Monitor a redesign by maintaining an old-to-new URL map, testing every redirect before launch, and then checking redirect behavior, Google indexing, server logs, and user traffic as separate signals. No single report answers all four questions: Search Console shows Google’s search and indexing data, logs show requests reaching your servers, analytics shows measured visits, and a crawler or script can verify the migration map URL by URL.
Build a URL-by-URL migration map before launch
Start with an inventory of existing URLs and decide what happens to each one: stay at the same address, move, merge into another page, or be removed. For every moved page, record its old URL and the most relevant new destination. A redirect map is the control document for both pre-launch testing and post-launch diagnosis; without it, a successful HTTP response alone cannot tell you whether users and crawlers landed on the right page.
Prepare the new site and verify important pages and assets, including images, forms, and downloads. Check that pages can be crawled and that migration-only noindex directives or robots.txt blocks will not remain in place at launch. For a large site, Google suggests considering a staged move if dividing the launch makes issues easier to detect and fix; small and medium sites are generally moved simultaneously. Google’s site-move guidance explains these trade-offs.
Test the redirects at inventory scale
What to verify
Use a crawler, command-line tooling, or a script to request every old URL in the map, not just a convenient sample. For each one, compare the observed result with the intended destination. Check that redirects are permanent and server-side where possible, go directly to the final relevant page, and do not create chains. Also confirm that each destination loads successfully and inspect for unexpected 404 or 5xx responses.

Google names crawling software such as Screaming Frog as one way to examine redirects, and also describes using scripts or command-line tools for large sets. A crawler or script can verify technical behavior across many URLs; it cannot establish that Google has indexed the destinations or that search demand has remained constant.
Keep redirects useful over time
Do not treat redirects as a brief launch-only patch. Google recommends keeping redirects in place for as long as possible, generally at least a year, and notes that users may continue to access old URLs beyond that period. Update internal links to point directly to current URLs so site navigation does not depend on redirects.

What to check at launch
- Request old URLs and verify that they redirect to the mapped destinations.
- Open new destinations and check for missing assets, unexpected errors, or server overload.
- Look for redirect chains, incorrect targets, and accidental robots.txt or
noindexblocks. - Submit the updated sitemap for new URLs in Search Console; keep old URL sitemap information available long enough to compare progress.
- Update internal links to the new addresses and retain access to old and new server logs.
Google’s crawling guidance notes that sitemaps help with discovery but do not guarantee that every submitted URL will be crawled or indexed. Use sitemap counts as one signal, not proof that the move is complete. See Google’s troubleshooting guidance for crawling errors.

Search Console: Google’s search and indexing signals
Compare the old and new URL sets in Search Console. The expected broad pattern is old URLs declining while new URLs become indexed. Review indexing and crawl reports for error spikes, inspect individual affected URLs with URL Inspection, and watch queries, impressions, and clicks as new pages appear. Search Console describes Google’s systems; it does not replace a full redirect test or tell you what every visitor did.

- Ultra-thin bezels: Maximize your viewing experience with thin bezels.
Server logs: requests and response codes
Review logs for Googlebot requests to old and new URLs and for unexpected status codes. Logs can help distinguish URLs that have not yet been revisited from those Googlebot is requesting but cannot fetch successfully. Keep the old and new log data accessible so you can compare activity across the move. A rise in crawl errors or server capacity problems warrants investigation rather than an assumption that indexing reports alone explain the cause.
Analytics: measured visitor activity
Use your installed analytics, if available, to compare user traffic to affected pages. Analytics reflects measured visits, not crawl or indexing status. Read it alongside Search Console and logs: a traffic change can coincide with a technical issue, but the metrics answer different questions.

Why did organic traffic drop after a redesign?
Check technical causes first, at both site and URL level:
- Old URLs have missing redirects or point to irrelevant destinations.
- Redirects lead through chains, or new destinations return 404 or other unexpected errors.
- A migration-only robots.txt block or
noindexdirective is still active. - The submitted sitemap is stale or omits the new URLs.
- Pages cannot render correctly because required resources are unavailable, or the server cannot handle crawl demand.
Then compare which pages and queries lost impressions or clicks. Seasonality and shifts in user interest can reduce search traffic independently of migration faults. Google also cautions that ranking fluctuations can occur while it recrawls and reindexes a moved site; an early dip by itself does not establish permanent damage. Its guidance on debugging Google Search traffic drops covers migration changes alongside other possible causes.

How long should monitoring continue?
Do not set a universal recovery deadline. Google says a few weeks is typical guidance for many small-to-medium site moves, while larger sites can take longer; processing depends on the number of URLs and the crawling speed the server can support. Google states that “There are no fixed crawl frequencies; how fast Googlebot crawls depends on the size of your site, and the speed of crawling that’s possible.” It also says Googlebot must visit every old and new URL at least once for Google to consider a move complete. Those are crawl and processing considerations, not a promise of ranking recovery by a particular date.
Keep comparing the inventory, Search Console, and logs until the old and new URL sets show the expected transition and outstanding errors are resolved. Continue watching search and user traffic for changes that need diagnosis; do not infer completion from a single sitemap submission or one week of stable data.
Or skip the browser setup
If your migration checks also require screenshots of rendered pages, ScreenshotNeo can return a screenshot or PDF through one GET request. It accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be disabled. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers identify the page verdict and whether it was billed. Its MCP server offers screenshot tools for AI agents, including Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.
