In OBS, watch the audio meter for each intended source, listen to the actual feed periodically, and check YouTube Live Control Room’s stream health. The meter can show whether audio is reaching OBS and whether peaks approach clipping; it cannot tell you by itself whether the ambience sounds right to viewers or alert you when nobody is watching.

What to monitor—and what each check tells you

  • OBS Audio Mixer meters: confirm that the intended audio source is producing signal and show its peaks.
  • Headphone or monitor listening: catches audio that is present but sounds wrong, unbalanced, distorted, or otherwise unsuitable.
  • YouTube stream health: helps you assess delivery to YouTube, not whether the birds and forest sound pleasant or balanced.

Use all three checks; none replaces the others. OBS recommends listening both at the earliest available monitoring output and after the audio reaches OBS. YouTube advises testing with audio and video similar to the planned stream and monitoring stream health during the event (OBS Audio Mixer Guide; OBS Audio Mixer Technical Details; YouTube live encoder guidance).

Set up OBS to monitor the real ambience

  1. Keep the intended source visible in the Audio Mixer. Start playback of the birds-and-forest audio and confirm that its meter moves. If you use multiple sources, check each one rather than relying on a different source’s activity.
  2. Check stereo channels. OBS defaults to stereo. If the recording is meant to be stereo, verify that both channels show signal. If only the first stereo meter moves, OBS notes that viewers will hear that source only in the left channel unless you change routing or downmix it.
  3. Listen at the source, then through OBS. First use the device’s headphone or monitor output where available; then listen through OBS Audio Monitoring. Adjust at the source device first, followed by the operating-system level and OBS fader as needed.
  4. Record a representative test and play it back. Include the actual ambience and video rather than silence or a substitute source. OBS recommends recording a session and listening back before going live; YouTube likewise recommends a test with audio and video similar to the planned stream.
  5. Check the platform feed. During the stream, inspect stream health in YouTube Live Control Room. This is a delivery check, not an audio-quality meter.

Read OBS’s meters without mistaking them for a loudness verdict

The moving colored bar is a peak meter: it shows momentary signal peaks, not an averaged measure of how loud the ambience seems over time. OBS’s peak-hold marker retains the highest reading for 20 seconds, making brief loud events easier to notice. OBS describes red as near clipping; clipping causes distortion. Its general guide says speech may sit in the lower red region and background music or alerts should remain in green, but those examples are not a numeric target for quiet nature ambience (OBS Audio Mixer Guide).

OBS’s technical note, published February 13, 2022, gives an alignment level of -20 dBFS and a permitted maximum level of -9 dBFS for its meter. These are OBS meter reference values, with safety margin for peak readings and equipment alignment—not a YouTube loudness requirement or a guarantee against every downstream problem. The same note describes a smaller VU-style indicator based on RMS integrated over 300 ms; OBS says it is closer to sound pressure than a peak meter, but less useful than a proper loudness meter (OBS Audio Mixer Technical Details).

Peak level and programme loudness answer different questions. EBU Mode specifies momentary loudness over 400 ms, short-term over 3 seconds, and integrated loudness from start to stop. EBU R 128 recommends -23 LUFS ±0.2 LU, with ±1 LU for live programmes; that is broadcast guidance, not an established target for a birds-and-forest YouTube stream. The EBU’s streaming supplement, version 3 published in November 2023, says streaming services typically use targets higher than broadcast standards. The cited guidance does not establish a YouTube-specific LUFS target for this kind of continuous ambience (EBU R 128 and streaming supplement).

Operate the stream: a practical check routine

Before going live

  • Use the actual source and representative video in a test, and confirm the correct meter moves.
  • Listen for hum, dropouts, unexpected volume changes, channel imbalance, or distortion at the source output and through OBS.
  • Record and review a representative session so you can catch problems that a moving meter does not reveal.
  • Use OBS’s meter references as context, not as a substitute for listening or a platform-specific target.

While the stream is running

  • Periodically confirm that the intended source meter continues to move.
  • Watch the peak-hold marker for unexpected transients; it represents the highest level over the preceding 20 seconds.
  • Listen to the program feed periodically through headphones or a monitor output.
  • Check YouTube Live Control Room’s stream health for delivery issues, while separately judging the sound by ear.

YouTube’s encoder guidance lists 128 Kbps stereo audio and a 44.1 kHz stereo sample rate. Those are encoder settings, not loudness targets; follow the current guidance for your encoder setup (YouTube live encoder settings).

What a silent meter means—and how to investigate

If the input indicator disappears or the meter stops moving, OBS is not receiving audio from that source at that moment. That cue does not identify the cause: the source may not be playing, its routing may have changed, or connected capture equipment may be disconnected (OBS Audio Mixer Technical Details).

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Confirm that the audio file, player, or other source is still playing.
  2. Check that the intended source is still present and enabled in OBS and routed to the expected channel.
  3. Check the connected audio interface or capture device and its operating-system input selection.
  4. Listen at the earliest available output, then through OBS monitoring, to locate where signal disappears.
  5. Check YouTube stream health separately; a healthy delivery indication does not prove that the audio source is audible.

Limits of unattended monitoring

The cited OBS and YouTube guidance explains meters, listening checks, preflight tests, and stream health; it does not establish an unattended alert method for prolonged silence or audio-level faults during a 24/7 broadcast. A meter is useful only when someone or something is checking it. Do not treat a visible signal, a successful test, or YouTube stream health as proof that nobody will need to listen or investigate later.

Optional: add loudness readings in OBS

The OBS Forums resource page describes Loudness Dock 0.5.1, an OBS dock that reports momentary, short-term, and integrated loudness, loudness range (LRA), and true peak for audio track 1. The page lists OBS Studio 28.0.0 as the minimum and Windows, macOS, and Linux as supported platforms; it reports an update dated February 3, 2026. Check the resource page for compatibility before installing. It does not establish unattended silence or level alerts, so it should not be treated as a 24/7 alerting system (OBS Forums Loudness Dock resource).
