To monitor an automated prerecorded YouTube live stream remotely, check YouTube’s stream health in Live Control Room first. For unattended monitoring, combine YouTube’s Live Streaming API status with separate checks of the streaming host and automation process, then send alerts through a delivery path you can reach away from that host. No single signal proves the whole chain is working: YouTube receiving a feed does not guarantee that the broadcast is healthy or that an alert reaches you.
Check the stream in YouTube Live Control Room

Sign in to YouTube Studio and open the scheduled stream in Live Control Room.

While it is streaming, review the stream health messages. YouTube reports specific health issues and provides instructions for them; use those messages to identify a YouTube-side feed problem.

Review real-time analytics for duration and audience context. Metrics such as concurrent viewers, views, chat rate, and average view duration describe audience activity, not whether the encoder feed is healthy. A low viewer count alone is not evidence that the stream has stopped.

This manual check is useful when you can open Studio, but it requires someone to look. For an unattended monitor, use API state and host checks as separate signals.
Automate checks with the YouTube Live Streaming API
The API represents two different parts of a live stream: the incoming feed (liveStream) and the viewer-facing event (liveBroadcast). A useful monitor records their statuses separately rather than reducing everything to a single “online” flag.
Check incoming stream status and health
Read the liveStream resource’s status.streamStatus and status.healthStatus fields. The documented stream statuses include active, created, error, inactive, and ready; health values include good, ok, bad, and noData. YouTube may also report configuration issues, including insufficient video input or audio/video configuration problems. See the LiveStreams API reference for field definitions.

active means YouTube is receiving data. It does not by itself prove that the content is correct, that health is good, or that viewers can play the broadcast successfully.
Check broadcast lifecycle separately
Inspect the associated liveBroadcast lifecycle status as well as the incoming feed. A broadcast can be bound to a stream, but the broadcast lifecycle is not the same thing as feed status. YouTube’s LiveBroadcasts reference documents broadcast state and monitor-stream functionality; its API overview describes the workflow and advises confirming that the bound stream is active before transitioning a broadcast.

If a broadcast appears stuck in a transition, consult the API overview’s lifecycle guidance rather than treating an active feed as proof that the viewer-facing event has completed its transition.
Monitor the computer and automation too
YouTube can report what it receives, but that does not tell you whether the machine or service generating the prerecorded stream is reachable or whether its automation is still running. As an operational safeguard, add independent checks appropriate to your setup:

Host reachability: determine whether the computer or hosted machine running the encoder can still be reached.

Encoder or automation process: check that the software responsible for playback and sending the feed is running.

Local output and logs: inspect the process’s output or logs for a stopped playlist, failed input, or other local error.

YouTube-side state: compare local signals with stream status, health, and broadcast lifecycle rather than assuming one side confirms the other.

The exact host and process checks depend on the software and hosting arrangement. Treat these as separate operational checks, not as features provided by YouTube’s API.
Make alerts reach you off-site
Send failures to an alert destination you can access away from the streaming machine, and deliberately test that delivery path. A monitor is only useful if it detects the condition and the notification arrives.
YouTube’s monitor stream is for broadcaster preview and testing, not an off-site notification service. Likewise, OBS distinguishes on-stream overlays from remote failure notifications: its help page says, “OBS Studio does not directly provide stream alerts.” It describes third-party alert overlays added as Browser Sources, which appear in the stream rather than serving as a built-in remote paging system. For automated checks, define distinct alert states for feed status, feed health, broadcast lifecycle, host/process status, and notification delivery. Avoid paging on a single transient poll; choose retry and polling rules based on how quickly you need to know about an interruption and how much false alerting you can tolerate. No polling interval guarantees that an alert will be delivered.

Test failure and recovery before relying on the monitor
Rehearse the conditions your monitoring is meant to catch, including a lost input, a stopped encoder, an API polling failure, and an unreachable alert destination. Confirm what each check reports, whether the alert arrives through the separate channel, and whether recovery is visible in both YouTube and host-side signals. These tests are operational practice; their exact procedure depends on your encoder, API implementation, and alert service.

The manual approach is simpler when a person can check Studio. API and host monitoring can surface problems without a person watching continuously, but it requires maintaining the checks and notification path.
