You can check a running YouTube stream remotely in YouTube Studio, or build an automated check with the YouTube Live Streaming API. Studio shows stream status and health; the API exposes whether YouTube is receiving the encoder feed and related health details. The sources reviewed do not establish configurable YouTube push or email alerts when that feed stops, so don’t rely on an alert unless you have independently verified one.
Choose what you need to monitor
“Is the stream running?” can mean two different things: whether YouTube is receiving data from your encoder, or whether viewers can see working public playback. Those signals are related, but they are not interchangeable. A public watch page being reachable does not by itself prove healthy encoder ingest.
- Remote status check: A person checks YouTube Studio on a phone or another device.
- Automated ingest check: A program reads stream status and health from YouTube’s Live Streaming API.
- Viewer playback check: A separate check confirms that the public stream is visible and moving. This complements ingest monitoring; the official sources cited here do not prescribe a particular third-party playback monitor.
Check stream health in YouTube Studio
YouTube’s Live Control Room displays stream status and health information while a live stream is running, including specific error information. From a remote device, open YouTube Studio, select the live stream, and inspect its status and stream-health details. The exact controls available can vary by device; YouTube documents live stream metrics in its Android Studio app guidance, but that does not establish that every desktop Live Control Room control is available on mobile.

- Install or open the YouTube Studio app on an Android phone signed in to the channel account.
- Open the live stream and review the available live metrics and status.
- If the stream reports a problem, use the Live Control Room’s health and error details to investigate the encoder or ingest issue.
This is a practical way to check in periodically using a phone you already have. It is a manual check, not proof that the phone will notify you when the stream fails.

Build an automated ingest check with the API
For a technical operator, the YouTube Live Streaming API exposes status and health fields on a liveStream resource. You can have a checker query the relevant stream and evaluate the returned fields, then connect that checker to a notification system you operate. The API provides data; its documentation is not a turnkey alert service.
Interpret the returned values

The API documentation defines active as “the user is receiving data via the stream.” That is an ingest definition, not a guarantee that public playback is visible or that viewers can hear or see the stream as intended.

Plan for the monitor to fail, too
An automated checker only helps if its own dependencies remain available. Account for the monitoring host, network connection, API credentials, and the service that delivers notifications. A failed checker or notification path can leave you unaware of a stream problem, so distinguish “no alert” from “confirmed healthy.”
Understand what YouTube alerts and preview do—and don’t—establish
YouTube’s documented tools provide status dashboards and API health data. The official pages cited here do not establish configurable mobile push or email alerts for an encoder interruption. Treat alert availability as unverified unless YouTube documents it for your account and setup; do not assume that Studio will email you when ingest stops.

YouTube’s private monitor stream is for the broadcaster to preview or test content. The YouTube Live Streaming API overview distinguishes that monitor from the broadcast stream viewers see; it does not describe the monitor stream as an unattended remote-alert service.
Third-party monitoring: verify the whole setup
A Grafana community dashboard listing describes a YouTube stream-status and outage-tracking setup involving Prometheus and a YouTube exporter. This is a configurable third-party stack, not an official YouTube feature. It implies setup and maintenance; the listing alone does not establish that a particular implementation is ready to send phone alerts.

Before adopting any monitoring stack, check what it measures (encoder ingest, public playback, or both), what must stay online, how credentials are stored, and which alert channels are actually configured. Test the notification path rather than assuming a dashboard will contact you.
