Use CloudWatch to watch whether MediaLive is producing output, and YouTube Live Control Room to check whether YouTube is receiving and processing it. These are complementary checks: neither proves that every viewer can play the stream. For a practical setup, baseline the relevant MediaLive metrics, alarm on meaningful output or processing failures, then correlate AWS timelines with YouTube’s stream-health messages during the event.

What each monitoring view tells you

View What it observes What it can miss
Amazon CloudWatch metrics and alarms MediaLive service activity, including whether outputs are being written and whether frames are dropped. Metrics are near real time and retained for 15 months, according to AWS’s MediaLive CloudWatch metrics documentation. AWS-side output activity alone does not establish that YouTube has ingested the stream successfully.
YouTube Live Control Room YouTube’s view of stream health, status messages, and real-time analytics as it receives and processes the stream. See YouTube’s live stream metrics guidance. A healthy ingest view does not guarantee that every viewer’s device, connection, or playback path is working.

Use both views when investigating an interruption. AWS describes MediaLive activity; YouTube reports destination-side ingest and processing. Their timestamps help narrow down where a fault occurred, but neither is an end-to-end viewer playback guarantee.

Find the right MediaLive metrics in CloudWatch

Start with the metrics for the channel that sends the YouTube output. Identify the relevant output group and pipeline dimensions; a channel may have more than one output or pipeline, so a channel-wide view can hide which path is affected. Verify names, dimensions, and availability against the live channel and current AWS console or API, since configuration determines which metrics apply. AWS documents the output metrics in Output metrics – MediaLive.

ActiveOutputs: the clearest output-activity signal

ActiveOutputs is the most direct documented signal for whether MediaLive is actively writing outputs. AWS says a value of 0 means none of the outputs are being successfully written to their destinations. For detecting whether any expected output is absent during a period, AWS recommends using the Minimum statistic.

Before alerting on zero, account for channel startup, scheduled pauses, and configuration that pauses output on input loss. In those cases, zero can be intentional. Also distinguish a value of zero from missing datapoints: no datapoint is not automatically a zero, and absent data can have metric-specific meanings, such as a channel not running or not generating output audio.

Dropped frames: watch processing behavior

AWS says zero dropped frames is expected and indicates MediaLive is processing incoming frames in real time. Graph the dropped-frame metrics over time and examine the relevant pipeline dimensions. A change from the channel’s normal pattern can help identify processing trouble; select the statistic and alert conditions according to how much interruption your operation can tolerate rather than treating an undocumented value as a universal threshold.

NetworkOut and Output4xxErrors: useful context, not a YouTube health verdict

NetworkOut counts traffic sent from MediaLive, but that traffic includes media output as well as other traffic, such as HTTP GET requests for pull inputs, NTP, and DNS. It is useful context, not proof that YouTube is receiving a healthy stream.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Output4xxErrors is documented for HTTP delivery. It may not be the appropriate indicator for an RTMP or RTMPS destination, so do not assume it covers YouTube ingest errors for those protocols.

Build CloudWatch alarms around real failure conditions

There is no universal AWS-published alarm threshold for every MediaLive-to-YouTube channel. Set conditions from the channel’s expected behavior, startup and pause patterns, and the time your operators can tolerate before being notified. A CloudWatch alarm’s behavior depends on the metric, statistic, comparison operator, threshold, period, and number of datapoints evaluated; AWS explains these controls in its workflow monitor alarm templates documentation.

  1. Establish a baseline. In CloudWatch, view the relevant channel metrics broken out by output group and pipeline. Observe normal startup, steady-state output, and any planned pauses before selecting alarm conditions.
  2. Alarm on missing expected output. For an output expected to be live, use ActiveOutputs and the Minimum statistic to detect a period with no active outputs. Choose the period and evaluation datapoints to fit your response window, and exclude intentional pauses where appropriate.
  3. Monitor processing separately. Add an alert for dropped-frame behavior that departs from the channel’s normal operation. Choose the comparison and evaluation window based on operational needs; the AWS sources do not prescribe a single threshold for all channels.
  4. Review the alarm timeline. When an alarm fires, compare its metric and dimensions with the channel’s status, input behavior, output group, and pipeline. Treat network traffic as supporting context rather than destination confirmation.

AWS also supports reusable alarm template groups and templates through its workflow monitor. A template specifies the target resource type and metric, statistic, comparison operator, threshold, period, and datapoints. Configure and validate these settings against the resources you actually monitor.

Add channel events as a separate notification path

MediaLive can emit channel alerts as CloudWatch events, which an event rule can route to destinations such as Amazon SNS. AWS describes event emission as best effort, so use event notifications alongside metric alarms for the failure modes those metrics cover—not as a replacement for them. See AWS guidance on monitoring a channel or multiplex using CloudWatch Events.

Check whether YouTube is receiving the stream

  1. Open YouTube Live Control Room during the event. Watch the stream-health indicator, status messages, and real-time analytics. YouTube’s live streaming error messages page explains that status errors are timestamped, classified by severity, and accompanied by specific instructions.
  2. Use the error text as the diagnostic lead. Follow the instruction for the reported error instead of inferring ingest health from AWS traffic metrics. Record the message timestamp and severity.
  3. Correlate both timelines. Compare the YouTube message time with CloudWatch alarm state changes and metric graphs, using the same event window and relevant pipeline or output group.
  4. Test before the event. YouTube recommends testing in advance and monitoring stream health while live. Its encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions guidance covers supported settings and bitrate ranges by resolution, frame rate, codec, and protocol.

For RTMP-based streaming, YouTube recommends RTMPS and a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. Treat its current encoder guidance and the settings shown for the event as ingest configuration references; they do not replace monitoring the actual YouTube health messages.

Troubleshoot common monitoring signals

  • ActiveOutputs is zero while the stream should be live: Check whether the channel is still starting, whether output is intentionally paused on input loss, and whether you selected the correct output group and pipeline. If none explains the value, compare the metric time with channel and YouTube status.
  • No datapoints appear: Do not convert the gap into a zero reading. Check whether the channel is running and whether the specific metric is expected to be generated in that state; AWS documents metric-specific absent-data meanings.
  • NetworkOut is nonzero but YouTube reports an ingest problem: NetworkOut includes non-media traffic, so nonzero traffic does not settle the question. Use YouTube’s timestamped message and MediaLive’s output metrics together.
  • Output4xxErrors stays quiet for an RTMP/RTMPS stream: That metric is documented for HTTP delivery and may not report the failure you are investigating. Check the destination’s stream-health view and appropriate MediaLive output signals.
  • An alarm fires during a planned pause: Review the pause schedule and input-loss behavior, then adjust the alarm’s conditions or routing so an intentional zero does not page operators unnecessarily.
  • YouTube reports a format or bitrate issue: Follow the specific Live Control Room instruction and verify the current encoder settings for the selected resolution, frame rate, codec, and protocol against YouTube’s guidance.
