Monitor a 24/7 YouTube broadcast at three points: the upstream encoder or AWS Elemental MediaLive, AWS Elemental MediaPackage in CloudWatch, and the audience-facing stream in YouTube Live Control Room. These checks answer different questions: is video being produced, is MediaPackage receiving and delivering it, and is YouTube reporting a healthy stream? Use alarms and a staffed response path alongside those checks; no single metric proves the whole broadcast is healthy.
Map the monitoring path before setting alarms
Write down the actual route from encoder to viewer—for example, encoder or MediaLive → MediaPackage → YouTube—and identify which service owns each handoff. MediaLive is only present in some workflows; if you use a different encoder, monitor that encoder with its own tools rather than looking for a MediaLive channel.
Use the same time window when comparing dashboards. AWS metrics, encoder health checks, and YouTube’s stream-health assessment are separate signals and may not update at the same instant. Check the upstream encoder or MediaLive first
If MediaLive is the encoder
Open the channel in the AWS Elemental MediaLive console and inspect its state, Health tab, pipeline details, active alerts, alert clear times, and destination information. A channel may have one or two pipelines depending on its configuration. If MediaPackage input activity falls or input quality changes, this upstream view can help determine whether the fault began before the content reached MediaPackage. See AWS MediaLive monitoring.

If you use another encoder
Check the encoder’s own output state, network path, and logs. Do not interpret the absence of a MediaLive channel as a MediaPackage fault. For YouTube encoder workflows, YouTube recommends testing before going live, checking the Live Control Room preview, monitoring audio and video during the event, and testing backup-encoder failover where configured. Monitor MediaPackage in CloudWatch
Scope metrics to the stream
In CloudWatch, open the AWS/MediaPackage namespace and select dimensions that isolate the relevant channel and endpoint. AWS documents dimensions that include channel, ingest endpoint, origin endpoint, request type, status code, and track type. Available metrics and dimensions vary by MediaPackage version, so verify the names for the deployed version before building alarms. Watch input, delivery, and quality signals
- Input: Is input activity continuing? Do supported input quality metrics change?
- Output: Are output requests and bytes continuing for the relevant origin endpoint?
- Responses: Are request response times changing, or are 4xx or 5xx responses increasing?
- Quality: Where supported by your MediaPackage version and workflow, are input or output quality scores changing?
Read these signals together. Continuing input activity does not by itself prove that requests to an origin endpoint succeed, and normal origin metrics do not prove YouTube is receiving or presenting a healthy stream.
Understand metric cadence and retention
AWS documents MediaPackage live metric publishing at every minute or sooner. That cadence is not an instantaneous detection guarantee. AWS also states that CloudWatch retains the referenced statistics for 15 months; this is a retention statement for those CloudWatch statistics, not for YouTube analytics. Verify the destination in YouTube Live Control Room
Check stream health and status messages in Live Control Room, then compare them with the AWS and encoder views for the same period. YouTube displays stream errors beside the Health Indicator with timestamps; its guidance describes red errors as critical and yellow errors as moderate. YouTube live streaming errors
Real-time stream analytics may include concurrent viewers, duration, likes, chat rate, views, and average view duration, depending on the stream type and interface. These describe audience activity; they are not substitutes for MediaPackage input, response, or delivery metrics. YouTube live stream metrics

YouTube’s encoder guidance also says to monitor stream health and review messages during the event. Confirm access to the event through the channel or watch page and on a mobile device when investigating a viewer-access problem. YouTube encoder settings

Create CloudWatch alarms for metrics that represent failure or degradation for this particular stream, then route notifications into an incident process someone is responsible for handling. CloudWatch alarms are threshold-based and can notify or trigger actions. There is no universal threshold or staffing schedule established for every 24/7 broadcast: choose evaluation periods and thresholds from the stream’s service objectives and observed normal behavior.

MediaPackage events can provide additional event-driven context. AWS says these events are emitted on a best-effort basis, so use them to supplement metric-based alarms, not as the only way to detect a failure. Access logs can help investigate requests; manifest update response headers may help diagnose stale manifests in workflows where that feature applies. Triage a live incident in signal order
- YouTube reports unhealthy input: Check the encoder first. If the workflow uses MediaLive, inspect channel and pipeline health and active alerts. Then confirm MediaPackage input activity and applicable quality metrics.
- Input looks healthy, but output requests fail or slow: Inspect MediaPackage origin-endpoint metrics, request dimensions, status codes, response times, and available access logs.
- MediaPackage output appears normal, but YouTube reports errors or viewers cannot access the event: Review YouTube’s timestamped status messages and investigate the destination handoff. Test access through the channel or watch page and a mobile device.
- Dashboards disagree: Preserve timestamps, compare the same interval and endpoint, and account for differing metric cadence and health checks before deciding where the fault lies.
- The stream needs action outside staffed hours: Follow the escalation runbook and response coverage defined for the broadcast’s service objectives; monitoring without an attended response path does not resolve an incident.
