Urlwatch can check an Indian university admissions page on a schedule, compare the page’s processed content with its previous run, and report changes. Start with the university’s official notice or schedule page, use a direct URL job if the relevant text is served in the page response, and use browser navigation if JavaScript is needed to show it. Then filter out unrelated page content, schedule checks, and configure a reporter if you want alerts beyond the terminal.
Choose the right official admissions page
First find the exact official page that carries the information you need: for example, an admissions notice list, application schedule, counselling notice, or merit list. Confirm its URL through the university’s main website or official admissions instructions rather than relying on a search result or an unofficial repost.
Indian admissions information is spread across institution-specific websites and portals; there is no single feed for updates from every university. Examples include the Punjab Department of Higher Education’s central admission portal, JoSAA’s public notices and schedules, and Savitribai Phule Pune University’s CCEP admissions page. These are examples, not a directory for all institutions. Check each institution’s current instructions and links: schedules, notices, and update channels can change.

If the university publishes updates in more than one authoritative place, monitoring only one page may miss an announcement published elsewhere. Add separate jobs for the relevant pages, or follow an additional channel only after confirming it is linked from the university’s official site.

Set up a Urlwatch job
Urlwatch compares the processed output of each job with its previous run. When it detects a change, it can report the changed URL and a unified diff. Its quick-start workflow is to run Urlwatch, edit jobs with urlwatch --edit, configure reporters with urlwatch --edit-config, and arrange recurring execution. Start with a direct URL
Use a url job when the notice text is available in the HTTP response, without needing a browser to render it. A basic job in the YAML job list looks like this:

Use browser navigation for JavaScript-rendered content
If the page’s relevant notice appears only after JavaScript runs, a direct URL job may not see it. Use a navigate job for browser navigation instead. The exact YAML options depend on the installed Urlwatch version and the page, so follow the handbook’s job syntax and verify that a run actually contains the visible notice text before relying on it.

Urlwatch also supports command jobs, which run a command and compare its output. That is an alternative for a page or workflow that you can reliably process yourself, but it requires maintaining that command and its dependencies.
Filter the page to reduce irrelevant alerts
A whole page can change for reasons unrelated to admissions, such as rotating banners or other site content. Where the page structure permits, use Urlwatch filters to select the relevant notice area and normalize or convert text before comparison. The documentation describes CSS and XPath selection as well as text conversion and matching; it also illustrates chaining extraction, conversion, matching, and sorting filters.
- Run the job against the current page and inspect what Urlwatch retrieves.
- Identify a selector or filter chain that retains the notices or schedule you care about.
- Test the processed output and confirm that the relevant dates, titles, or links remain visible.
- Review future diffs and revisit the filter if the university changes the page layout.
Filtering can reduce noise, but an overly narrow selector can omit a new notice if the page is redesigned or the notice appears in a different section. There is no universal selector that works for every university page.

Schedule checks and choose how to receive reports
Urlwatch runs when it is invoked, so the recurring interval comes from your scheduler rather than an automatic monitoring interval built into a hosted service. Its current introduction recommends running no more frequently than every 30 minutes. Cron is one documented scheduling option; on Windows, Task Scheduler can invoke Urlwatch on a recurring schedule. Choose a cadence that fits the admissions timetable without repeatedly requesting the university site at short intervals.
By default, inspect the output where you run Urlwatch. If you want notifications elsewhere, configure and test a reporter using urlwatch --edit-config. The documentation covers terminal output, email, and several third-party integrations; availability and setup depend on the reporter you configure. Do not assume email or messaging alerts are enabled until you have verified delivery.

What Urlwatch can and cannot tell you
A detected change means the content Urlwatch successfully retrieved and processed differs from the prior run. It does not establish that a new notice applies to your application, that the university’s site has published every relevant update, or that an alert will always reach you. A change may be picked up at the next scheduled run, and delivery depends on your reporter setup. Continue to check the official admissions portal and follow its instructions for applicant-specific status and deadlines.
Troubleshoot missed or noisy updates
- The notice is visible in your browser, but the job output is empty or incomplete: the page may need JavaScript. Try a
navigatejob and inspect the retrieved output. - Urlwatch reports unrelated changes: filter the relevant notice section or normalize changing text, then verify that the actual admissions information remains in the processed output.
- A notice changed on the site, but Urlwatch did not report it: confirm the job still points to the official current URL, inspect the job’s retrieved and filtered output, and check that the run completed after the update.
- You see a change in terminal output but receive no email or message: check the reporter configuration with
urlwatch --edit-configand test that reporter independently of the page job. - The monitored section stops matching after a site redesign: inspect the current page and update the CSS/XPath selector or filter chain; test the resulting output again before depending on it.
- You are unsure whether a notice affects you: use the university’s official admissions instructions or applicant dashboard. Urlwatch reports page changes, not applicant eligibility or status.
