Use two independent checks: monitor FFmpeg’s process and machine-readable progress locally, then verify YouTube’s stream health in Live Control Room. FFmpeg can show that the encoder is running and producing progress; it cannot prove YouTube is receiving or presenting the stream. For stronger coverage, add an independent check of the public watch page and its audio and video.
What to monitor—and what each signal proves

A reliable monitor treats these as separate layers. A process can stay alive while its output is stalled; FFmpeg can advance while YouTube reports an unhealthy ingest; and a healthy dashboard is not a substitute for checking actual playback.
Set up persistent FFmpeg logs and progress monitoring
Keep a timestamped error log
FFmpeg writes diagnostic logs to stderr by default. Use a timestamped, level-tagged format and save stderr to a persistent, rotated file. For builds that support it, -loglevel repeat+level+datetime+info is one possible format. Confirm the options against the FFmpeg version installed on your host; logging behavior and supported flags can vary by build.

Track machine-readable progress separately
Use -progress to emit periodic key-value records that a wrapper, service manager, script, or monitoring agent can parse. -stats_period sets the update interval. Each update ends with a progress field. Send these records to a dedicated consumer rather than mixing them with human-readable stderr logs.
A monitor can alert when the process exits or when progress records stop arriving. Choose the progress interval and stale-heartbeat threshold to suit your service and acceptable outage window: neither FFmpeg nor YouTube publishes a universal alert threshold. A record such as progress=continue indicates FFmpeg reported progress; it does not confirm YouTube ingest health.

This is a pattern, not a complete streaming command. Add your actual input, mapping, encoding settings, and YouTube RTMPS output. The placeholder values below are not a working ingest address or key:

A real deployment needs a consumer for stdout to parse progress records, timestamp heartbeats, and raise alerts. Protect the command and process environment as well as log files; do not expose the stream key in shared output or alerts.
Check YouTube’s ingest status and actual playback
Use Live Control Room for YouTube-side health
While the stream is expected to be live, check YouTube Live Control Room’s stream health and status for specific messages, and review its real-time analytics. YouTube errors are timestamped; note the time and whether the notice is marked as a critical red error or a moderate yellow issue.
Verify the viewer-facing stream
Check the preview and watch page from an independent device or network. Confirm that the stream is accessible and that both audio and video are present and usable. YouTube’s live-streaming tips say to “Continuously monitor streams for audio and video quality.” Dashboard status matters, but a viewer-side check catches playback problems that local logs alone cannot reveal.

Build a useful alert and recovery workflow
Run FFmpeg under a process supervisor or service manager that records exit status. Decide deliberately whether and how it should restart; an automatic restart is not proof the stream recovered. Route alerts to someone or something that can check YouTube health and viewer playback, not just restart the encoder.

Inspect the final stderr lines, any protected report, service-manager status, disk space, input availability, and host resource state.
- Progress heartbeat goes stale: treat the encoder as stalled until diagnosed. Check logs, host load, and source health. Set the stale limit from your configured progress interval and acceptable outage time; it is a local policy, not an official platform guarantee.
- FFmpeg progresses but YouTube is unhealthy or has no preview: compare timestamps, read YouTube’s error message, and inspect the output URL/key configuration, outbound connection, and available upload capacity.
- Dashboard appears healthy but viewers report failure: test the watch page independently and check audio and video. A dashboard signal does not guarantee smooth playback for every viewer.
Correlate YouTube’s timestamped errors with FFmpeg and host logs. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance recommends checking encoder errors, CPU load, source audio and video, the local archive where applicable, and outbound connectivity. Preserve enough log history to compare the incident with the minutes before it began.
Diagnose common outages by symptom
FFmpeg exited unexpectedly
Start with the process supervisor’s exit status and the final log lines. Check whether the input disappeared, the host ran short of resources or disk space, or FFmpeg reported an encoder or output error. Compare the event time with YouTube’s status and error messages before restarting, so a repeated failure does not erase useful evidence.

FFmpeg is running, but progress stopped
A live process with no fresh progress heartbeat is a warning, not proof of a healthy encode. Inspect the current logs, source availability, and host CPU and resource state. If the source is still readable but progress remains stale, use your supervisor’s deliberate recovery policy and verify the result in Live Control Room and on the watch page.
Progress advances, but YouTube reports an error or shows no preview
Check the exact YouTube message and timestamp, then verify the configured stream URL and key, outbound network path, and available bandwidth. YouTube warns that “A disruption on your connectivity could mean a broken stream.” Its guidance recommends sufficient upload bandwidth with a 20% margin; leave headroom rather than sizing the connection exactly to the stream’s bitrate.

YouTube looks healthy, but playback is broken for viewers
Open the public watch page from a separate device and connection, then check both sound and picture. Confirm that the stream is accessible and the audio and video remain usable. If the report is limited to certain viewers, investigate their playback path rather than assuming the local encoder or YouTube ingest is the only possible cause.

Logs show a disconnect, and reconnect flags seem relevant
Do not assume FFmpeg reconnect options guarantee that an RTMP output will reconnect to YouTube. Reconnect controls are protocol-specific; an input reconnect option is not universal output recovery. Check the documentation for the installed FFmpeg build and the relevant protocol, then validate any recovery behavior with an end-to-end test.

- Confirm the connection details: verify the YouTube stream URL and key in the encoder configuration. Treat the key like a credential and keep it out of shared logs.
- Run a test stream: preview it in Live Control Room and verify that the watch page is accessible before relying on continuous operation.
- Exercise local monitoring: confirm that stderr is captured with timestamps, progress records reach their parser, process exits create alerts, and a stale heartbeat is detected.
- Check the viewer experience: watch and listen to the public stream, not just the FFmpeg terminal or dashboard.
- Test backup-encoder failover: YouTube recommends testing the backup path; verify that it actually takes over and that YouTube and viewers recover as expected.
- Check supporting conditions: confirm upload capacity and bandwidth headroom, and verify local archive integrity where applicable.

How do I know if my YouTube livestream went offline?
Compare FFmpeg process status and progress with Live Control Room’s health/status, then check the public watch page. No single local signal establishes end-to-end availability.
Can FFmpeg tell me when my stream stops?
It can report process exits and emit progress records that a monitor can use to detect a stopped process or stale heartbeat. You need YouTube-side and viewer-side checks to determine whether the stream is reaching and playing on the platform.
Why does FFmpeg say it is running when my YouTube stream is down?
The FFmpeg process can remain alive while its output is stalled, disconnected, or not being presented properly by YouTube. Compare fresh progress with YouTube’s ingest status and an independent playback check.
