To monitor an always-on YouTube gaming stream remotely, open the active broadcast in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and check stream health separately from viewer analytics. For unattended checks, a custom monitor can query the YouTube Live Streaming API’s stream-status and health fields—but those fields alone do not provide an automatic alert service.
Although creators sometimes call an archived broadcast a “VOD,” YouTube’s live dashboard is the place to watch a continuous stream while it is running. Use YouTube Analytics for archived and on-demand performance.
Check a running stream in YouTube Studio
- Open YouTube Studio. Select the active stream in the Live section to reach its Live Control Room dashboard. YouTube describes Studio as the place to manage current, upcoming, and past streams. YouTube’s creator guidance
- Read stream health and status first. Look for the health indicator and any accompanying error message. YouTube’s stream-metrics guidance says the dashboard can show stream status and specific errors with instructions. The error guidance describes timestamped entries, with red for critical and yellow for moderate errors. See your live stream’s metrics · Live streaming error messages
- Check audience metrics separately. Live Control Room can show concurrent viewers, views, chat rate, average view duration, likes, reactions, reminders set, and stream duration. These describe audience activity; they do not by themselves establish whether the encoder-to-YouTube feed is healthy.
- Recheck after a warning or interruption. Use the latest health/status information and its timestamp to determine whether the issue is current. An audience count or chat activity is not a substitute for checking ingest health.
What the status and health signals mean
If you build a custom monitor using the YouTube Live Streaming API, these fields provide a practical starting point. - Stream status:
activemeans YouTube is receiving data;inactivemeans it is not. The API also listserror,ready, andcreatedas possible stream states. - Health status: The documented values are
good,ok,bad, andnoData. TreatnoDataas unknown: YouTube’s live backend has no health information, so it is not confirmation that the stream is healthy. - Configuration issues: Review any issues listed with health status rather than relying only on a single overall label.
- Dashboard errors: In Live Control Room, error messages include instructions; timestamp and severity help you judge what needs attention.
Choose the right monitoring method

The API documentation establishes fields that an implementation can query, not a complete alerting product. Check the current API documentation for authentication, request quotas, and implementation details before building a monitor. Do not assume a particular polling interval, guaranteed update latency, or automatic text, email, or push alert.

Keep live monitoring distinct from VOD analytics
For a gaming channel that continuously broadcasts prerecorded gameplay, monitor the active broadcast as a live stream in Live Control Room or through a custom API implementation. Afterward, use YouTube Analytics to assess the archived video and audience performance. YouTube also documents a monitor stream in the LiveBroadcasts API for reviewing a broadcast before it is public; that is a pre-broadcast review feature, not a remote alert for a public stream already running.
