Monitor a YouTube broadcast in Live Control Room, where the Health Indicator, status messages, preview, and (for encoder streams) real-time metrics can help distinguish an encoder problem from an outbound connection or an individual viewer’s playback issue. Before going live, test moving video and audio, check the preview, and confirm your chosen settings are sustainable on your upload connection.
Prepare and test before going live
A short preflight helps catch source, encoder, and connection problems before viewers arrive. YouTube advises testing with audio and video movement similar to the planned event and continuously monitoring quality during the broadcast. See YouTube’s encoder settings guidance and live streaming tips.
- Test the actual audio and moving video, not just a still screen or silent scene.
- Choose a resolution, frame rate, and bitrate your internet connection can reliably sustain. Run an upload speed test; the available upload capacity needs to accommodate the stream with room for normal network variation.
- Open the Live Control Room preview and inspect picture and sound before selecting Start Streaming.
- Check that viewers can reach the event from the channel or watch page, and test on a mobile device.
- If you record a local archive, confirm that it is being created and that its file size is increasing.
- If you have a backup encoder, test failover before the event: stop the primary encoder or disconnect its Ethernet cable and confirm that the player switches to the backup.
YouTube’s tips advise setting up an encoder stream at least two hours before the event and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before its scheduled start. Those lead times are useful preparation guidance, not a guarantee that a particular setup will work.

YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends RTMP or RTMPS and supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video, up to 60 fps. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR) encoding and a two-second keyframe interval; the interval should not exceed four seconds. Audio guidance lists AAC or MP3. 5.1 surround is supported only with AAC over RTMP/RTMPS. See the complete YouTube settings and bitrate table for combinations beyond the examples below.

These are YouTube’s encoder-ingestion figures, not a guarantee that your connection can sustain the selected bitrate or that every viewer will receive the selected resolution. If the upload connection is unstable, lower the bitrate or output resolution until the encoder can maintain a steady feed.
Monitor stream health while live
Watch the Health Indicator and status messages
Keep Live Control Room open during the broadcast. Its stream dashboard shows stream health and status messages, including guidance tied to detected errors. In the Live Dashboard and Live Control Room, errors appear next to the Health Indicator with timestamps. Red errors are critical and may prevent a stream from starting or cause viewer problems; yellow errors are moderate and may reduce quality. An unresolved error may remain visible. Track metrics and distinguish them from health
For encoder streams, Live Control Room can show concurrent viewers, duration, likes, chat rate, views, and average view duration. Phone streams expose a different set of real-time metrics. These figures describe audience activity; they do not by themselves establish whether the video and audio are technically healthy. YouTube explains the available views in its live metrics help page.
After the stream, the video-level Live report can include peak concurrent viewers and chat messages. YouTube says Analytics metrics become available within minutes of the stream ending, but Live Control Room and Analytics may differ because Analytics data is processed and despammed. For dual horizontal and vertical streams, metrics are combined in Live Control Room; the vertical-only breakdown described by YouTube is available after 24 hours.

Diagnose problems by symptom
The encoder will not start
- If your encoder uses a stream key, open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, retrieve the current key, and update the encoder. A stale or incorrect key can prevent connection.
- If you think the key may have been exposed, reset it from the Stream tab in Live Control Room, then replace it in the encoder. Only a channel owner or manager can reset the key; editors and viewers cannot. See Manage live stream settings.
- If your software signs in to YouTube directly rather than using a stream key, contact the software provider. YouTube says the integration may need an update. Follow the precise error shown in Live Control Room as well.
The picture or sound is poor
- Inspect the output in the encoder itself. Check that the intended camera, media, microphone, and other routed sources are selected and producing the expected quality.
- Review encoder logs and Live Control Room errors. Check encoder CPU load; an overloaded machine may fail to render or encode smoothly.
- Play the local archive, if you are recording one. If the archive also has the defect, that points toward the source, routing, or encoder rather than a viewer’s playback environment.
- If the problem is not visible in the encoder output, YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance suggests trying a different encoder.
The encoder looks healthy, but viewers report buffering or errors
Compare the reports before changing settings. One viewer’s issue may be local to that device or connection. Several viewers on the same shared network may have a common network problem. Reports from viewers on distinct networks can point toward the encoder or stream. These are diagnostic clues, not certain conclusions.
- Ask affected viewers whether they are on the same network and whether other devices or video services have problems.
- Check your own encoder output and Live Control Room health. If both look healthy, test your outbound internet speed and stability.
- If a speed test points to a connection problem, contact your internet service provider. YouTube’s live stream troubleshooting guidance recommends checking the connection and contacting the ISP when appropriate.
Live Control Room reports “Incorrect stream format”
YouTube’s error reference associates this message with an encoder format other than H.264 video and AAC audio. Check the exact error text, then set the encoder to H.264 video and AAC audio for proper ingestion. Do not apply this fix to a different error without checking its message; other failures may have different causes.

Choose an encoder approach that fits the event
There is no single required encoder for every stream. Compare the production requirements with your ability to sustain the chosen bitrate, inspect the local output and CPU load, and recover if the primary encoder fails. YouTube recommends professional-grade hardware encoders for higher-production-value events but does not endorse a particular model in the guidance cited here. Software encoding may suit a setup whose computer can reliably handle capture and encoding; a tested backup encoder matters when an interruption would be costly.

Review the stream after it ends
Use the Live report and Analytics to review the audience and identify when problems occurred. Compare reported times with Health Indicator error timestamps, encoder logs, and the local archive where available. Analytics may differ from Live Control Room because YouTube processes and despams its data; for dual-format streams, allow 24 hours for the vertical-only breakdown described in YouTube Help.
