Monitor an AI inference engine as a security-sensitive application workflow, not just as a model-serving process. Correlate requests with identities, sessions, model versions, usage, detections and downstream actions; watch for suspicious sequences as well as individual inputs; and connect alerts to concrete containment and recovery steps. OWASP AI Exchange describes the goal as observing, correlating and logging model use and behavior to identify suspicious events and reconstruct incidents (OWASP AI Exchange: Input threats).

What counts as an exploitation attempt?

For a deployed model, an exploitation attempt can target the model, the surrounding application, or tools and systems the model can reach. OWASP AI Exchange groups crafted inputs against deployed systems as “input threats,” also called inference-time or runtime adversarial attacks. Its examples include evasion, prompt injection, agent-message manipulation, sensitive-data extraction, model exfiltration and AI resource exhaustion (OWASP AI Exchange: Input threats). NIST’s AI 100-2e2025, published March 24, 2025, offers a broader adversarial-machine-learning taxonomy. Use these categories to define what your monitoring must cover, then translate them into rules tied to your own endpoints, permissions and threat model.

Which signals should you monitor?

No single signature or anomaly score can reliably identify every attack. Combine content-related detections with request patterns, output classifications, resource measures and runtime events. OWASP recommends monitoring input distributions, output entropy, latency, drift, traceable access and unusual usage (Secure AI Model Ops Cheat Sheet); the OWASP AI Security Verification Standard controls inventory includes signature detection, behavioral anomaly detection, extraction detection, token attribution and SIEM correlation.

Prompt injection and jailbreak attempts

Look for known attack signatures, repeated efforts to override system instructions or tool policies, suspicious encodings, and recurring variants. A matching phrase is a useful signal, not proof of compromise: attackers can change wording, while ordinary users may discuss attack patterns benignly. Track relevant tool use alongside suspicious inputs. OWASP’s LLM Prompt Injection Prevention Cheat Sheet recommends logging interactions for analysis and alerting on suspicious patterns, including encoding attempts and tool usage.

Systematic probing and model extraction

Investigate repeated or structured queries, unusual query similarity or coverage, high-frequency access, and repeated efforts to infer sensitive information. A sequence can be more informative than any single request: for example, many related questions that progressively map a capability or seek the same protected fact. The AISVS inventory calls for detecting extraction attempts through query-pattern analysis and retaining offending query metadata in extraction alerts (OWASP AISVS controls inventory).

Sensitive or policy-violating output

Classify outputs that may indicate sensitive disclosure or another policy concern, then correlate them with the initiating request, identity and model version. Treat output review as a detection signal rather than the only control: a harmful answer may not match a classifier, and a classifier can flag legitimate content. OWASP’s operational guidance recommends monitoring output behavior and model use (Secure AI Model Ops Cheat Sheet; OWASP AI Exchange).

Resource exhaustion and denial of wallet

Watch for oversized inputs, repeated retries, unusually high token use, excessive concurrency, long tool-call loops and abrupt cost or latency changes. Set limits for requests, tokens, spend, retries, recursion and chain depth where those dimensions apply. OWASP’s Logging Vocabulary recommends logging measured token use, policy thresholds, request identifiers and model or tool identity, and using throttling or termination for resource-exhaustion patterns (Logging Vocabulary Cheat Sheet).

Agent and tool misuse

Monitor which tools are selected, the parameters passed, the user authorization associated with an action, and relevant downstream effects. Alerts should cover unexpected tool choices, actions outside the user’s permitted scope and unusual activity at connected systems. Do not rely on the model to decide whether its own action is authorized: enforce permissions in the downstream service and monitor extension and downstream-system activity. OWASP addresses these controls in LLM06:2025 Excessive Agency.

Operational drift and runtime boundaries

Track changes in input distributions, output entropy and latency, as well as runtime isolation events. Unexpected device access, cross-namespace traffic or attempts to reach metadata endpoints deserve investigation because they may indicate resource abuse or a boundary violation. These signals provide context even when a request does not resemble a known prompt attack (Secure AI Model Ops Cheat Sheet; OWASP AISVS controls inventory).

What should an inference security event contain?

Use structured events and consistent identifiers to correlate the gateway, model-serving layer, guardrail, tool execution, identity system and incident platform. A practical event should capture enough context to investigate without making a permanent archive of sensitive conversations.

This field set synthesizes OWASP’s guidance on traceable access, usage, model-version context and privacy-conscious logging (Secure AI Model Ops Cheat Sheet; OWASP AI Exchange; Logging Vocabulary Cheat Sheet). Capture raw prompts or tool I/O only when there is a documented need and appropriate access, redaction and retention controls. OWASP specifically advises against retaining full prompt and tool I/O by default for injection and resource-exhaustion events; prefer classifications, identifiers, measured usage, thresholds and model/tool metadata.

How should you build detection and response?

  1. Establish a baseline. Measure normal request volume, token use, latency, input distributions and tool use by endpoint, tenant and model. Account for legitimate differences between users and workloads rather than applying one global threshold.
  2. Layer the detections. Use signatures for recognizable attack patterns; behavioral rules for sequence, frequency and volume anomalies; output checks for relevant policies; and infrastructure telemetry for runtime or boundary violations. Treat model-based guardrails as supplementary to deterministic controls.
  3. Set contextual thresholds. Distinguish a burst from one user from coordinated activity across sessions or tenants. Bound tokens, request rates, concurrency, spend, recursion, retries and chain depth where relevant. OWASP’s operational guidance supports monitoring unusual usage and setting limits (Secure AI Model Ops Cheat Sheet).
  4. Attach an action to each alert class. Throttle or terminate resource-exhaustion patterns; block or constrain suspicious tool actions; preserve relevant event metadata and escalate suspected extraction or compromise; and use the incident plan’s rollback or shutdown path for harmful deployments.
  5. Review and tune. Track alert outcomes and false positives. Update signatures and baselines when models, prompts, tools or traffic change, and route investigations through normal incident response rather than leaving AI alerts in a separate queue.

Monitoring does not replace prevention. Secure inference APIs with authentication, authorization, input validation and rate limits; enforce per-tenant resource limits; scope serving credentials; and isolate workloads. For agents, enforce authorization in downstream systems instead of asking the model to decide whether an action is allowed (Secure AI Model Ops Cheat Sheet; OWASP LLM06:2025 Excessive Agency).

How do monitoring approaches differ?

Choose coverage based on the threats you need to detect, the telemetry you can correlate and the response actions your system can enforce. These approaches complement one another rather than acting as substitutes.

Approach What it can reveal What to account for
Signature-based Recognizable injection, jailbreak or encoding patterns. Variants may evade fixed patterns; benign content can resemble an attack.
Behavioral analytics Repeated retries, unusual frequency, systematic probing and suspicious query sequences. Requires context-specific baselines and ongoing tuning.
Output classification Potential sensitive disclosure or other policy-violating output. Can miss cases or flag legitimate output; should not be the sole control.
Resource and cost telemetry Token spikes, excessive retries, loops and other resource-abuse patterns. Requires reliable usage attribution and enforceable limits.
Infrastructure and runtime telemetry Isolation failures, unexpected device access, cross-namespace traffic or metadata-endpoint access. Needs visibility beyond the inference gateway.
Correlated security monitoring Links AI events with identity, tool, infrastructure and broader incident signals. Requires consistent identifiers and integration with security operations.

Compare options against the signal types they cover, visibility across the gateway and downstream systems, privacy cost, response capability and operational burden. An alert-only system has different containment value from one able to throttle, block, constrain tools or trigger a rollback; broader visibility can also mean more integration and review work. The OWASP sources describe these control categories and logging tradeoffs (Secure AI Model Ops Cheat Sheet; OWASP AI Exchange; OWASP AISVS controls inventory; Logging Vocabulary Cheat Sheet).
