use a rate over a recent window for the cumulative CPU counter rather than graphing its raw total as if it were a current utilization percentage. Prometheus’s example, rate(node_cpu_seconds_total{mode="system"}[1m]), calculates a recent rate for the selected mode. Select and label modes deliberately for the panel you want; that example alone is not a complete CPU-utilization formula.

Memory and swap trends
Graph available memory and, where enabled, swap activity alongside the stream’s operating period. Look for a sustained downward trend or growing swap activity, then investigate the stream process and other workloads. Confirm the actual metric names and labels at /metrics before writing dashboard queries; names can depend on the installed exporter and its collectors.
Put metrics in context
- Mark stream start, restart, and configuration changes on the same timeline as CPU and memory where your dashboard supports it.
- Compare a resource change with the stream process’s logs and service status. A CPU spike alone does not prove that YouTube ingest has failed.
- Include filesystem space and network activity as diagnostic context, not as substitutes for checking the stream itself.
- Node Exporter is intended to report host-system metrics. If you run it in a container without suitable host access, its view may describe the container rather than the complete server. See the Node Exporter documentation for the host-system focus and container caveat.
Set alerts around your own baseline
Useful alert conditions include an unreachable Prometheus target, an unavailable exporter, sustained CPU pressure, low available memory, increasing swap activity, and failure of the stream service. Prometheus and Grafana provide components for monitoring and alerting, but the cited setup documentation does not define validated YouTube-specific thresholds or alert rules.

- Choose thresholds from observations of your actual server and workload, then test that alerts fire and reach the right person.
- Use a duration or trend requirement for conditions that can spike briefly, rather than treating every short peak as an incident.
- Keep a target-down alert distinct from a stream-service alert: the first means Prometheus cannot collect metrics; it does not by itself say why the stream is unavailable.
- Pair host-resource alerts with a stream health check or heartbeat if you need to know whether the broadcast itself is continuing.
How to tell if the server is running out of resources
Look for a change from the server’s normal operating pattern that persists or coincides with service trouble, rather than relying on one universal cutoff. A gradual loss of available memory, new or growing swap activity, or sustained CPU pressure warrants investigation. Check whether the change began with the stream workload, another process, a software change, or increased work on the server. Correlate those findings with service status, logs, and an independent indication of stream continuity before deciding whether to tune the workload or resize the server.
Troubleshoot missing or misleading metrics
curlcannot reachlocalhost:9100: Check whether Node Exporter is installed and running, and confirm its configured listening address and port.- The local endpoint responds, but Prometheus marks the target down: Check the target address and port, routing, and firewall rules. For a separate monitor, permit TCP 9100 from that monitor’s address rather than opening it publicly.
- Prometheus has no recent data: Check target health and the last scrape error before troubleshooting Grafana panels. A dashboard cannot display fresh data that Prometheus has not collected.
- A panel shows a huge or steadily rising CPU value: If it graphs
node_cpu_seconds_totaldirectly, it is showing a cumulative counter. Use a rate expression over a time window and make sure the panel label describes what the query actually measures. - Metrics look too small or unlike the whole server: Check whether Node Exporter is containerized and has access to host metrics. A container-only view may not represent the host.
- Metrics look normal but the stream is down: Resource charts do not prove end-to-end YouTube health. Check the stream process and logs, then verify continuity through an independent stream health check.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep a prerecorded YouTube stream live without maintaining a stream process on your Hetzner server, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops uploaded videos in the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. The same service handles any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. It plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed, and streams to YouTube only. Its first day is free with no card. The monthly option is $9.99 per month.
