Use YouTube Live Control Room to check whether YouTube is receiving your stream, and an OBS-side dashboard to check whether your computer and encoder are still sending it. These are complementary checks: one cannot stand in for the other. For a 24/7 stream, set alerts for sustained problems and test that someone receives them and can respond.
What to monitor when you are away
Check both the YouTube ingest and the local OBS output. A stream can appear active in OBS while YouTube reports an error, or YouTube can show an active event while OBS is struggling to maintain consistent output.

Check stream health in YouTube Live Control Room
- Open the correct live event’s Live Control Room. Keep its link available to the person responsible for responding to alerts.
- Check stream health and status. Look for YouTube’s reported errors and instructions rather than relying only on viewer counts or other audience metrics. YouTube’s live metrics help
- Compare with OBS-side information. If YouTube reports trouble, check whether OBS is outputting and whether bitrate or dropped-frame readings point to an issue.
Set up remote OBS monitoring
Use OBS WebSocket as the connection layer
OBS WebSocket lets compatible external tools communicate with OBS for control and automation. It is included by default in OBS Studio 28 and later; earlier OBS releases can use separately downloadable releases linked by the project. OBS Remote Control Guide

- Keep password protection enabled. The OBS Project recommends protecting WebSocket with a password because the interface can control scenes and streaming actions. Treat the credential as sensitive.
- Choose a compatible monitoring client. Confirm its current network design, supported devices and whether access is limited to the local network or can be securely used from outside it. OBS describes phone and tablet remote control on the same local network. A phone dashboard may require a deliberate secure remote-access arrangement to work when you are away.
- Connect and verify the readings. If you use a dashboard, confirm that its displayed output state, bitrate and other readings agree with OBS. Control OBS, for example, documents phone display of bitrate, dropped frames and stream duration, plus additional system readings in its status guide. Make monitoring actionable for a 24/7 stream
A dashboard that nobody checks may reveal a failure too late. Choose alerts that identify a sustained problem, assign someone to receive them and periodically test the whole alert-to-response path.
- OBS reports offline or disconnected.
- Bitrate stays unusually low or at zero for a sustained period.
- Network-dropped frames rise over time.
- Rendering or encoding skips, or resource readings, indicate local performance trouble.
- YouTube Live Control Room reports a stream-health error.
Use a sensible delay before alerting so one brief bitrate fluctuation does not trigger a false alarm. Pair OBS output information with YouTube’s stream-health status: each covers a different layer. Review whether the monitoring tool retains useful history and sends notifications, and test that the intended person can receive and act on them.

For routine checks, consider a read-only view and limit stream start/stop controls to authorized operators. This is an operational precaution, not a claim that every monitoring client supports read-only permissions.

OBS reports dropped frames
OBS says dropped frames mean the connection to the remote server is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate; enough dropped frames can disconnect the stream. Check upload stability, the network route, VPN or security and network-optimization software, drivers, and network hardware as relevant. OBS Stream Connection Troubleshooting

OBS’s dynamic bitrate adjustment can reduce dropped frames by lowering bitrate, but OBS notes that it does not fix the underlying cause and lowers video quality. Treat it as a possible mitigation, not a network repair.
OBS looks active but YouTube reports trouble
Check the event’s YouTube stream health and any instructions there, then compare that status with OBS’s output state and bitrate. A local process reporting an active output is not proof that YouTube is receiving a valid stream.

YouTube looks active but output quality is unstable
Check OBS’s dropped-frame and rendering or encoding readings. An active YouTube event does not establish that output quality is stable; use both platform-side and OBS-side signals to narrow down the problem.

Remote dashboard cannot connect
Check whether the client is designed for local-network access only, whether the computer and mobile device can reach one another through the intended secure connection, and whether the WebSocket settings and password match. Do not solve an outside-network access problem by exposing the control interface publicly.

Alerts do not arrive or no one responds
Test the alert destination and escalation path deliberately, including who is responsible for checking YouTube and OBS and what recovery action they are authorized to take. Monitoring documentation or a visible dashboard alone does not establish that notifications or recovery work.
