Monitor an AWS media workflow with more than one signal: start with AWS Elemental Workflow monitor for a supported-resource signal map, then use service metrics, alerts, events, logs, and CloudTrail to investigate the failure you are trying to detect. The map helps show connected resources; it is not a guarantee that every component or failure mode is covered.
Choose monitoring by the failure you need to detect
A media workflow can fail in different ways: a resource can stop, a media flow can degrade, playback requests can fail or return stale manifests, or a configuration change can disrupt delivery. These signals live in different AWS facilities, so one dashboard or alarm is rarely enough to explain every incident.

| Operational question | Useful signal | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Is a resource running or in an alert state? | Service state and service alerts | Whether the service reports a state change or a condition it has detected. |
| Is media flowing, and is its quality or health changing? | CloudWatch metrics and service-specific source or flow health | Time-series trends and threshold conditions; metric names and dimensions depend on the service and, for MediaPackage, its generation. |
| Are playback requests succeeding, or are clients receiving stale manifests? | MediaPackage metrics, access logs, and manifest update headers | Request behavior and evidence that can help diagnose stale manifests. AWS notes the manifest-header method for workflows without dynamic ad insertion. |
| What happened operationally, or who changed configuration? | Service logs, events, and CloudTrail | Detailed activity, resource-change events, and API-call accountability. CloudTrail is especially useful for identifying API activity associated with a change. |
Metrics are time-series data for trends and alarms; alerts describe service-detected conditions; events can initiate actions; logs preserve operational detail; and CloudTrail records API activity. Treat them as complementary evidence, not interchangeable versions of the same monitor.

AWS Elemental Workflow monitor is available through the AWS console and API. It can discover supported interconnected resources into signal maps and apply reusable CloudWatch alarm and EventBridge rule templates. AWS documents discovery for MediaConnect, MediaLive, MediaPackage, MediaTailor, Amazon S3, and CloudFront. Do not assume that an unlisted service, custom integration, or every resource in your workflow will appear automatically.

1. Inventory the real workflow
List the MediaConnect flows, MediaLive channels or multiplexes, MediaPackage channels or channel groups and origin endpoints, and any relevant MediaTailor, S3, or CloudFront resources. Record the expected production path and the purpose of each component before relying on a generated map.
2. Discover and validate the signal map
Begin discovery from a supported resource using Workflow monitor, then review the resulting signal map. Compare its connections with your inventory and actual production path. Treat the map as a topology aid: validate that expected links and resources are present, and identify gaps that need service-specific monitoring.
3. Import an alarm template group, then review it
AWS provides recommended alarm template groups for different services and workflow types. They contain curated metrics and predefined settings; imported templates can be customized. Select a group that fits the workflow, then inspect every metric, statistic, comparison operator, threshold, and evaluation period against your own operational objective. A recommended template is a starting point, not evidence that its settings meet your service-level objective.
Add custom templates for important failure signals the selected group does not cover. Do not apply one universal threshold across different services or workflows: the relevant metric, normal operating range, and acceptable detection delay depend on the system you operate.

4. Configure event handling and repeatable deployment
Set up EventBridge rules and the corresponding notification or response actions for the alarm events you need to route. Workflow monitor can convert its templates into CloudFormation templates, which can help make deployment repeatable. Review the resources created by that deployment and their ongoing costs before applying it to production.
5. Exercise the alert path
In your own environment, perform a controlled, authorized operational exercise to confirm that the intended condition produces the expected signal and reaches the right responder or action. Validate the threshold and the full route, not just whether an alarm object exists.
Use service-specific evidence to investigate incidents
MediaLive: separate state, alerts, metrics, logs, and API activity
MediaLive monitoring has distinct views for channel and multiplex state, alerts, CloudWatch metrics, channel and multiplex logs, schedule logs, and API-call logs. AWS also documents monitoring through the console, SDK/API, CloudWatch Events, CloudWatch metrics, CloudWatch Logs, and CloudTrail. Check the signal that matches the symptom: state and alerts for service conditions, metrics for changes over time, schedule logs for scheduling activity, and API records when investigating actions that affected the channel or multiplex.

MediaPackage: distinguish metrics from request and manifest evidence
MediaPackage offers CloudWatch metrics and alarms, along with access logs and manifest update headers. Use metrics to watch trends and thresholds; use access logs to investigate request behavior. Manifest update headers can help diagnose stale manifests in workflows without dynamic ad insertion. CloudWatch Events and CloudTrail provide additional operational and audit views.
Confirm whether the workflow uses MediaPackage v1 or v2 before choosing metric names, dimensions, or dashboards. For MediaPackage v2, AWS documents metrics as published every minute, if not sooner, and metric retention of 15 months. Do not apply v2 names or dimensions to an earlier MediaPackage generation.
MediaConnect: match the dashboard period to the metric
Use MediaConnect flow metrics and source-health signals to investigate media-flow conditions. AWS documents 15 months of metric retention. Most MediaConnect metrics can be viewed at periods as short as one second, but Gateway metrics require a period of at least one minute. A one-second dashboard period is therefore not valid for Gateway metrics.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteSet thresholds and dashboard granularity for your workflow
Alarm thresholds and evaluation periods should reflect the workflow’s normal behavior, operational target, and the delay at which a response is still useful. A preset can accelerate setup, but it does not establish the right threshold for your service-level objective. Check current AWS service guidance for the particular metric and resource, then validate the alarm with an authorized exercise.

For MediaConnect, choose a dashboard period compatible with the metric: most metrics support one-second periods, while Gateway metrics need at least one minute. For MediaPackage v2, AWS says metrics are published every minute, if not sooner; that publication cadence is not a reason to assume other MediaPackage generations or services share the same cadence.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Plan for deployment and ongoing costs
AWS states that Workflow monitor itself has no direct charge, but resources it creates or uses can incur costs. These may include CloudWatch and EventBridge resources, S3 storage or retrieval associated with deployment templates, and MediaPackage preview data transfer. Review the current AWS Workflow monitor documentation and the applicable service pricing for your region and configuration before deployment; actual charges depend on resources and usage.
Troubleshoot common monitoring gaps
- A resource is missing from the signal map: Check whether it is among Workflow monitor’s documented discovery services, verify it is connected as expected, and compare the map with your inventory. Add service-specific monitoring for components that are not mapped.
- An alarm fires but does not explain the incident: Use the metric as a detection signal, then inspect the relevant service alert, logs, request records, or CloudTrail activity. An alarm is not a substitute for operational detail.
- A preset alarm is noisy or misses an important condition: Recheck its metric, statistic, operator, threshold, and evaluation period against the workflow’s normal range and response objective. Customize the imported template or add a custom one.
- A MediaConnect Gateway metric cannot use a one-second period: Set the dashboard period to at least one minute; AWS documents that minimum for Gateway metrics.
- A MediaPackage manifest appears stale: For a workflow without dynamic ad insertion, inspect manifest update headers alongside access logs and metrics. Confirm the MediaPackage generation before interpreting metric names or dimensions.
- You cannot determine who made a configuration change: Inspect CloudTrail API activity, then correlate it with service logs, events, and the time of the observed state or metric change.
- An alert does not reach the intended responder: Verify the EventBridge rule, target or notification action, and routing permissions, then repeat a controlled test through the complete alert path.
