You can keep a careful, timestamped record of Etsy listing prices by observing listings in an ordinary browser session and saving screenshots. That is different from running an automated monitor: Etsy’s API Terms prohibit automated systems and browser extensions from accessing, analyzing, or scraping Etsy data unless Etsy expressly authorizes the use. Etsy’s developer documentation also says screen-scraping is not allowed for applications seeking commercial API access. A screenshot tool does not itself establish permission to automate access.
What Etsy’s rules mean for price monitoring
Etsy’s API Terms prohibit automated systems and browser extensions from accessing, analyzing, or scraping Etsy listings, shops, profiles, the API, or other Etsy data unless Etsy expressly authorizes it. Etsy’s developer documentation says applications seeking commercial API access must comply with the API terms and that “Screen-scraping is not allowed.” See Etsy’s API Terms and Etsy’s developer documentation.
Do not assume that a scheduled screenshot, browser extension, bot, or third-party service is permitted simply because it captures a visible page rather than extracting page source. The reviewed official material does not specifically address ordinary manual screenshot record-keeping, either. A manual record of what you see while browsing normally is a practical approach, not a workflow Etsy has expressly approved in the cited material.

- Manual observation: Visit the listing yourself, note its displayed details, and save a screenshot during ordinary browsing. Do not treat this as a blanket statement of Etsy approval.
- Automated monitoring: Do not set up recurring page captures, scraping, or browser-extension collection of Etsy data unless Etsy has expressly authorized that use.
- API use: An API endpoint or price field is not blanket permission to build a competitor-monitoring product. Confirm the access approval and applicable terms for your specific use.
How to create a useful manual price record
- Open the listing in a normal browser session. Record the full listing URL and the date and time of observation, including the timezone.
- Choose and record the relevant variation. If a listing offers sizes, colors, bundles, or other options, note the selected option. Prices may differ by variation.
- Write down the displayed item price and currency. Keep shipping separate rather than combining it with the item price. Note visible sale or discount context.
- Capture the relevant page area. Include enough of the listing to identify the item, selected variation, displayed price, and any visible sale or shipping information. Save the screenshot with a filename that connects it to the listing and observation time.
- Log changes and uncertainty. Note if the listing or selected variation changed, if shipping was not visible, or if a displayed price could not be confirmed.
A practical record can use these fields:
- Competitor shop or listing URL
- Capture date and time with timezone
- Product variation selected
- Displayed item price and currency
- Shipping shown separately
- Visible sale or discount context
- Screenshot filename
- Note if the listing or selected variation changed
Make screenshots comparable without automating Etsy access
For a useful comparison, keep your observation fields consistent and compare like with like: the same variation, the same currency, and shipping treated consistently. A screenshot establishes what was visible at the time you observed the page; it does not show when a price changed between observations. Label any later report with its observation time rather than presenting a saved screenshot as a live price.

Store only the information needed for your comparison. If you use Etsy API data under an approved application, Etsy’s terms require listing content displayed via the API to be no more than six hours older than the corresponding Etsy listing, and other Etsy content to be no more than 24 hours older. Can Etsy’s API show listing prices?
Yes. Etsy’s official listing tutorial identifies a price field. That confirms an API capability; it does not by itself authorize marketplace-wide competitor monitoring. Etsy says marketplace-wide listing management depends on application access level, and commercial access requests are reviewed. Check the current access approval and terms for the proposed use before building an application. Etsy requires an API key on v3 requests; OAuth is additionally required for endpoints that access private member data or perform write operations. For API applications, Etsy sets per-application queries-per-day (QPD) and queries-per-second (QPS) limits. QPD is calculated over a rolling 24-hour period. Successful-response headers expose current limits and remaining allowance; the example values on the Rate Limits page are not guaranteed allocations for every application. A limit violation returns HTTP 429 with a retry-after header. Etsy recommends caching and robust retry handling. Troubleshooting your manual records
- The screenshot shows the wrong price: Check which variation was selected and note it in the record; the displayed price may depend on the option.
- The total differs from the item price: Record shipping separately and retain the currency shown. Do not compare an item-only price with another listing’s item-plus-shipping total.
- You cannot tell when a change happened: A screenshot captures one observation, not a continuous history. Use the recorded timestamp and make another manual observation when appropriate; do not infer an exact change time.
- An API request receives HTTP 429: This is a rate-limit response. Follow the response’s
retry-afterheader, review the application’s current limits in Etsy’s Developer Portal, and implement caching and robust retry handling as Etsy recommends. - You are unsure whether a proposed monitor is allowed: The cited rules do not establish authorization for a particular third-party tool or automated screenshot workflow. Check Etsy’s applicable terms and obtain express authorization before automating access.
