To monitor a Hindi web page with Urlwatch, add it as a URL job, filter the fetched page down to the Hindi content you care about, preview the result, then run Urlwatch on a schedule and configure a reporter. Hindi text does not automatically require an encoding override: add encoding: utf-8 only if the output is garbled and UTF-8 is correct for that page. If the content appears only after JavaScript runs, use a browser job instead of an ordinary URL job.
How Urlwatch monitors a page
Urlwatch retrieves pages, compares their content with earlier checks, and reports changes as a unified diff with the changed URL. Its handbook describes the tool as intended to watch webpage changes and notify users by email, in the terminal, or through third-party services.
The important setup choice is what Urlwatch compares. A whole page can change because of navigation, ads, timestamps, or other elements unrelated to the Hindi text you want to track. Filters let you select and normalize the relevant content before comparison.

- Install Urlwatch by following its current handbook instructions, then complete its quick start.
- Run
urlwatch --editto open the job list. - Add a URL job for the page you want to monitor. Replace the example URL in the configuration below with the exact address.
- Save the job and proceed to filter preview before relying on notifications.
Filter the page to the Hindi content that matters
This is a starting configuration, not a verified selector for any particular Hindi site. Inspect the page’s HTML and replace main with a selector that matches the actual content. If there is no suitable CSS selector, use an XPath filter appropriate to the page structure. The Urlwatch filter reference also supports handling duplicate matches and sorting results; do not sort if the order of the content matters.
#1 Best Overall
- Notification when a website of your choice changes
- Visual difference of all modifications to a website detected (diff)
- Choose exactly which part or parts of a page to watch
- Check pages even behind logins, HTTP Authentications, form posts or long navigational sequences
name: Hindi page changes
url: https://example.org/page
filter:
- css:
selector: main
- html2text
- strip
The pipeline selects the matching element, converts its HTML to text, and strips surrounding whitespace. Add or change filters only to remove noise or isolate the content you want compared. Avoid guessing a selector: the right choice depends on the target page’s markup.
Check Hindi text decoding
Hindi is Unicode text, but that fact alone does not mean a page needs a manual encoding setting. First inspect Urlwatch’s output. If the Hindi characters appear garbled because the response is decoded incorrectly, and UTF-8 is the page’s correct encoding, add this job setting:
encoding: utf-8
Keep the override only if it fixes the output. It is not a universal requirement for Hindi pages, and the exact page’s response headers and encoding determine whether it is appropriate.

| What you observe | Job to use | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| The needed text is present in the response fetched by Urlwatch. | Ordinary URL job | Apply a CSS or XPath selector and text filters, then preview the result. |
| A browser shows the text, but the ordinary URL job does not retrieve it. | Browser job | Configure a browser job and choose a suitable wait_until condition for when the page is considered loaded. |
Whether JavaScript rendering is necessary depends on the site. Compare the ordinary job’s output with what the browser displays before switching job types; a browser job cannot compensate for a selector that does not match the page.
Preview the filtered output before scheduling
- Run
urlwatch --test-filterfor the configured job. - Check that the preview contains the intended Hindi text, with characters rendered correctly.
- Confirm that navigation, repeated elements, and other changing page furniture have been excluded if they are not relevant.
- Adjust the selector or filters and preview again until the output represents the change you want to detect.
Filter changes apply to newly retrieved content; they do not automatically re-filter historical snapshots. After changing a filter, use the new preview to verify future comparisons rather than expecting old snapshots to be reconstructed.
Schedule checks and choose notifications
Urlwatch checks when it is run, so scheduling is up to you. The quick-start guidance recommends not running checks more frequently than every 30 minutes. Choose a less frequent interval if it meets your needs and is more appropriate for the site. Configure a reporter for the destination you want; the handbook lists terminal output, email, and third-party reporter options.
A schedule and a reporter solve different problems: the schedule determines when Urlwatch checks, while the reporter determines where change notifications go. Confirm both are configured for the environment where Urlwatch will run.
Or skip the browser setup:
ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API, not a replacement for Urlwatch’s change comparison or scheduling. It can capture a page when you need a visual snapshot without setting up a browser locally. Its clean-shot options accept cookie or consent banners and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses identify page verdict and billing status in headers. It also has an MCP server with screenshot tools for AI agents.
For example, this cURL request saves a screenshot of the target page as WebP; see the ScreenshotNeo documentation for request options and API details:

- Hindi characters look wrong: Check the filter preview. If the page is being decoded incorrectly and UTF-8 is correct, set
encoding: utf-8; remove the override if it does not correct the output. - The browser shows content that Urlwatch misses: Check whether the content is inserted by JavaScript. If so, switch to a browser job and configure an appropriate
wait_untilcondition. - Every check reports changes: Inspect the filtered preview for navigation, timestamps, or other dynamic elements. Narrow the selector or add text filters so the comparison focuses on relevant content.
- The filter returns nothing or the wrong text: Re-examine the page’s markup and replace the example selector with one that actually matches the desired content. Do not assume every site uses a
mainelement. - Notifications do not arrive: Confirm that Urlwatch is being run on schedule and that a reporter is configured for the intended destination.
FAQ
Does a Hindi page always need encoding: utf-8?
No. Use it only when the observed output is incorrectly decoded and UTF-8 matches the page.
Will changing a filter update old comparisons?
No. Filter changes do not retroactively re-filter historical snapshots.
