Monitor an always-on YouTube stream at two separate layers: use Azure Monitor to check the Azure VM and any configured guest telemetry, and YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room to check whether YouTube is receiving a healthy stream. A VM that is running does not prove that its video feed is reaching YouTube.
What each monitoring surface can tell you

These are complementary views, not a single end-to-end health signal. The Microsoft and YouTube documentation describes them separately; a combined alert would require a custom integration unless you verify another supported option.
Set up Azure VM monitoring
Start with host metrics
Azure collects host-level VM metrics automatically. In the Azure portal, open the VM’s Monitor experience to review available signals such as CPU, network, and disk utilization. These help identify platform-level availability or resource pressure, but they are not a substitute for workload telemetry. See Microsoft’s guide to monitoring Azure virtual machines.

Add guest and workload telemetry when needed
For operating-system or workload performance, configure Azure Monitor Agent and a data collection rule (DCR). VM Insights or enhanced monitoring can simplify onboarding. Microsoft’s enhanced monitoring tutorial directs operators to the VM’s Monitor experience, configure monitoring, select metrics and workspaces, optionally enable recommended alert rules, and enable the configuration. Allow a few minutes for data to accumulate before concluding that empty charts mean setup failed; also check the agent and DCR configuration.

Create Azure alerts that match the signals you collect
Choose an alert type based on its input: metric alerts evaluate numeric metrics, while log search alerts evaluate collected log data or query results. A VM availability alert or a resource-pressure threshold can be useful, but a process or service alert only works if that signal is actually being collected and the threshold fits the workload.
Microsoft’s recommended VM alert rules are a starting point focused on host metrics; they provide limited visibility into the workload or application itself. Set thresholds against observed baselines and the stream’s needs rather than treating untested values as universal. Alert costs depend on factors such as rule type, dimensions, and evaluation frequency. Check current Azure pricing for the specific configuration; a total running cost cannot be determined without details including VM size and region, workspace, data volume, retention, and alert design. Check YouTube’s live ingestion and stream health
During the broadcast, keep YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room available. Check stream status, health messages, and real-time analytics instead of inferring that the stream is live from the VM’s state. YouTube’s live stream metrics guidance explains the status information and errors shown there.

YouTube’s live streaming error-message reference says messages include timestamps. Red errors are critical and may prevent an event from starting or cause user problems; yellow errors are moderate and may degrade quality. Use the message and timestamp to narrow down when a symptom began, then correlate it with Azure metrics and any guest logs you collect.

Validate the encoder and network before relying on an always-on stream
Use settings for the actual output profile
YouTube’s recommended encoder bitrate depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate. Its table gives different recommendations for profiles such as H.264 versus AV1 or H.265, and 1080p at 30 versus 60 fps. Consult the current YouTube encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions guidance for the profile you are sending; a single bitrate is not universal.
Test bandwidth and content movement
YouTube recommends testing with similar audio and movement before going live, then monitoring stream health and messages during the event. Its streaming tips recommend leaving 20% bandwidth headroom beyond the total planned stream bitrate. Check actual outbound capacity for the VM and stream profile: connectivity disruption can break the stream.

Troubleshoot common monitoring symptoms
- The VM is running, but YouTube shows no healthy feed: Treat these as separate signals. Check Live Control Room’s stream status and timestamped messages, then inspect the VM’s network and the encoder or streaming process.
- Azure charts are empty just after setup: Give collection a few minutes, then confirm Azure Monitor Agent and the DCR are configured and enabled. Host metrics and guest telemetry have different setup requirements.
- CPU, disk, or network pressure appears in Azure: Compare the signal with the stream’s observed baseline and timing. A host metric indicates VM pressure, not by itself the state of YouTube ingestion.
- YouTube reports degraded quality or an error: Use the error severity and timestamp to identify the affected interval. Check the encoder profile against YouTube’s current settings guidance and verify available outbound bandwidth and headroom.
- An alert does not fire for a workload failure: Confirm the alert watches a metric or log that is actually collected. Recommended VM alerts are host-focused; a workload or process condition needs corresponding telemetry and an appropriate rule.
