Monitor a website from multiple locations by scheduling the same browser check in regions that matter to your users, asserting that the page or journey actually works, and saving screenshots and diagnostics when it fails. A screenshot alone is evidence of what rendered—not proof that a page is healthy—so pair it with a meaningful assertion.
What a screenshot check should verify
Choose one important page or user journey and define a clear success condition. For a landing page, that might be the expected main heading appearing; for sign-in or checkout, it could be reaching the relevant success state. Keep an initial check narrow enough that a failure points toward a useful investigation.
Use a browser test to navigate and assert that state. Capture a screenshot during the run or when the assertion fails. If visual changes matter, compare the result against an approved baseline. Playwright Test supports screenshot comparisons with toHaveScreenshot(); see Playwright’s visual comparisons documentation.
Visual comparison is sensitive to the environment, not just the site. Playwright warns that rendering can vary by host operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. Keep those settings stable between baseline creation and scheduled runs, and review proposed baseline changes deliberately.

Set up a multi-location monitoring check
- Select the page or journey. Start with a page whose failure has a concrete consequence for users, and define its expected state.
- Build the browser check. Navigate to the page, assert the expected content or outcome, and capture a screenshot. Add a visual comparison when layout or appearance regressions are part of the risk you need to detect.
- Choose relevant locations. Run the same check from regions representing your users, then inspect results separately by location. A single aggregate status can hide a failure limited to one region.
- Schedule runs and route alerts. Choose a cadence and failure threshold based on the impact of an outage and how reliable the signal is for your site. There is no universally correct interval or threshold.
- Investigate failures with artifacts. Compare the screenshot with the assertion result and, where available, inspect traces, console logs, network requests, or video. Decide whether the issue is regional, site-wide, or simply a rendering change.
Hosted services document scheduled browser checks across locations. Datadog describes periodic browser tests from managed or private locations, while Checkly describes scheduled Playwright monitoring across global locations. Consult their current product pages for the capabilities they describe: Datadog Browser Testing and Checkly Playwright monitoring.
Choose self-managed or hosted execution
Self-managed Playwright
Playwright Test can provide browser assertions and screenshot comparisons. In a self-managed setup, you are responsible for scheduling executions, arranging runs from the required locations, storing artifacts, and routing alerts. The Playwright visual-comparison documentation explains screenshot baselines, but does not establish a particular multi-region hosting architecture.

Hosted synthetic monitoring
A hosted service may supply scheduling and managed execution locations; product-specific offerings may also include private locations and failure artifacts. Datadog documents managed and private locations, browsers, devices, and periodic runs. Checkly describes screenshots and traces among its monitoring artifacts. These are vendors’ descriptions of their own products, not independent evaluations.

- Location coverage: Can the check run from regions that reflect your audience?
- Network access: Do you need managed locations, private locations, or both?
- Browser and viewport coverage: Can you run the browser and dimensions your check requires?
- Test reuse: Can you reuse an existing Playwright test?
- Failure evidence: Which screenshots and other diagnostic artifacts are available, and how are they retained?

Keep results reliable and control noise
Use the same browser, viewport, and runner settings for baseline generation and recurring comparisons. Changes in operating system, browser version, hardware, or headless mode can alter pixels without indicating a user-visible defect. When an image comparison fails, check whether the environment or expected page content changed before treating it as a site regression.
Rank #3
Set cadence and alert thresholds according to the consequence of the monitored journey and the stability of the check. A check that is too broad may make failures hard to diagnose; an overly sensitive visual baseline may generate noise. Keep the assertion focused, preserve useful artifacts, and review location-specific results rather than relying only on a combined status.
Troubleshoot a failed check
- Only one region fails: Compare that location’s screenshot, assertion, and available network or console evidence with passing locations. The difference may be regional rather than site-wide.
- The screenshot differs but the assertion passes: Check for legitimate content or layout changes and for runner differences such as browser version, operating system, viewport, or headless mode before updating a baseline.
- The page appears blank or incomplete: Use the assertion result and any available trace, console logs, network requests, or video to determine whether navigation, loading, or the expected page state failed.
- Alerts are noisy: Revisit whether the check targets a meaningful user outcome, whether its visual comparison is stable, and whether the threshold suits the impact of the monitored failure.
- Artifacts are insufficient: Check which diagnostics the chosen runner or hosted service retains and make sure the failure workflow exposes the evidence needed to investigate.
Checkly describes screenshots, video, traces, console logs, and network requests as monitoring evidence; Datadog documents browser-test results and performance details by location. See Checkly synthetic monitoring and Datadog’s browser-test getting-started guide for their own product details.

ScreenshotNeo offers a website screenshot API and MCP server. A single request captures an image or PDF; it can accept cookie and consent banners as a visitor and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture, with each step configurable. Only clean shots are billed: bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and responses include X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Its MCP server gives AI agents tools for taking screenshots, getting page information, and capturing PDFs. This is a capture API, not a substitute for scheduled multi-location assertions: use browser monitoring when you need to test a journey across regions.
