Use SSH to check what is happening on the Raspberry Pi, then use YouTube Live Control Room to check what YouTube is receiving. These are separate views: a running encoder process on the Pi does not prove that YouTube is ingesting a healthy stream or that viewers can watch it.

What SSH can—and cannot—tell you

SSH (Secure Shell) gives you a remote terminal session on the Pi, so you can inspect the encoder or streaming service you actually use and read its output or logs. Raspberry Pi documents SSH as a way to access a terminal remotely: Raspberry Pi remote access.

SSH reports the Pi-side state. YouTube Live Control Room reports YouTube’s side: incoming stream health and platform messages. Check both during a broadcast; neither view replaces the other.

Enable SSH and choose a safe route to the Pi

Connect on the same network

  1. Enable SSH on Raspberry Pi OS if it is not already enabled. SSH is disabled by default; Raspberry Pi documents enabling it through setup or configuration.
  2. Find the Pi’s current local IP address using the network information available to you. The address can change, so check it again if a previously working connection stops.
  3. From a computer with an SSH client, connect using your own Pi username and address: ssh YOUR_USERNAME@PI_IP_ADDRESS. Replace both example values; there is no universal username or address.
  4. Accept the host key only if you recognize the Pi and expect this first connection. Enter the password when prompted, or use the SSH key configured for your account.

Connect when you are away from home

Your Pi’s local IP address is generally reachable only from its local network. For access from another network, use a secured route such as a VPN, a properly secured remote-access arrangement, or Raspberry Pi Connect where appropriate. Avoid exposing SSH directly to the public internet as a quick fix; it increases the Pi’s exposure and requires careful security and network configuration. See Raspberry Pi’s remote-access options.

Check the stream process over SSH

Once connected, inspect the process or service used by your installation and review its output or logs. The right command depends on how you launched the stream: a manually started encoder, a service manager, and a camera-streaming application do not necessarily use the same process name or logging method. Do not assume a command copied from another setup applies to yours.

  • Confirm that the intended encoder or streaming service is present and has not exited.
  • Read its terminal output or service logs for errors, reconnect attempts, or encoder messages.
  • If you launched it in an interactive terminal, check whether that session is still active. Closing the terminal may stop a process that was not configured to run independently.
  • Protect credentials while investigating: do not share a real stream key in a public command, screenshot, shell history, or log.

A process that appears to be running is only evidence that the Pi-side program is active. It cannot confirm successful YouTube ingestion, acceptable stream health, or viewer playback.

Raspberry SC15184 Pi 4 Model B 2019 Quad Core 64 Bit WiFi Bluetooth (2GB)
  • Broadcom BCM2711, quad-core Cortex-A72 (ARM v8) 64-bit SoC @ 1. 5GHz
  • 2. 4 GHz and 5. 0 GHz IEEE 802. 11b/g/n/ac wireless LAN, Bluetooth 5. 0, BLE
  • 2 × USB 3. 0 ports, 2 x USB 2. 0 Ports
  • 2 × micro HDMI ports supproting up to 4Kp60 video resolution
  • Micro SD card slot for loading operating system and data storage

Check YouTube’s view of the broadcast

Open YouTube Live Control Room separately while the stream is underway. Review the stream health indicator and any messages; YouTube’s encoder guidance explicitly recommends monitoring stream health and reviewing messages during the event: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

If YouTube reports instability, compare the encoder’s resolution, frame rate, and bitrate with the upload capacity available to the Pi. YouTube recommends running an upload speed test and testing with representative audio and video movement before a live event. A static image or silent test may not reveal problems that appear with real motion or audio.

Raspberry Pi 4 Model B (2GB)
  • Broadcom BCM2711, Quad core Cortex-A72 (ARM v8) 64-bit SoC @ 1.5GHz
  • 1GB, 2GB, 4GB or 8GB LPDDR4-3200 SDRAM (depending on model)
  • 2.4 GHz and 5.0 GHz IEEE 802.11ac wireless, Bluetooth 5.0, BLE Gigabit Ethernet
  • 2 USB 3.0 ports; 2 USB 2.0 ports.
  • Raspberry Pi standard 40 pin GPIO header (fully backwards compatible with previous boards)

Published H.264 bitrate examples

YouTube’s H.264 recommendations, accessed in 2026, include these encoder settings. They are not measurements of Pi bandwidth, guarantees for a particular connection, or universal requirements; the table varies with resolution, frame rate, and codec.

Resolution and frame rate YouTube H.264 recommended bitrate
720p at 30 fps 8 Mbps
720p at 60 fps 8 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 14 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 17 Mbps

Use the recommendation appropriate to your chosen resolution, frame rate, and codec, then make sure the Pi’s upload connection can sustain the stream. Lowering output settings may help where upload capacity is limited.

Verify the YouTube connection and protect the stream key

YouTube recommends RTMPS, which transports RTMP over TLS/SSL. Get the RTMPS server URL and stream key from Live Control Room, and confirm that your encoder supports RTMPS. Do not substitute a guessed URL or assume the ordinary RTMP address is correct. Keep the key private: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a stream to your channel.

If ingestion fails, check that the URL and key in the encoder match the current Live Control Room details and that the encoder is configured for RTMPS. YouTube documents port 443 as a troubleshooting option when an SSL connection error persists; follow the URL and encoder requirements for your actual setup rather than changing ports without checking compatibility. See YouTube’s RTMPS and encoder guidance.

If your Pi streams from a Raspberry Pi camera

For camera-based setups, Raspberry Pi documents network-streaming options for rpicam-vid; that does not mean every YouTube stream uses this tool. Consult the Raspberry Pi camera software documentation for the options matching your camera and deployment.

Raspberry Pi 5 uses software video encoders. Its --low-latency option trades some coding efficiency and potentially maximum frame rate for lower encoding latency. Consider it only when that trade-off fits your use case; it is not a general requirement for streaming or a fix for an unhealthy network connection.

Troubleshoot common remote-monitoring problems

Symptom What to check
SSH cannot reach the Pi Confirm SSH is enabled, both devices have a route to each other, and the address is the Pi’s current IP. From outside the home network, use a secured remote route rather than assuming the local address is reachable.
The encoder process is missing or has stopped Check how the stream was launched and inspect that process or service’s own output and logs. A process name or command from a different setup may not apply.
The Pi process is running, but YouTube shows no healthy incoming stream Use Live Control Room to check its messages and stream health. Verify the configured RTMPS URL and key, and confirm that the encoder supports RTMPS.
YouTube reports an SSL connection error Verify the RTMPS configuration and encoder requirements. YouTube lists port 443 as a troubleshooting option when the SSL error persists; check that it is appropriate for the actual encoder and connection.
Stream health is unstable Compare resolution, frame rate, and bitrate with available upload capacity. Run an upload speed test and retest with representative audio and moving video.
A real stream key appears in a screenshot, command history, or shared log Treat it as exposed. Remove the disclosure and replace or reset the key through YouTube’s live-stream settings, then update the encoder configuration.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is to keep uploaded video playing on YouTube around the clock rather than monitor a camera or an existing Pi setup, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos to YouTube; it does not stream from a camera.
