Monitor a deployed smart contract by watching its events and transactions for behavior that is unusual for that contract, then route meaningful alerts to an accountable operator with a rehearsed response. Monitoring improves visibility; it does not make immutable code safe, prove that an exploit is underway, or guarantee that a team can stop one.
Start with the risks this contract actually has
Before choosing an alerting product, identify what could be lost or changed and who has the authority to do it. Map assets at risk, privileged roles, important invariants, and functions that move value or alter access. For each important function or event, define expected behavior and what would be unusual.
- An unexpected call by an owner, administrator, or other privileged role.
- A withdrawal, transfer, or mint that exceeds the contract’s normal range or occurs at an unexpected rate.
- A sudden increase in transaction volume or function-call frequency.
- Repeated failed transactions or unusual calls to sensitive functions.
- An ownership change, pause, or other access-control change that was not planned.
Ethereum.org recommends logging safety-critical actions and gives transaction volume, function-call frequency, called functions, and withdrawal amounts as monitoring examples: Ethereum.org’s smart-contract security guidance. Set thresholds from the contract’s expected behavior and risk. A generic threshold copied from another protocol can either miss meaningful activity or generate too many alerts.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesEmit and observe useful signals
Instrument safety-critical actions with events
Contracts should emit events for actions that off-chain systems and operators need to observe, such as privileged changes or significant value movement. An event gives monitoring systems a structured signal to filter and alert on. Decide which actions matter before deployment when possible; if the contract is already deployed, confirm what it actually emits rather than assuming the desired event exists.

Watch transactions as well as events
An event-only monitor can miss behavior if the relevant action was not instrumented as expected. Where the platform allows it, monitor transaction properties and function calls alongside event data. OpenZeppelin Monitor uses a contract’s ABI and can apply conditions to transaction parameters, filters, or events: OpenZeppelin Monitor documentation. Check that the ABI describes the deployed contract and represents its proxy or upgrade setup correctly; a mismatch can make monitoring incomplete or misleading.
Choose an approach that fits your operation
| Approach | What it can do | What to evaluate |
|---|---|---|
| Contract-specific event and transaction rules | Alert on named events, functions, values, or transaction patterns. | ABI accuracy, condition options, supported chain, alert timing, confirmation depth, and notification controls. Ethereum.org describes event-based visibility, and OpenZeppelin documents configurable monitors: Ethereum.org; OpenZeppelin Monitor. |
| Detection bots and threat feeds | Look for known patterns or combine signals into a broader alert. Forta documents bots for suspicious contract creation, known exploiter addresses, anomalous transfers or volume, and monitored functions or events. | Bot and chain coverage, transparency, false-positive handling, and whether alerts are available through the app, API, or integration you need: Forta documentation; Forta bot documentation. |
| Managed platform monitoring | Configure monitors, route notifications to operations tools, and in some setups connect alerts to actions. | Network support, ABI and internal-call limits, notification destinations, repeated-alert controls, product status, and safeguards for any automated action: OpenZeppelin Monitor; Defender Monitor documentation. |
| Enterprise threat monitoring | Potentially add specialized threat intelligence or market and exploit monitoring. | Whether the service covers your protocol and chain, fits your operations, integrates with your response process, and meets procurement needs. Chainalysis discusses Hexagate in the context of stablecoin programs, but the cited material does not establish general availability or pricing: Chainalysis on stablecoin security. |
Forta’s Attack Detector combines alerts across funding, preparation, exploitation, and post-exploitation or money-laundering stages. Forta cautions that underlying alerts can have low precision, so treat a signal as a reason to investigate, not as confirmation of an attack: Forta Attack Detector documentation.
Configure alerts so operators can act on them
Separate risks and set severity
Create distinct monitors for different risks. A high-severity privileged action should not disappear in a stream of routine transfers. OpenZeppelin groups monitors into governance, access control, suspicious activity, financial, and technical categories, and documents severity labels and notification thresholds: OpenZeppelin Monitor documentation.

Choose confirmation depth deliberately
Fewer confirmations can shorten the delay before an alert but leave more exposure to a chain reorganization; waiting for more confirmations can increase confidence that the transaction will remain accepted while delaying the signal. Select a depth appropriate to the chain, the risk, and the action the alert will trigger, and document why that setting is suitable.
Control repeated notifications
Alert volume can make people ignore the channel that matters. Group signals by severity, set thresholds and minimum intervals where supported, and review false positives so rules remain useful. OpenZeppelin documents controls for repeated notifications: OpenZeppelin Monitor documentation.
Route each alert to an owner and a response
An alert without an owner is only a message. Send it where an on-call person will see it, and define who validates the signal, who escalates it, and who has authority to pause or upgrade the contract. OpenZeppelin lists integrations including Slack, Telegram, Discord, email, PagerDuty, Opsgenie, and custom APIs: OpenZeppelin Monitor documentation. Forta describes access through its app and API and integration through Defender Forta Sentinels: Forta Sentinels documentation.

Use automation cautiously
Forta documents a Sentinel triggering a Defender Autotask that can call a contract method such as pause(): Forta Sentinels documentation. An automated pause can reduce response delay, but a detector can fire incorrectly and a pause can disrupt legitimate use. Test the integration, permissions, and recovery path before enabling it in production, and keep a human escalation path.

OpenZeppelin Monitor and Defender
OpenZeppelin’s documentation says Defender is in maintenance mode and recommends migrating monitoring to OpenZeppelin Monitor. Its Monitor documentation states support across networks except Fantom, while internal function-call tracking is currently limited to Ethereum mainnet: OpenZeppelin Monitor documentation; Defender Monitor documentation. Verify the current documentation against the exact chain and contract you intend to monitor, especially if your detection depends on internal calls.

Forta and Tenderly
Forta’s curated bridge and stablecoin kits include examples such as anomalous token transfers, anomalous volume, interactions with known exploiter addresses, suspicious contract creation, and privileged event or function monitoring. These examples do not guarantee coverage for a particular deployment: Forta bot kits documentation. Ethereum.org also names Tenderly Real-Time Alerting for notifications about unusual or unexpected activity on contracts and wallets: Ethereum.org’s smart-contract security guidance. Check current product documentation for the network coverage and plan details relevant to your use case.
Understand what monitoring cannot do
- It does not prevent an exploit by itself. Whether a team can intervene depends on the contract’s controls, authorized signers, operational readiness, and the time available.
- It cannot observe everything. Coverage depends on the rules, ABI correctness, bot coverage, chain support, and delivery of alerts.
- A signal is not proof. Detectors can produce false positives; verify context before treating an alert as an incident.
- Immutability can limit recovery. Ethereum.org notes that deployed code usually cannot be changed to patch flaws and that stolen assets are difficult to recover: Ethereum.org’s smart-contract security guidance.
Ethereum.org’s undated security page gives an estimate of more than $1 billion in value stolen or lost due to smart-contract security defects and notes that estimates vary. It is not a current annual loss figure or a precisely audited total: Ethereum.org’s smart-contract security guidance.
