Monitor an Owncast-to-YouTube broadcast at three separate layers: Owncast’s playback and application signals, the server’s underlying health, and YouTube’s incoming stream. A green dashboard or a rising viewer count alone does not prove that viewers are receiving healthy audio and video.

What to monitor—and what each signal tells you

Layer What to check What it cannot prove by itself
Owncast application and playback Stream Performance charts, hardware indicators, and exported metrics That YouTube is receiving a healthy feed, or that every viewer’s playback is good
Host and service Whether the process or service is running, and whether the host has adequate memory, disk, and network availability That the stream is reaching YouTube or playing correctly for viewers
YouTube destination Live Control Room stream health, incoming preview, timestamped errors, and real-time analytics That every viewer can access the watch page or has good playback

Use these as complementary checks. Owncast’s signals concern its server and viewer-delivery path; YouTube’s Live Control Room describes the stream arriving at YouTube.

Check Owncast playback and application health

Use the Stream Performance page

  1. Sign in to Owncast’s admin interface and open /admin/stream-health.
  2. Review the charts for video-segment downloads, player network speed, playback errors, quality changes, and viewer latency. Look for changes that coincide with reports of buffering, poor quality, or interrupted playback.
  3. Compare patterns rather than treating a single chart or reading as a complete verdict. Some detailed playback measurements are reported by supported web players. For players that do not report metrics, Owncast can observe segment delivery itself.

There is an important measurement blind spot: server-observed segment metrics do not represent viewers fetching segments from S3-compatible storage. If your video is stored there, Owncast’s server-observed measurements do not cover those downloads. Player-reported measurements also depend on player support.

Check the hardware view

Use Owncast’s admin hardware view for the high-level CPU, memory, and disk indicators it provides. Treat these as Owncast-side clues, not a substitute for host-level monitoring of the service or process, available disk capacity, memory, and network connectivity. Do not assume every host metric is included in Owncast’s exported metrics.

Collect metrics with Prometheus

  1. Configure Prometheus to scrape Owncast’s admin endpoint at /api/admin/prometheus.
  2. Use the admin basic-auth credentials for the scrape, keep those credentials secret, and protect administrative access. Use HTTPS where available.
  3. Set a scrape interval that matches your monitoring needs while accounting for the data refresh rate: Owncast says exported metric values refresh every two minutes, so scraping more often does not add detail.
  4. Build dashboards or alerts around the metrics you collect, and add host-level monitoring separately for service/process uptime and the host resources you need to track.

Documented exported gauges include active viewers, chat clients, playback errors, and internal CPU usage. The two-minute refresh applies to the exported values; it is not a promise that every metric or other monitoring layer updates at that interval.

Check the stream arriving at YouTube

  1. Open YouTube Live Control Room for the broadcast and inspect the stream-health status.
  2. Read timestamped error messages and investigate them rather than relying on the overall status alone.
  3. Inspect the incoming preview for both video and audio. Then open the public watch page and confirm it is accessible and playing.
  4. Use real-time analytics, including concurrent viewers and duration, as supporting context. A viewer count by itself does not establish that the audio or video is healthy.

YouTube recommends testing the encoder setup and continuously monitoring audio and video quality. Its streaming guidance also recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport and leaving upload-bandwidth headroom. YouTube’s current encoder-settings guidance lists bitrate recommendations by codec and resolution; consult that current guidance for the settings matching your encoder rather than relying on a fixed bitrate table here. Its streaming tips recommend planning for 20% upload headroom.

Protect the Owncast ingest and admin interface

Owncast’s default RTMP ingest port is TCP 1935, using the /live path and a stream key; its web interface defaults to port 8080. In OBS, configure a custom RTMP destination and the matching Owncast stream key. Follow Owncast’s current setup documentation for the exact configuration used by your installation.

  • Do not publish or share the stream key. Treat it as a credential that could allow someone else to send a stream to your ingest.
  • Do not leave default credentials in place. Protect the admin interface and the authenticated Prometheus endpoint from public access.
  • Use HTTPS where available for external metrics collection, and keep authentication credentials out of public dashboards and logs.

The exact firewall, reverse-proxy, and authentication arrangement depends on your deployment; there is no single configuration established here as tested for every Owncast host.

  • Fast Refresh & Free Data Storage - The industrial built-in temperature and humidity sensor takes readings every 10 seconds to make sure the temp/humidity are within the safe range. Every 10 minutes the most recent reading is updated on the online portal. Readings are stored on our servers for 1 year and can be downloaded anytime on a CSV file.

Plan alerts and recovery without assuming a guarantee

For a 24/7 relay, combine several independent checks instead of treating one dashboard as an end-to-end availability monitor:

  • Use a service manager or container platform to supervise the Owncast process, and monitor the host’s resources and network availability.
  • Check the public Owncast page and the YouTube destination independently so a running process is not mistaken for a working broadcast.
  • Use Owncast’s stream-live webhook as an event trigger for external notification or automation where it suits your setup.
  • Test failure scenarios deliberately and verify what your monitoring detects and what recovery actions actually occur.

These ingredients do not amount to a documented, guaranteed restart, failover, or recovery design for an Owncast-to-YouTube 24/7 relay. Automatic recovery depends on your particular environment and should be validated rather than assumed.

Triage problems by comparing the layers

What you observe Where to investigate first Useful next check
Owncast service or hardware indicators look unhealthy The host and Owncast service Check process status, CPU, memory, disk, and network availability using the monitoring available in your environment.
Owncast appears healthy, but YouTube reports ingestion errors The path from Owncast to YouTube Review YouTube’s timestamped status messages, outbound connectivity, and encoder settings.
Some viewers report buffering or poor playback Owncast’s playback and segment signals Review segment, player-network, error, quality-change, and latency charts; account for player-reporting limits and the S3-compatible-storage blind spot.
YouTube reports activity or viewers, but playback quality is uncertain The actual incoming preview and viewer-facing page Inspect audio and video in Live Control Room and confirm that the public watch page is reachable and playing.

This is a diagnostic approach based on what the separate signals observe, not an official guarantee that a particular symptom has only one cause.

Keep a 24/7 stream running without leaving a home computer on

For an Owncast-to-YouTube setup, monitoring still needs to cover Owncast, your host, and YouTube separately. If your goal is to keep a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos without maintaining a server or computer at home, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded video from the cloud; it does not stream from a camera.

  • Nothing has to stay on at home; StreamNeo runs the stream in the cloud.
  • Uploaded video streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, without re-encoding or quality tiers.
  • It automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
  • The first day is free, with no card required (one free day per account).
  • Monthly: $9.99 per month.
