If an API key or related credential is exposed, treat it as compromised until the issuer confirms it is invalid. Identify the credential and its owner, check for suspicious use, revoke or rotate it through the issuing provider, update every service that depends on it, and monitor for further activity. Deleting the exposed text does not invalidate the credential.
What to do first when an API key is exposed
Start by establishing what the credential is and what it can access. A string that looks like an API key might instead be a personal access token, OAuth token, service-account credential, or another secret; these credential types may have different revocation methods. Scanner metadata can help identify a provider, exposure locations, and sometimes validity or last use, but the issuer is the most reliable authority on whether a credential remains active.
- Record the provider, credential type, exposure location (such as a repository, file, line, log, or workflow), owner, and known consumers.
- Determine whether the location was public or otherwise accessible to people or systems that should not have had the value.
- Check whether the credential is active, what permissions it has, and whether the same value appears in other places.
- Identify the applications, CI workflows, integrations, and environments that use it.
If secret scanning is available, review the alert and its metadata. Otherwise inspect the relevant repository visibility, recent commits and pull requests, logs, and surrounding code. Do not assume a scanner’s validity check covers every credential type.

How to choose between immediate revocation and a replacement transition
An active production credential or a credential exposed publicly deserves urgent containment. Revoke it immediately when service impact is acceptable. If an abrupt outage is a genuine concern, use a short, coordinated replacement transition—but do not treat the old key as safe while it remains valid.

| Approach | Containment speed | Service disruption | When it may fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Revoke the exposed credential immediately | Fastest way to stop further use of that credential once the issuer invalidates it | May interrupt consumers still relying on it | High-risk exposure when consumers can tolerate the interruption or be updated promptly |
| Create a replacement, switch consumers, then revoke the old credential | The exposed credential remains usable during the transition | Can reduce interruption if the switch is coordinated and verified | A short transition is necessary to protect availability and there is a reasoned containment plan |
GitHub’s remediation guidance describes creating a replacement with the same permissions, switching the application, and then revoking the old token when avoiding service interruption matters. Keep the transition as short as possible. Compare the credential’s permissions and blast radius, available usage evidence, and whether every consumer can be updated and tested before deciding.
How to check whether a leaked key was used
Use the provider’s telemetry and your own systems to look for activity associated with the credential. What is visible depends on the provider, your permissions and plan, and which logging or alerts were enabled before the exposure.

- MOST SECURE PASSKEY: Supports FIDO2/WebAuthn, FIDO U2F, Yubico OTP, OATH-TOTP/HOTP, Smart card (PIV), and OpenPGP. That means it’s versatile, working almost anywhere you need it
- PRIMARY & SPARE KEYS: Just like having a spare house key, we recommend buying two YubiKeys - one for daily use and one as a spare. That way you’ll never get locked out of your accounts
Review provider activity and usage
- Inspect audit events, key usage, API activity, and billing for activity you cannot explain.
- Where the provider exposes them, compare actors, source IP addresses, timestamps, and actions with expected use.
- Look for unusual usage patterns, unexpected changes, or infrastructure and other resources you did not create.
Absence of a visible event is not proof that the credential was never used: historical detail and visibility vary. Record the time window and evidence you can access, and broaden the investigation if you find unauthorized activity.

Review the alert or exposure location and search for other copies in source, logs, workflows, repository or organization secrets, environment secrets, and connected integrations. Determine which people and automated jobs could read the value. If the evidence suggests access beyond the credential itself, investigate related account, project, or repository changes as part of the incident.

Revoke or rotate the credential through its issuer
There is no universal API-key revocation endpoint. Use the provider’s documented method for the specific credential type, and confirm that the old credential is invalidated. Removing a string from a file, editing a commit, or deleting and recreating a repository does not, by itself, stop someone from using a credential that is still active.
GitHub credentials
GitHub’s documented REST revocation endpoint applies to specific GitHub token types: classic and fine-grained personal access tokens, OAuth app tokens, GitHub App user-to-server tokens, and refresh tokens. It does not revoke arbitrary API keys issued by other vendors. GitHub says revoked credentials cannot be reactivated, so a new credential must be generated if access is still needed. Use the revocation path appropriate to the token and consult GitHub’s current documentation for the relevant API or interface.

Google Cloud credentials
Review relevant account, API, and billing activity. For a non-public API key, Google Cloud guidance recommends regenerating it and applying appropriate restrictions. A key intended for public use is a different case: review its usage and restrict it where appropriate rather than assuming every detected key has the same credential type or response. If a service-account credential may be compromised, revoke the affected credentials, rotate credentials in affected projects, and remove unauthorized resources.

AWS credentials
AWS advises revoking or rotating exposed credentials in the service where they originated. The correct response depends on the specific credential and service; do not assume that a general repository cleanup or an unrelated provider’s revocation endpoint will invalidate it.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Replace the credential and verify every consumer
After generating a replacement through the issuer, update each application, workflow, integration, and environment that relies on the credential. Store the replacement in a secrets-management service rather than hard-coding it. AWS names Secrets Manager and Systems Manager Parameter Store as storage options for secrets in its guidance.
- Make an inventory of known consumers and owners before changing values.
- Store the new credential in the appropriate secret store and grant access only to the consumers that need it.
- Update each consumer, including automated jobs and deployment environments, to use the replacement.
- Test dependent services and workflows, and confirm they are using the new credential successfully.
- Confirm with the issuer that the exposed credential has been revoked or otherwise invalidated.
Remove the exposed value from source history where appropriate, following your repository’s cleanup procedures. GitHub Docs warns: “It is not sufficient to simply remove the secret from your codebase.” History cleanup reduces continued exposure of the text; it is not a substitute for invalidating the credential.

Continue reviewing fresh secret alerts, provider audit activity, API usage and billing, affected workloads, and repositories for additional copies. Watch for unexpected resources or changes, and expand the investigation if signs point to account or project compromise rather than an isolated exposed key.
GitHub notes that alert visibility depends on relevant features having been enabled and configured before an incident. More generally, historical visibility depends on logging and monitoring that were already in place; a lack of alert is not proof that no exposure or misuse occurred. Provider guidance and feature availability can change, so follow the current documentation for the credential and account involved. The provider-specific guidance described here reflects official documentation accessed October 4, 2026.
