Use YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room for a manual check, or poll the YouTube Live Streaming API for unattended monitoring. A zero viewer count—or a page that still opens—does not tell you whether YouTube is receiving a healthy feed. Check stream ingestion and health separately, and check the broadcast’s lifecycle too if viewers must be able to watch the live event.
What to check: viewers, stream health, and broadcast state
YouTube exposes audience metrics separately from stream-health information. Concurrent viewers tell you about the audience, not whether your encoder is still sending usable video and audio. Likewise, a live page responding is not a complete ingest check. Use YouTube’s live metrics guide for audience data, and the Live Control Room or API for stream health.
There are also two API resources to distinguish. A live stream represents the incoming feed and its settings; a live broadcast represents the event presented to viewers. The stream can be receiving data even when the broadcast is not in the lifecycle state you expect. See YouTube’s explanation of broadcasts and streams.
- Stream status: Is YouTube receiving data?
- Stream health: Is the incoming feed acceptable, and are there configuration issues?
- Broadcast lifecycle: Is the event itself in the expected state for viewers?
Manual monitoring in YouTube Live Control Room
Open YouTube Studio and go to Create → Go live to access the Live Control Room. Select the relevant stream or scheduled broadcast, then review its stream status, health information, and any displayed error messages. YouTube timestamps errors; critical errors are marked red and moderate ones yellow. Use the message and timestamp to identify when the problem began and what to inspect next. For a baseline before leaving a loop unattended, confirm that the expected broadcast is live, YouTube shows the stream as active, health is acceptable, and both picture and sound are present. A dashboard check is useful when someone can look at it; it does not itself notify you later if the feed stops.
Unattended monitoring with the YouTube Live Streaming API
For a script or monitoring service, inspect the live stream’s status and health fields rather than relying on the watch page. The LiveStreams resource documentation describes these fields:

An active stream can still have warnings or errors.
Health issues may concern missing audio or video, unsupported codecs, low bitrate, or ingestion starvation. Treat the issue details as actionable signals; “active” alone does not mean the feed is good.

- Establish a known-good baseline. In Live Control Room, verify the intended broadcast, active stream, acceptable health, picture, and sound before relying on automated checks.
- Authorize API access and identify the relevant stream. Use the authenticated channel’s live stream resource and read the status and health fields documented by YouTube. Keep credentials secure; do not expose access tokens in logs or alerts.
- Poll on a schedule suited to your needs. YouTube documents the fields, but does not prescribe a polling interval or alert threshold. Choose these as operational settings, considering how quickly you need to know about a failure and your API usage constraints.
- Store the last successful poll and health-update time. This lets you distinguish an API outage or stale reading from a confirmed healthy feed.
- Alert on separate conditions. At minimum, consider stream inactive, health status
bad, a stale ornoDatareading, and important configuration issues. Include the last status, health-update time, and issue types in the notification. - Debounce transient readings and test the path. A short-lived status change may not warrant the same response as a sustained failure. Choose and document your own debounce rule, then test that a stopped encoder and a degraded or absent feed trigger an alert that reaches someone able to act. These are implementation choices, not YouTube guarantees.
Check broadcast lifecycle when the event matters
If your service promise is that the broadcast itself is live and watchable—not merely that an encoder is sending data—also check the broadcast resource. Use liveBroadcasts.list to find the authenticated channel’s active broadcast and verify its lifecycle state. The method requires authorization, and the channel must be enabled for live streaming. Manual checks versus an API monitor

A simple check that the broadcast page responds does not cover the same signals as stream health and lifecycle checks together.
Troubleshoot a loop stream that appears unhealthy

For dashboard-led diagnosis, follow YouTube’s troubleshooting steps. Match the fix to the timestamped error and the signal that failed rather than treating a low audience count as evidence of a stream outage.
