Monitor the Linode host with Longview, then check YouTube Live Control Room for the incoming stream’s health. The two views cover different parts of the delivery path: Longview shows host resources and network activity, while YouTube reports what it is receiving. If the stream has trouble, compare its total configured bitrate with measured outbound capacity and investigate the network route.
What to monitor—and where

Longview is useful for spotting changes in host load or network activity over time. Linode staff has also described API statistics for CPU, disk I/O, and IPv4/IPv6 network traffic covering the preceding 24 hours; because those details come from a staff community answer and API fields can change, check current platform documentation before building an integration.
Set up a useful monitoring routine
- Open Longview for the Linode running the encoder. Use its CPU and network graphs to establish what the host is doing during the broadcast; include memory when checking for broader resource pressure. Longview’s client and service limits may change, so confirm current installation instructions and account limits with Linode.
- Open YouTube Live Control Room during the event. Review stream health and status messages as the stream runs. YouTube says those messages can provide specific errors and instructions.
- Compare the encoder’s total bitrate with outbound capacity. Count every feed that uses the connection, including a backup stream if one is active. Test upload capacity rather than relying on download speed, and leave room above the configured bitrate.
- Correlate the observations. If CPU activity changes when stream health worsens, investigate encoder load and other work on the Linode. If the host appears otherwise stable but YouTube reports delivery trouble, examine outbound capacity and the network path. These indicators help narrow the problem; they do not by themselves prove a cause.
How much upload bandwidth does the stream need?
YouTube Help advises that total stream bitrate must not exceed available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% headroom. Apply that margin to the total bitrate sent over the connection, including any backup feed. Check the upload path from the Linode rather than using a download-speed result as a substitute.
There is no single encoder bitrate that fits every stream. YouTube publishes recommended settings by codec, resolution, and frame rate. For example, YouTube’s H.264 settings list 6 Mbps minimum and 17 Mbps recommended for 1080p at 60 fps; the AV1/H.265 row lists 4 Mbps minimum and 12 Mbps recommended for that resolution and frame rate. These are YouTube encoder-setting recommendations, not guaranteed CPU or network requirements for a Linode. Consult YouTube’s table for the actual codec and output settings, then allow the recommended upload headroom.

Diagnose capacity and route problems
Capacity is not the same as throughput
A stated or theoretical bandwidth capacity does not show what the complete route can deliver at the moment. Linode staff distinguishes capacity from observed throughput and recommends testing between endpoints with iPerf. An iPerf result reflects the route and its conditions, so it may differ from a provider’s nominal capacity or another test location.
Use MTR when the route may be involved
If Longview and YouTube point toward a delivery problem but a basic capacity check looks adequate, use bidirectional MTR to investigate connectivity along the route. Linode troubleshooting guidance also recommends checking CPU steal when examining host-side performance. Interpret these alongside the live YouTube status and host graphs; none supplies a workload-independent CPU threshold or a universal plan-size recommendation.

Common symptoms and what to check
- YouTube reports poor stream health, but Longview does not show an obvious host issue: check actual outbound upload throughput, compare it with total configured bitrate, account for a backup feed, and inspect route quality with iPerf and MTR.
- Network activity rises when stream health worsens: verify whether another process or feed is using outbound capacity, then check whether the stream bitrate plus other traffic fits within available upload capacity and headroom.
- CPU activity changes during the broadcast: correlate the change with encoder settings and other work on the Linode. The available guidance does not establish one CPU percentage that is safe for every workload.
- Cloud Manager shows the instance as running, but the stream is unavailable: do not treat lifecycle status as proof that the application responds. Check the livestream process, Longview metrics, and YouTube’s stream-health messages separately.
- A bandwidth test seems inconsistent with the stream: confirm that it tested upload rather than download, used relevant endpoints, and reflected the route and conditions during the broadcast. A single result is not a guarantee of sustained throughput.
When to use a separate monitoring stack
Longview is the simpler starting point for Linode host graphs. Linode staff has also pointed to Prometheus and Grafana as an alternative system-monitoring approach. That option can suit a configurable monitoring setup, but the specific implementation depends on what you need to collect and display. Neither approach replaces YouTube Live Control Room for the platform’s view of ingest health.
