To monitor a Shopify product page with Urlwatch, create a URL job for the public product page, filter the fetched content to the fields you care about, preview the filter, and schedule Urlwatch to run. Use a browser job only when the needed content appears after JavaScript runs. Urlwatch reports changes by comparing each check with its previously saved result.

What Urlwatch can—and cannot—tell you

Urlwatch checks a page and reports changes in its fetched output. For a Shopify product page, that can help you notice a change to visible text such as a price, product title, description, or availability label. The useful signal depends on selecting the right content and keeping unrelated page changes out of the diff.

This method monitors the public page you can access. Shopify’s documentation about product JSON describes data in Shopify admin; it does not establish that the same data is available from an unauthenticated public product URL or that adding a JSON path to that URL will work. See Shopify’s explanation of JSON data in the admin.

Install Urlwatch and create a product-page job

  1. Install Urlwatch using its official handbook, then run urlwatch once to initialize its state.

    Web Alert (Website Change Monitor)
    • Notification when a website of your choice changes
    • Visual difference of all modifications to a website detected (diff)
    • Choose exactly which part or parts of a page to watch
    • Check pages even behind logins, HTTP Authentications, form posts or long navigational sequences
  2. Run urlwatch --edit to open the job list, usually named urls.yaml.

  3. Add a job with a clear name and the exact public URL of the product page. The basic shape is:

    - name: Example Shopify product
      url: https://store.example/products/example-product

Replace the example URL with the real product URL. Job syntax and available keys are documented in the Urlwatch jobs reference.

  4. Save the file and run urlwatch. The first successful check establishes the saved baseline; later checks can report differences from it.

Choose how Urlwatch retrieves the page

Start with a URL job

A normal URL job fetches what the web server returns. Use it first when the desired product content is already present in that response. It is the lighter option and does not require a browser installation.

Use a browser job for JavaScript-rendered content

If the price, availability, or other needed text is inserted or changed by JavaScript after page load, use a browser job. Urlwatch’s browser job uses the navigate key and requires the optional Playwright package plus installed browser binaries. Browser retrieval uses more resources than a straightforward URL fetch. See the jobs reference for the current browser-job syntax and requirements.

Do not assume a page needs a browser just because it is a modern storefront. Check whether the target text exists in the ordinary fetched output first; choose the browser route if it does not.

Filter the diff to the product details that matter

Without a filter, changing navigation, recommendations, promotional banners, or other page furniture can produce noise. Add a CSS selector or XPath filter to extract only the relevant section. The right selector depends on the store’s actual markup; inspect the page and verify the selection rather than copying a guessed selector. Urlwatch supports chained filters and documents options such as maxitems for limiting duplicate matches in its filters reference.

For example, decide whether you need the price alone, a stock label, or the title and description as well. Select the smallest stable region that includes those fields. A selector that matches several recommendation cards or repeated prices may make the result hard to interpret.

  1. Edit the job in urls.yaml and add a CSS or XPath filter appropriate to the page’s markup, following the filter reference.

  2. Run urlwatch --test-filter to preview the current filtered plaintext.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  3. Check that the preview contains the values you intend to monitor and omits unstable page furniture.

  4. Only rely on the job after the preview is useful. Revisit the selector if the store redesigns its page or the output starts including unrelated content.

One important filter behavior: changing a filter does not refilter the previously stored content. The next comparison can be between old content processed with the former settings and new content processed with the current settings, so the first diff after a filter edit may reflect the configuration change rather than a product update. Preview the new filter before treating that diff as meaningful. More detail is in the filter documentation.

Schedule checks and send alerts

Urlwatch’s cadence is the cadence at which you invoke it. The official quick start recommends not checking more often than every 30 minutes; it shows cron scheduling and points Windows users to Task Scheduler. Use the schedule that fits how quickly you need to learn of a change, without creating unnecessary repeat requests. See the Urlwatch quick start.

  • Linux or macOS: use cron or another scheduler to run urlwatch at your chosen interval.

  • Windows: create a task in Task Scheduler to run the Urlwatch command on the desired schedule.

  • Notifications: configure a reporter if changes should reach you outside the terminal. The Urlwatch handbook describes terminal output, email, and third-party notification methods; follow the current requirements for the reporter you choose: Urlwatch handbook.

Interpret Shopify changes carefully

If you monitor visible page text, the diff tells you that the selected output changed; it does not explain why. A label may change because the store updated its page, or because of page behavior that is not a meaningful product edit.

Shopify’s admin JSON guidance says product updated_at can change when title, description, or SEO changes, but it can also change with automatic inventory updates after a purchase. Therefore, that timestamp alone is not proof of a price or editorial change. Shopify also notes that inventory_quantity is a database value that can be negative when inventory is not tracked or overselling is enabled; do not treat it as a guaranteed customer-visible stock count. These are admin-data qualifications, not a promise that a public storefront exposes those fields. See Shopify’s JSON help page.

Troubleshoot common monitoring problems

The filter preview is empty or misses the price

The selector may not match the page’s current markup, or the desired text may be added after the initial server response. Inspect the page’s actual structure, try a suitable CSS or XPath selection, and preview again. If JavaScript is responsible for the missing content, use a browser job and account for its Playwright and browser requirements.

The diff contains navigation or many irrelevant changes

Narrow the selection to a stable product-detail element rather than the whole page. Check for duplicate matches and use supported filter options such as maxitems where appropriate. Confirm the result with urlwatch --test-filter before enabling notifications.

The first diff after editing a filter looks unexpectedly large

Urlwatch does not retroactively apply the new filter to its saved prior result. A diff may compare the old filtered result with newly fetched content using the new filter. Preview and validate the filter, then interpret the transition separately from subsequent checks.

The page works in a browser but the URL job cannot see the product value

The server response may not contain content rendered later by JavaScript. Switch to a browser job using the documented navigate configuration, and verify that Playwright and its browser are installed.

You expected an admin inventory field from a public product URL

Shopify’s cited JSON guidance is about admin data and does not establish public access to admin resources. Monitor the page’s visible content unless you have a separately authorized and verified route to store data.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Urlwatch monitor a product without notifying me about unrelated page changes?

It can focus comparisons on a CSS or XPath selection, but the selection must be checked against the specific storefront and may need maintenance if its markup changes.

Can I use Urlwatch to track several Shopify products?

The documented setup uses jobs in a shared urls.yaml list; create a separately named job for each product page you want to monitor.
