Monitor responsive visual changes by capturing the same pages and interface states at selected mobile and desktop viewport widths, then comparing each new screenshot with a reviewed baseline. Playwright Test provides screenshot comparisons in your test suite; Chromatic and Percy offer hosted capture and review workflows. A viewport is a test input, not a guarantee of physical-device coverage, so choose widths that exercise your site’s actual layouts and breakpoints.
Choose what to monitor
Start with a small, meaningful set of pages and states. Include layouts where a visual regression would affect users, rather than taking screenshots of every URL by default.
- Representative pages, such as the homepage, a product detail page, or a key checkout step.
- Important interaction states, such as an expanded navigation menu or a dialog that users rely on.
- Responsive transitions where content rearranges, navigation changes, or columns collapse.
For each selected page or state, decide which viewport widths matter and keep the capture procedure repeatable. A screenshot of a page at one width says nothing about how it renders at another width unless you capture and compare that width too.

| Approach | How it works | Viewport and review workflow | Practical caveat |
|---|---|---|---|
| Playwright Test | Stores screenshot references and compares later runs using its screenshot assertions. | Set browser projects or viewport/device settings for the widths you want; review changes and update references when intentional. | Rendering can vary across operating systems, browser versions, settings, hardware, power sources, and headless mode. Keep comparison runs consistent. |
| Chromatic | Hosted visual testing integrated with Playwright and other documented integrations. | Configure viewports globally or at test level in supported integrations, then review hosted snapshots. | Chromatic’s FAQ says its smaller viewport tests are not iOS or Android physical-device tests. |
| Percy | Hosted responsive screenshot testing using configured widths. | Provide responsive breakpoint widths and inspect hosted build results. | Each responsive width counts as a separate screenshot toward monthly screenshot usage under its documented model. |

Set up mobile and desktop captures with Playwright
Playwright Test can compare screenshots with toHaveScreenshot(). The following JavaScript example captures one page at two explicit viewport widths. Replace the example URL and dimensions with your own page and the breakpoints you need to monitor.
1. Install Playwright Test
npm init playwright@latestUse the setup prompts to add Playwright Test to the project. The example assumes the generated test setup is in place.
2. Add a test with separate viewport captures
import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
test('homepage renders at desktop and mobile widths', async ({ page }) => {
await page.setViewportSize({ width: 1440, height: 900 });
await page.goto('https://example.com');
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('homepage-desktop.png', { fullPage: true });
await page.setViewportSize({ width: 390, height: 844 });
await page.reload();
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('homepage-mobile.png', { fullPage: true });
});The first run creates reference screenshots; subsequent runs compare captures against those references. Review any reported differences before accepting them. Playwright documents this workflow at its visual comparisons guide.

3. Run the test and review the baseline
npx playwright testCommit the generated reference screenshots with the project so future runs can compare against the same approved baseline. When a change is intentional, inspect it first and update references with the update-snapshots option:
npx playwright test --update-snapshotsDo not refresh references simply to make a failing comparison pass; that can turn an accidental regression into the new expected appearance.
Select viewport widths that expose real responsive changes
There is no universally correct pair of “mobile” and “desktop” widths. Use the breakpoints and layouts your site actually supports. A narrow viewport and a wide viewport are a useful starting point, but add captures where the design changes materially, such as a navigation switch or a grid collapsing into a single column.

Chromatic documents viewport configuration at the global or test level for Playwright and other supported integrations in its viewports guide. Percy documents supplying responsive breakpoint widths in its responsive testing guide.
Make captures repeatable
Visual comparisons work best when the capture environment is consistent. Playwright notes that screenshots can vary with the host operating system, browser version, browser settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. Keep baseline creation and later comparisons in the same environment where possible, and investigate environmental changes before treating a difference as a site regression. See Playwright’s screenshot comparison guidance.
Capture the same URL, viewport, and user-visible state each time. For interactive states, make the test perform the same actions before capturing. If a hosted workflow handles capture and review, check its documented viewport configuration and usage model before scaling up; the documentation cited here does not establish a current price or a universal value comparison for these services.

Know what mobile emulation does and does not prove
A screenshot at a narrow viewport tests how a page renders at that size; it does not by itself prove the experience on a physical phone. Playwright offers device parameter presets for emulation, documented in its emulation guide. Chromatic states in its mobile testing FAQ that it does not currently support iOS or Android mobile testing, although smaller viewport tests can be configured. Treat viewport checks and physical-device testing as distinct coverage.

Troubleshoot visual comparison failures
The screenshot differs on every run
Check whether the baseline and comparison are running in different environments. Operating system, browser version, browser settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode can affect rendering. Standardize the environment before updating references; Playwright describes these sources of variation in its visual comparison documentation.

A mobile layout regression is missed
Confirm that the test actually captures the width where the layout changes. A desktop screenshot or a single mobile width cannot cover responsive behavior at widths you did not capture. Add an explicit test input for the relevant breakpoint or layout transition.
A baseline update hides an unintended change
Review the changed screenshot before refreshing references. Update snapshots only after deciding the visual change is intentional; Playwright’s update-snapshots option regenerates the references used by subsequent comparisons.
A viewport check is mistaken for device testing
Label the test accurately: a configured narrow viewport or emulated device profile is not equivalent to testing on physical iOS or Android hardware. Use the coverage claim that matches the capture method.
Hosted screenshot usage grows faster than expected
For Percy, account for each configured responsive width as a separate screenshot under the documented usage model. Check the vendor’s current usage terms before increasing the number of widths or pages.

Does one mobile screenshot monitor every phone size?
No. It covers only the viewport and state captured. Add explicit widths for the responsive layouts you intend to monitor.
