To monitor backlinks, set alerts in an SEO platform for the domain or URL you care about, choose whether to track new links, lost links, or both, and review each alert against the linking page and destination. Use Google Search Console’s Links report as a supplementary view of links Google has found—not as a complete inventory or change-alert system.

What backlink alerts tell you

A backlink alert reports that a tool’s index detected a link appearing or disappearing. New-link alerts help you spot recent mentions and competitor link-building activity. Lost-link alerts can surface links worth checking for possible recovery. Neither alert alone explains why a link changed or whether the change matters; inspect the page and target before deciding what to do.

How to set up backlink alerts

  1. Choose what you need to monitor. Decide whether you want new links to your site, lost links, a competitor’s links, or changes to one important landing page.
  2. Choose the scope. Ahrefs documents alert targeting for a domain, subdomain, subfolder, or individual URL. A domain-level alert gives a broad view; a URL-level alert focuses on links to a particular page. See Ahrefs’ instructions for backlink alerts.
  3. Select the alert type and delivery settings. Choose new backlinks, lost backlinks, or both, then set the available email frequency in the account. Options can depend on the product and subscription, so confirm what your current account offers.
  4. Review each notification. Open the linking page, check whether the link is present, and confirm its destination. For a lost link, check whether the page still exists and whether the link moved or changed.
  5. Keep a record of consequential changes. Note the linking page, target URL, date you received the alert, and any follow-up. This helps distinguish a meaningful lost placement from a change that needs no action.

How to monitor your site and competitors

Track your own new and lost links

Use a domain or subdomain scope for a broad profile, and add URL-level monitoring for pages where links are especially important. When a loss is reported, check the source page and target URL before contacting the site owner. A report is a lead to investigate, not proof of the reason for the loss.

Watch a competitor’s page

Set an alert for a competitor’s domain or a specific competing URL, depending on whether you want general activity or links to one page. New-link notifications can suggest sites and pages that may be relevant to your own outreach. Evaluate the context and audience of each linking page rather than assuming every newly discovered link is useful.

How quickly do backlink alerts update?

Published refresh figures describe a vendor’s data processing, not a guarantee that every changed link will be found immediately. Ahrefs says its fresh backlink index updates every 15–30 minutes, while a complete update covering backlinks across the Internet takes about two months. The difference matters: frequent updates to newly discovered data do not mean every page is recrawled at that interval. Details are in Ahrefs’ database update explanation.

Semrush says its Backlinks database updates hourly, its interface updates every 15 minutes, and it takes around 40 minutes on average to report a recently appeared link. These are Semrush’s stated figures, not an independent comparison or a promise for a particular backlink. See Semrush’s update information.

How the main monitoring options differ

Option What it can show Scope and timing Important limitation
Ahrefs alerts Alerts for new or lost backlinks Domain, subdomain, subfolder, or URL; fresh index updates every 15–30 minutes, with a complete database update taking about two months, according to Ahrefs Those index intervals do not guarantee immediate discovery of every change; alert frequency options can vary by feature and subscription
Semrush Backlinks New and lost link monitoring, including competitor monitoring Semrush reports hourly database updates, interface updates every 15 minutes, and an average of around 40 minutes to report a recently appeared link These are vendor-reported cadence figures, not a guarantee for an individual link or an independent benchmark
Google Search Console Links report A sample of links Google has found for a verified site Available in Search Console; the documented report is for viewing links, not alerts when they change Not exhaustive; tables are limited to 1,000 rows, pages are grouped by canonical URL, and duplicate links are combined

For Google’s qualifications, see the Search Console Links report documentation. Google explicitly says, “This report isn’t a comprehensive list of every link.” Use it as another view of your site’s links, not as a full backlink ledger or substitute for change alerts.

How to choose an alert setup

  • For your whole site: begin with domain scope and alerts for both new and lost links if both changes matter.
  • For a priority landing page: add a URL-level alert so changes to that destination are easier to isolate.
  • For competitor research: monitor the competitor domain for broad activity or a specific URL for page-level link discovery.
  • For a second perspective: consult Search Console’s Links report for links Google reports for your verified site, keeping its sampling and table limits in mind.
  • For any platform: check alert delivery options and account access in the live product before relying on a particular schedule.

Common problems and what to check

An alert has not arrived

Confirm that the monitored scope is correct, the desired alert type is enabled, and the account’s current delivery settings include the frequency you expect. A tool cannot report a change it has not yet discovered, so lack of a notification does not prove no link changed.

A reported lost link still appears on the page

Open the source page and verify the exact target URL. The report may reflect a change in the tool’s index rather than the page’s current state. Check whether the link now points to a different URL or whether the page content changed.

A backlink is missing from Search Console

The Links report is sampled and can omit URLs. It also groups pages by canonical URL, combines duplicate links, and limits tables to 1,000 rows. Absence from the report is not proof that no backlink exists.

A new-link notification arrives later than expected

Discovery depends on the platform finding and processing the linking page. Treat published refresh intervals as descriptions of vendor systems, not real-time coverage guarantees.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server, not a backlink-monitoring platform. It can help capture a linking page when you are reviewing an alert: consent banners are accepted and removed along with known newsletter popups and chat widgets before the shot, and bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed. AI agents can use its MCP tools to take screenshots, get page information, or capture PDFs. The free plan includes 1,000 shots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

One GET request returns a screenshot. Replace the sample URL with the linking page you want to inspect. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

ScreenshotNeo is useful for capturing pages during backlink review; it does not monitor backlinks or send backlink-change alerts. Sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month with no card.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Google Search Console email me when a backlink changes?

Does a lost-link alert mean the site owner removed my link?

No. It means the tool detected a loss in its index. Check the linking page and destination to establish what changed.
