Use three separate checks: OBS’s audio mixer to watch signal and peaks, a test recording and listening check to judge how the stream actually sounds, and YouTube’s stream health to catch ingest problems. If you need an alert while nobody is watching, a third-party OBS silence-detection plugin can help—but test the threshold and notification path before relying on it. None of these checks alone proves that an unattended stream will always sound right.
What each monitoring method can—and cannot—tell you

Keep these checks distinct. A healthy YouTube ingest does not certify the mix, and a moving OBS meter does not prove that YouTube is receiving the audio correctly. YouTube advises creators to “monitor the stream health and review messages” during an event (YouTube Help: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions).
Check the complete audio path before leaving the stream unattended
- Play representative content. Use the same kind of relaxation audio you plan to stream, including its quietest sections and transitions.
- Confirm the source in OBS. Check that the expected source appears in the Audio Mixer and that its meter responds. If the content is stereo, verify that both channels are present.
- Listen through the chain. Listen at the source where possible, then use OBS Audio Monitoring to hear what OBS is receiving. The OBS Project’s Audio Mixer Guide recommends checking the signal at the device and again in OBS.
- Make a representative recording. Record a session like the planned stream, then listen back to the quiet passages, transitions, and louder moments. YouTube likewise recommends pretesting with audio and movement similar to the event.
- Check the output you intend to deliver. Listen for clipping, unexpected silence, channel imbalance, and distracting noise. A meter cannot tell you whether a sound is comfortable or appropriate for a relaxation stream.
Read OBS meters without treating them as a loudness target
The OBS mixer’s moving colored bars show peak level; its peak indicator holds the loudest reading for 20 seconds. OBS describes green as a typical region for background music and effects, yellow as a region for stronger sources, and red as near clipping. Treat these colors as visual guidance in OBS—not as a universal target or proof of perceived loudness. The OBS Audio Mixer Guide explains the meter and monitoring controls.
Digital audio has a ceiling: 0 dBFS is full scale, and audio exceeding it in the delivered stream can clip. OBS’s Audio Mixer Technical Details discusses -20 dBFS as an alignment level and -9 dBFS as a permitted maximum in the context of its meter design and safety margins. Those technical references are not universal targets for relaxation audio; listen to the recording and leave headroom for the material’s peaks.

The OBS Project’s Audio Mixer Guide (dated 2026-04-03) says, “Most of the time, you want to keep a close eye on the meters. The rest should be ‘set once run forever’.” That describes mixer use and source setup, not a guarantee that an unattended system will remain reliable.
Add a silence alert only after testing its limits
The third-party OBS Forums resource Audio Capture Alert describes real-time input monitoring, a configurable delay before an alert source triggers, and use cases such as a disconnected microphone or an audio capture device that stops playing. Before using it for a relaxation stream, check that it supports your OBS version and operating system, then test it on the actual computer.

- Set the threshold and delay so that intentional quiet passages do not trigger nuisance alerts.
- Cause the condition you want to detect—for example, stop the audio source—and confirm that the alert triggers.
- Verify that the alert reaches a place someone will notice, including any off-site notification step you depend on.
- Check that the monitoring process remains active for the runtime you expect.
No reviewed source establishes a universal silence threshold or guarantees that the plugin will notify an off-site operator every time. A separate OBS Forums plugin, Audio Monitor, can route a source to an audio device for human listening and separate monitoring by source or device; it is not silence detection by itself.

Check YouTube’s incoming stream health separately
Use YouTube Live Control Room to watch stream health and review any messages. For programmatic checks, the YouTube Live Streaming API exposes streamStatus, healthStatus, and configuration issue objects. Its health documentation includes noAudioStream for an ingest with no audio stream, along with audio codec, bitrate, sample-rate, and channel configuration issues (LiveStreams; Configuration Issues for LiveStream Resources).

These reports concern what YouTube receives. They do not judge whether the mix sounds pleasing, the level is comfortable, or subtle noise is audible. For encoder configuration, YouTube lists AAC or MP3 as supported RTMP/RTMPS audio codecs and recommends 44.1 kHz stereo, or 48 kHz for 5.1; its recommended advanced settings list 128 kbps for stereo. These are encoder settings, not loudness targets. Check YouTube’s current encoder guidance before configuring a stream.
