Use a persistent authenticated browser state to open the page, capture it under a consistent environment, and compare each run with an approved image. For repeatable monitoring, Playwright is a practical route: its CLI can save and reload browser state, and Playwright Test can detect visual differences with toHaveScreenshot().
Choose capture or visual monitoring
A screenshot gives you an image; monitoring also needs a repeatable way to compare that image with an accepted baseline and decide what to do when they differ. Use a regular capture when you need an artifact to inspect. Use a visual assertion when the goal is to detect changes automatically. Scheduling, notifications, review thresholds, and screenshot retention are deployment choices, not features established by the cited documentation.
Set up authenticated access safely
Playwright CLI can preserve browser state within a session and supports saving and loading state for later use. The CLI’s default in-memory profile keeps cookies and storage state between calls in a session, but that state is lost when the browser closes, according to Playwright’s session documentation. Save the authenticated state after signing in through an approved account, then load it in the monitoring run.

- Save the authenticated browser state using the save-state operation documented for the Playwright CLI.
- In each monitoring run, load that state before navigating to the target page.
- Protect the saved state as a credential: restrict access and store it somewhere appropriate for sensitive authentication data.
The documentation establishes that state can be saved and loaded; it does not prescribe a particular storage security implementation. Avoid using a personal or broadly privileged account when a least-privilege monitoring account will work.

Capture the page consistently
Decide what image represents the page you want to monitor, then use the same capture scope in every run. Playwright’s MCP documentation describes screenshots of the viewport, a selected element, or the full scrollable page: Playwright MCP documentation.
- Viewport: useful when the page’s visible first screen is the target.
- Element: useful when a particular panel or component matters more than the rest of the page.
- Full page: useful when changes anywhere in the scrollable document matter.
Wait for the relevant content to appear and avoid capturing transient loading states. Consider whether timestamps, ads, rotating content, or other expected variation should be masked or excluded from comparisons. The cited Playwright sources describe capture and comparison behavior, but do not prescribe a universal wait strategy or masking policy.
Compare each run with a baseline
Playwright Test provides expect(page).toHaveScreenshot(). The first run creates a reference screenshot; later runs compare against it. The assertion waits until two consecutive page screenshots match before comparing the final image with the expectation. Review and approve the initial reference before treating it as the intended appearance. When an update is expected, review the new image and deliberately update the baseline rather than automatically accepting every difference. The sources establish the baseline comparison behavior, but do not specify an approval process or alert threshold.
Keep the monitoring environment stable
A difference does not necessarily mean the website changed. Playwright warns that rendering can vary with the host operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. Keep these factors as consistent as practical between baseline creation and monitoring runs:
- Operating system and browser version
- Viewport dimensions and device scale
- Headed or headless browser mode
- Page state, including when capture occurs and how dynamic content is handled
If these conditions change, inspect the cause before treating the diff as a site regression. A monitoring setup should also decide who reviews differences, how screenshots and login state are access-controlled, and whether runs are scheduled or alert on failure; the cited documentation does not establish a single service that handles all of those decisions.

Alternative capture methods
For a one-off headless Chrome image, Chrome for Developers documents a --screenshot option. Its documentation is an older page and should not be treated as a complete current CLI reference: Chrome headless documentation. A direct browser capture can produce an image, but authenticated repeated monitoring still requires a reliable way to restore login state and compare against a baseline.

The monitoring run is signed out
The saved state may no longer be valid, or the run may not have loaded it before navigation. Sign in again through the approved account, save fresh state, and ensure the run restores it before opening the protected URL. Treat refreshed state as sensitive.

The screenshot captures a loading screen
The page may not have reached the intended state when the capture ran. Wait for the relevant content or a stable page condition, and avoid relying on a fixed delay alone if page load time varies.
Every run reports visual differences
Check whether the operating system, browser version, viewport, device scale, or headless mode differs from baseline creation. Then look for dynamic content such as timestamps or rotating elements that should be excluded or handled consistently.

The screenshot scope is wrong
Confirm whether the assertion or capture targets the viewport, an element, or the full page. Use the same target and dimensions for the baseline and subsequent runs.
Plan the operational pieces
Before relying on screenshot monitoring, define the run schedule, alert destination, baseline approval process, acceptable visual noise, and retention/access policy for both images and saved login state. These vary by site and team; the cited documentation does not establish universal defaults or a complete monitoring service.
