To monitor terms and conditions reliably, save the exact terms URL and a dated copy of the current text, then use a page-change monitor or public archive to capture later versions. When an alert arrives, compare the full passages, confirm the document and audience match, and record both the capture date and any effective date stated by the provider. An alert shows a change in captured public text; it does not determine which contract applies to you or whether a clause is enforceable.
1. Identify the exact terms you need to watch
Start with the canonical terms page for the service and relationship that matter to you. Record the service name, policy title, exact URL, audience, and jurisdiction if the page specifies one. A company may publish separate terms for different products, customers, or regions, so do not assume a general terms page covers every account or service.
List related documents that could affect the same relationship, such as privacy, acceptable-use, service-specific, or data-processing terms. Monitor those separately when relevant; a change to one document may matter even when the main terms page is unchanged.
2. Create a dated baseline before monitoring
Save the version you can see now before relying on future alerts. Keep a copy, export, or archive capture that preserves the document text and enough context to identify the service and policy. Record the source URL and the date you retrieved it. Without an identifiable earlier version, a later comparison cannot reliably establish what text changed.

Keep the provider’s stated effective date separate from your retrieval date. The first is the date the provider says a version takes effect; the second is when you or a monitor captured it. They may differ, and a monitor’s capture date does not establish when you accepted a version.
3. Choose a monitoring approach

No option guarantees complete coverage: a monitor may miss a change between checks, fail to retrieve a protected page, capture the wrong jurisdiction, or report extraction noise. Public collections cover their selected documents, not necessarily every service or version. Check coverage and retention details before making a tool part of a business process.

4. Configure checks to reduce noise
Target the legal text
Where the tool allows it, select the document body or relevant content block instead of the whole page. Navigation, cookie banners, layout adjustments, and other page elements can create alerts that do not reflect a terms change. SiteMonit documents selecting legal text and word-level diffs; extraction differences can still require human review.
Choose a schedule and destination
Set the interval according to how quickly a change would matter, how many pages you watch, and the monitor’s limits. SiteMonit describes hourly or daily checks as typical for its legal-page use case, but there is no universally correct interval established here. Send alerts to an inbox or shared channel that someone is responsible for reviewing.
Check failed fetches
An inaccessible or blocked page is not an unchanged page. Review error or blocked-check reports and, when needed, capture the public page manually or consult another public source. SiteMonit says it reports blocked checks in its results.

5. Validate each important alert
- Open the earlier and later captured versions, not just the alert summary.
- Confirm that both captures refer to the same service, policy, audience, and jurisdiction.
- Record each retrieval date and any effective date stated by the provider as separate facts.
- Read the changed passage in context, including nearby clauses, defined terms, and linked documents it references.
- Retain the source URL, copies or archive references, and the diff or evidence packet with your notes.
Automated summaries can misclassify layout or extraction changes. A comparison identifies differences in captured text; it does not interpret their legal effect.
6. Preserve evidence and escalate consequential changes
If an edit may affect payment, cancellation, data use, dispute procedures, or your obligations, preserve the versions and comparison. For advice about what applies to your account or what a clause means, consult a qualified adviser for the relevant jurisdiction. A public archive records captured public text; by itself it does not establish what an individual accepted, which terms govern a private account, or whether a clause is valid.
