Monitor competitors on Instagram by choosing a small, relevant comparison set, recording public profile and post activity on a regular schedule, and comparing equivalent periods. Public likes, comments, and follower counts can reveal visible patterns; they do not show a competitor’s private reach, saves, link clicks, audience demographics, or sales. A spreadsheet is enough for occasional checks, while reporting tools can help with recurring comparisons if their account eligibility, metrics, history, and plan limits fit your needs.

What to monitor

Keep the log focused on signals you can observe consistently. A dated record makes it easier to separate a lasting pattern from a single post that happened to attract attention.

  • Profile and offer: bio, link destination, pinned content, current offer, launches, and collaborations.
  • Publishing pattern: post date, frequency, and format, such as Reels, carousels, or images.
  • Content choices: recurring subjects, apparent hooks, caption structure, calls to action, and repeated hashtags.
  • Visible response: public likes and comments where displayed, plus recurring questions or themes in comments.
  • Changes over time: shifts in positioning, posting gaps, and changes to products or campaigns.

Hootsuite describes competitor comparisons that include post performance, posting frequency, post type, and hashtags. Its Instagram estimated-engagement measure is based on likes and comments, not private account Insights (Hootsuite’s competitor-analysis documentation).

Set up a repeatable monitoring routine

1. Choose accounts that make a fair comparison

Start with direct competitors that offer similar products or serve a similar audience. You can add a few aspirational accounts if their positioning or content approach is relevant to your goals. Keep the set small enough that you can review it regularly. The right comparison is about relevance, not collecting the largest possible list.

2. Record a dated baseline

For each account, note its handle, the date checked, visible follower count, bio, offer, link destination, and pinned content. Add a short explanation of why the account belongs in the comparison set. Follower totals are snapshots, not proof of momentum; you need repeated observations to see change.

3. Review posts on a consistent cadence

Choose an interval you can maintain, such as a weekly or monthly review, and use the same date range for every account. For each post in that period, record the date, format, subject, apparent hook, caption structure, call to action, visible likes and comments, and any repeated hashtags. Be consistent about what you count: comparing a full month for one account with a few recent posts for another can distort the picture.

4. Look for patterns, then form your own tests

Note which subjects, formats, and calls to action recur alongside visible responses. Treat those observations as ideas to test, not proof that a tactic caused success. Create an original variation suited to your audience rather than copying a competitor’s creative. To judge your own test, use analytics for your own account.

5. Track profile changes and visible audience questions

Log changes to offers, bios, links, launches, collaborations, and publishing gaps. Comments can surface questions or objections worth addressing in your own content, but they are a public sample—not a representative customer survey.

6. Turn each useful observation into a test

For each pattern worth exploring, write down a hypothesis, the original content variation you will publish, and the metric on your own account that will help evaluate it. This keeps competitor monitoring tied to decisions instead of becoming a collection of screenshots or counts.

7. Revisit the comparison set

Remove accounts that no longer represent a meaningful comparison and add relevant new ones. If a reporting tool offers only limited historical backfill, start tracking before the period you want to analyze.

What public Instagram data can—and cannot—tell you

Public competitor reports are not equivalent to private Insights. Sprout Social describes its Instagram Competitors Report as using publicly available data, while distinguishing it from reporting on connected Business Profiles that can use private data (Sprout Social’s report documentation). Public activity can help you compare visible interaction, but it cannot establish a competitor’s reach, saves, link clicks, audience composition, or sales.

Nor does a high like or comment count prove why a post performed well. Timing, audience size, content distribution, and other factors may affect what you can see. Use competitor signals to generate hypotheses; use your own account’s analytics to assess your results. Do not treat a universal engagement-rate target as established by these sources.

Eligibility and data availability also vary. Hootsuite says its Instagram analytics collection requires an Instagram Business profile connected to a Facebook Page (Hootsuite’s Instagram Business metrics documentation). That requirement concerns its analytics collection; check the separate competitor-report requirements before choosing a workflow.

How to choose

  • Account eligibility: confirm that the account type you want to monitor is supported.
  • Available competitor metrics: check exactly which public measures and content details are included.
  • Number of accounts and groups: compare the tool’s limits with the watchlist you actually need.
  • History and backfill: find out what data is available before you add an account and whether earlier follower data can be recovered.
  • Reporting and export: determine whether the report views fit your workflow and whether you need to share or export results.
  • Plan and cost: verify which subscription tier includes the feature and its current price; the cited documentation does not establish comparable current pricing.

Is there a native Instagram competitor benchmarking feature?

The available evidence here does not establish whether Instagram currently offers a native “Competitive Insights” feature, which accounts would qualify, or how it would work. Do not rely on unverified descriptions of a native competitor dashboard; check current official Instagram or Meta documentation before building your process around one.

Or skip the browser setup

If you want screenshots of public competitor pages for your own review or records, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. A single request can return an image or PDF; its clean-shot steps accept cookie or consent banners like a visitor and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets, and each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed; responses identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server gives AI agents tools to take screenshots, get page information, and capture PDFs. It does not provide private Instagram analytics or replace a repeatable comparison log.
