Monitor a redesign by capturing the same important pages and user-journey states on a schedule, then comparing each capture with an approved visual baseline. Review every meaningful difference before updating that baseline. Screenshot checks reveal visible changes; they do not establish that a site is available, its interactions work, it is accessible, redirects are correct, or search indexing is healthy.
What scheduled screenshots can—and cannot—tell you
A scheduled visual check answers a focused question: does this page still look as expected under the conditions you chose? During a redesign, that helps catch unintended layout changes before launch and monitor key public pages afterward.
It is one layer of quality assurance, not a complete launch test. Pair visual comparisons with separate checks for interactions, accessibility, availability, errors, redirects, and search crawling or indexing. Choose screenshot coverage that reviewers can act on
Start with representative page templates, high-value pages, and important states in user journeys—not an arbitrary pile of URLs. Each capture should identify a recognizable page, state, browser, and viewport so a reviewer can judge whether a change is expected.

- Templates: Include examples of distinct layouts such as a landing page, article, product or service page, and account flow, where relevant.
- High-value pages: Prioritize pages central to conversion, support, or the redesign’s main goals.
- Journey states: Capture meaningful states such as a menu open, a form displaying validation, or a confirmation screen if those visuals matter. A screenshot alone does not verify that the interaction works.
- Viewports and browsers: Select the combinations that reflect your audience and support commitments. Chromatic documents configuring snapshots by browser, viewport, and theme: snapshot configuration.
Keep the set small enough that people can review its diffs. Expand it when a missed visual defect, a new template, or a risk justifies another capture.
Make captures repeatable before trusting the differences
A visual comparison is useful only when the baseline and new capture are produced under comparable conditions. Playwright warns that rendering can vary with the host OS, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, headless mode, and other factors: Playwright visual comparisons.
- Use a consistent browser version and operating environment for baseline creation and scheduled runs.
- Fix viewport, device scale factor, theme, locale, and relevant page data. Keep the page state and test account data stable where possible.
- Wait for a meaningful ready condition rather than relying on an arbitrary short delay. For content that changes over time, freeze or mock the input when appropriate.
- Consider masking a clearly nonessential variable area, such as a live third-party embed, only if hiding it will not conceal a redesign defect.
- Keep capture timing consistent and let the page settle before saving the image.
Clocks, rotating promotions, personalization, animations, and third-party content can create noisy diffs. These mitigations are implementation choices; Playwright does not automatically make every page source deterministic.

Playwright Test can capture a page screenshot and compare it with a stored reference using toHaveScreenshot(). The first run creates a reference; later runs compare against it. See the Playwright snapshot documentation for the current API and update workflow.

Install and create a test
In a project with Playwright Test configured, add a visual test such as tests/redesign.spec.ts:

Replace the example URL with a stable test or preview environment. If the application continues making network requests, networkidle may not be an appropriate readiness condition; wait for a page-specific selector or another reliable signal instead. This test captures a full-page image. Remove fullPage: true if the intended comparison is only the visible viewport.
Create and review the baseline
- Run the test in the same controlled environment you intend to use for future comparisons. The first run produces the reference screenshot.
- Inspect the reference before treating it as approved. A baseline should represent the design you intend to preserve, not merely the first image the test happened to create.
- Run the test again after a code or deployment change. Review the generated mismatch and diff to distinguish an intentional redesign, an actual regression, and capture noise.
- Update the reference only after a person confirms that the changed appearance is intended. Playwright supports updating snapshots; use the documented update process rather than automatically accepting every new image.
Keep references with the project so changes can be reviewed alongside the code, and ensure the CI environment uses the same relevant browser and rendering conditions as the baseline.
Schedule checks during and after the redesign
Run the same browser test wherever your CI system or another scheduler can reach the target environment. There is no universal correct interval: choose a cadence based on release frequency, page risk, and the cost of finding a defect late.

- Run checks against each release candidate or deployment preview so visual regressions can be reviewed before launch.
- Keep the approved pre-redesign or intended redesign reference distinct from unreviewed output. Do not let a routine scheduled job silently replace it.
- Make failed comparisons visible to the people responsible for reviewing the page, and retain enough output to inspect the changed image and diff.
After launch
- Keep a smaller recurring suite for the most important public pages and journeys.
- Schedule it where the runner can access the live site, or use a test environment when authentication or controlled data is required.
- When a comparison fails, inspect the page and capture conditions before deciding whether the change is expected. Record and approve a new baseline only after that review.
Choose native snapshots or hosted visual review
Playwright’s native comparisons keep reference images in the project and fit teams that want to own their test code and review flow. Hosted services can centralize diff review and baseline management. Choose based on who will review changes, where the team wants baselines to live, required browser and viewport coverage, CI fit, and how you will control expected or noisy diffs—not simply on the number of screenshots produced.

Treat URL changes as a separate migration
If the redesign changes URLs, visual snapshots cannot verify that visitors and crawlers reach the right destinations. Google recommends preparing and thoroughly testing the new site, mapping current URLs to new URLs, configuring redirects, and monitoring user and crawler traffic on both the old and new URLs: Google’s site-move guidance.
Google notes that ranking fluctuations can occur while it recrawls and reindexes a site. Its Search Console Change of Address tool is for moves between domains or subdomains, not ordinary path changes or HTTP-to-HTTPS changes. Google’s help guidance says to maintain redirects for at least 180 days: Change of Address tool guidance. Keep redirect tests and Search Console monitoring in the migration checklist rather than treating a passing screenshot as evidence that indexing is healthy.

Troubleshoot noisy or failing comparisons
- Diffs appear everywhere: Check whether baseline and scheduled runs use the same browser, operating environment, viewport, scale factor, and page state. Rendering can vary across host conditions, so align the environments before changing references.
- Only a changing region differs: Look for clocks, promotions, personalization, animation, or third-party embeds. Stabilize or mock the input where possible; mask a region only when it is genuinely nonessential to the review.
- The page is captured before it is ready: Replace a fragile short delay with a page-specific selector or reliable readiness condition. Investigate network activity if waiting for network idle never settles.
- A mismatch is intentional: Confirm it against the approved redesign, then update the reference through the team’s review process. Do not auto-approve a failed comparison.
- The scheduled job cannot reach the page: Check the runner’s access to the target environment, required authentication, and any network restrictions. A capture failure is not a visual pass.
- The screenshot looks correct but the launch still fails: Test links, forms, redirects, accessibility, availability, and indexing separately; a screenshot comparison does not exercise or prove those properties.
