For ordinary alerts, open the public channel’s t.me link in Telegram, join it, and enable notifications for the channel. For custom monitoring, use a Bot API bot only if it can join the channel; a developer who needs client-level access to public-channel updates can instead build a logged-in MTProto/TDLib client, which requires ongoing polling and recovery logic.

Choose the right monitoring method

Method Best for Access needed Trade-off
Join in Telegram Following a channel as a person A Telegram account and the public channel link No custom code; alerts depend on Telegram and device notification settings.
Bot API A bot or automated workflow that processes posts The bot must be a member of the channel Use long polling or a webhook; a public link alone does not let an arbitrary bot read the channel.
MTProto/TDLib client A developer implementing client-level monitoring A logged-in user session and custom software Telegram documents passive updates for public channels, but the client must keep polling for differences and recover gaps.

Follow a channel without code

  1. Open the channel’s public t.me link in Telegram.
  2. Join or subscribe to the channel. Telegram says subscribers can view the channel’s message history after joining.
  3. If new-post alerts do not appear, check the channel’s notification controls in Telegram and your operating system’s notification permission. The exact menu labels and behavior vary by client and device.

Telegram’s explanation of public links and channel history is in its Channels FAQ. You do not need to buy a separate device or product to follow a channel this way.

Monitor posts with the Bot API

This route fits a custom workflow when the channel can add your bot. Telegram’s Bots FAQ says bots receive messages from channels where they are members, so public visibility does not by itself grant a bot access. Ask a channel owner or administrator to add the bot if you do not control membership.

Choose one update-delivery method

The Bot API provides channel_post updates for new channel posts and edited_channel_post updates for edits. Handle both if your downstream process must reflect corrections as well as initial posts.

Receive updates using either getUpdates long polling or a webhook. Telegram does not allow both methods at the same time for the same bot. Long polling returns the earliest unconfirmed updates; advance the offset to confirm updates after processing them. For a webhook, configure the endpoint to accept and process incoming updates.

Make processing resilient

  • Persist processed update identifiers and deduplicate them, so retries do not trigger repeated downstream actions.
  • For long polling, confirm updates with the appropriate offset only after handling them.
  • Log failures and make processing idempotent, so a retry can safely run without duplicating effects.

Telegram documents update types and delivery options in the Bot API and explains confirmation and polling behavior in the Bots FAQ. These safeguards reduce common processing errors; Telegram does not promise a particular delivery rate or latency.

Use MTProto or TDLib for client-level monitoring

If the monitor needs the client API’s documented behavior for public channels that the logged-in session has not joined, use a custom MTProto client or a library built for Telegram’s client API. Telegram’s Working with Updates documentation describes passive updates for public channels, but this is an implementation path—not a ready-made Telegram notification setting.

Keep the update state current

The client must continue calling updates.getChannelDifference at the returned timeout, or use the documented fallback interval. Telegram describes a limit of 10 channels or supergroups under the specified short-polling mechanism, so do not treat passive reception as an unlimited background feed.

Persist the latest handled state and account for repeated updates, edits, and failures. Telegram warns that sufficiently old state may no longer be recoverable through the normal difference method. In that case, the client needs to fetch fresh state and fill gaps where possible; periodically reconciling recent messages can help when the API permits it. The documentation does not guarantee that every gap can be reconstructed.

For developers sorting out Telegram entity terminology, Telethon’s Chats vs Channels guide distinguishes broadcast channels from groups and supergroups. It is terminology guidance, not a guarantee of a particular monitoring setup.

What you need to run a custom monitor

A bot or MTProto monitor requires software and an appropriate Telegram access method. Hosting is a deployment choice for a custom service, not a requirement for following a channel in Telegram. Telegram’s Bot Platform Developer Terms say third-party bot products are hosted on their developers’ own servers and that Telegram is unaffiliated with third-party products unless otherwise stated.
