To stop routine ads from triggering Fluxguard alerts, crawl the page once, add an Exclusion Filter for the ad container, then crawl again to confirm that the filter removes the noise without hiding useful content. Use a CSS selector or Fluxguard’s Visual Selector, and apply the rule at page, session, or account level according to where it should take effect.

Set up an Exclusion Filter for ads

  1. Add the page and complete its initial crawl. Fluxguard uses the initial version to help validate filter performance.
  2. Open the appropriate settings. Use Page Settings for one page, Session Settings for every page in that session, or Account Settings for a rule intended to apply across the organization.
  3. Add an Exclusion Filter. Enter a CSS selector for the ad area, or use Visual Selector to click that area. Fluxguard uses the selector to identify which part of the page to filter.
  4. Save the filter and run another crawl. Inspect the resulting capture and change summary. Fluxguard notes that the effect of a filter may become apparent in the change summary after the first crawl with filters.
  5. Adjust the selector if needed. If useful content disappears, narrow or replace the selector. Prefer a stable container that contains only irrelevant material over long, deeply nested selectors that rely on fragile page structure.

The goal is to reduce irrelevant alerts, not to guarantee that every ad-related change or false positive disappears. Recheck the capture after a site redesign, ad-tech change, or suspected selector failure.

Choose the right way to ignore ad-related changes

Fluxguard provides several controls, but they act at different stages. Choose based on whether the ad content should remain in the saved capture and which comparison signal is noisy.

Control What it does When it fits
Exclusion Filter Removes matching content from the DOM before capture. Use when the ad slot and its contents are irrelevant to the captured page. A selector that is too broad can remove useful content or affect rendering.
Inclusion Filter Focuses monitoring on a selected area and removes everything else from the DOM. Consider it when many page sections are noisy and only one or a few regions matter. A blank result can mean the selector did not match or the selected area is missing.
Selector Ignore Disregards a selected tag during HTML comparison without removing it from the saved DOM. Use when the content should remain in the capture but its HTML changes should not count. Available when HTML change detection is selected.
Selector Attribute Ignore Disregards selected attributes, such as a changing class or inline style, while retaining the element. Use when changing attributes create HTML noise but the element itself should remain. Available when HTML change detection is selected.

If the ad is noisy only in one comparison type, choose a control that applies to that signal rather than treating all filtering options as interchangeable. Fluxguard says text change detection is the default primary strategy: after it detects a change and records a new version, it may run additional comparisons, including HTML, text, visual or pixel, network activity, headers, cookies, and extracted entities. Visual monitoring is normally a secondary analysis after the primary strategy records a version, although Fluxguard says it can be configured as primary.

Other settings address other kinds of noise: keyword focus and ignore options apply to text, network blocks target third-party resources, and a visual pixel threshold affects visual comparisons. They are not substitutes for excluding a DOM region when the ad slot itself should be removed.

Keep the filter stable and useful

  • Start without filters and add them when false positives justify the extra maintenance.
  • Use as few filters as practical and avoid overlapping rules. Fluxguard’s tutorial puts it plainly: “Use as few filters as possible. Adding more filters can create brittleness.”
  • Keep selectors simple. A broad, stable container is often easier to maintain than several precise selectors or a long chain of nested elements.
  • After a filter change, rerun a crawl and inspect both the capture and the changes being monitored. If the page goes blank or important material vanishes, the selector may be wrong or too broad.
  • Revalidate after page redesigns or changes to advertising technology. A selector can stop matching, or a parent container can begin to include meaningful content.

Fluxguard’s tutorial suggests considering a smaller set of inclusion filters if a setup has more than five exclusion filters. That is a maintenance suggestion, not a guarantee that inclusion filters will suit every page.

If you need a clean page screenshot rather than a Fluxguard monitoring rule, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. One GET request can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Its clean-shot process accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses include X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. AI agents can use its MCP tools, including take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf.

For example, this cURL request saves a WebP screenshot of Stripe. Replace the URL with the page you want to capture and supply your API key. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for options and parameters.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots. That is a screenshot service, not a replacement for configuring Fluxguard’s monitoring filters. Sign up for ScreenshotNeo’s free plan.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does an Exclusion Filter remove an ad from the saved capture?

Yes. Exclusion Filters remove matching content from the DOM before capture. Use a Selector Ignore instead if the content should remain in the saved DOM but be disregarded during HTML comparison.

Why did the page or capture turn blank after adding a filter?

The selector may not match the intended area, or an Inclusion Filter may target an area that is missing. Recheck the selector and the capture after another crawl.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Will excluding the ad area prevent every alert caused by advertising?

No. The filter is intended to reduce irrelevant alerts, but changes in page structure or ad technology can affect the match. Validate the result with a new crawl and recheck it when the page changes.
