Use three checks, not one: YouTube’s Live Control Room or Live Streaming API for YouTube’s view of the incoming stream, VPS monitoring for the encoder and host, and an occasional check of the public watch page for actual playback. Send alerts from your monitoring setup to a phone notification app, then test that they arrive. A running process or an “active” YouTube status alone does not prove that every viewer can watch and hear the stream correctly.
What to monitor—and what each check can tell you
A reliable monitoring setup separates three questions. Each needs its own signal because a failure can occur at one layer while another still appears healthy.

Use these signals together and correlate their timestamps. A process can remain present without advancing useful work; a healthy server does not prove YouTube is receiving data.
Check YouTube’s view of the stream
Live Control Room
YouTube’s Live Control Room shows stream health and real-time metrics while a stream is running. Use the stream’s Live Control Room to see YouTube’s reported status and any specific errors or instructions. This is the operator-facing view of the incoming stream, not a substitute for checking the VPS or public playback.

Live Streaming API
For automated monitoring, the YouTube Live Streaming API exposes status fields on a liveStream resource. Its status.streamStatus values include active, created, error, inactive and ready. YouTube describes active as indicating that its servers are receiving data from the encoder correctly.
The separate status.healthStatus reports overall health and configuration issues. Documented health values include good, ok, bad and noData; issue records can include a type, severity, reason and description. Treat these as distinct signals: a stream configured or marked ready is not necessarily active, and noData means YouTube has no health information at that moment—not proof that the VPS is down. Inspect the detailed status and compare its timing with encoder and VPS logs.

Monitor the VPS and encoder separately
Configure checks for the signals relevant to your encoder and deployment. For an FFmpeg or similar setup, useful checks include:
- Process state and exits: whether the encoder is running, its exit code and restart history.
- Progress: whether encoded output or a progress timestamp continues to advance. A process that exists but is stuck should not count as healthy.
- Host resources: CPU, memory and disk space, plus sustained resource pressure that could affect your encoder.
- Outbound connectivity: whether the VPS can continue sending data and whether network errors appear in the encoder logs.
- YouTube status: the ingest status and health fields, if you have configured an API-based check.
For a small deployment, start with tools you already have: a service manager or process watchdog for restarts, a progress signal or log timestamp for a stalled encoder, and a monitor that can alert when a check fails. A watchdog may restart a failed process, but it cannot by itself confirm successful YouTube ingest or viewer playback.

If your stack already uses Prometheus and Grafana, a community-contributed YouTube dashboard is another possible starting point. The example calls for a YouTube exporter and API key. Check that the exporter, its permissions and the dashboard are maintained and compatible before depending on them; a community dashboard is not an official YouTube product or a guarantee of coverage.
Send VPS and stream alerts to your phone
One documented route is Uptime Kuma for monitoring and ntfy for phone notifications. ntfy documents Android and iOS apps, and its Uptime Kuma integration uses a topic, server URL and priority. The exact screens can change, so use the current project instructions for the labels and connection details.

- Create monitors for separate failure signals. Include encoder process or progress, host or connectivity, and a YouTube-side status check if you have configured one.
- Configure a notification route. In Uptime Kuma, add the documented ntfy notification and provide its topic, server URL and priority.
- Send a test notification. Confirm it arrives on your phone over the network you normally use.
- Apply the notification to the relevant monitors. Deliberately verify that a monitor state change triggers an alert.
- Include diagnostic context. Make the notification identify which check failed and when, and point you to the relevant logs or dashboard.
On Android, ntfy documents priority-based behavior: default priority or higher can make a sound or vibrate, while high or urgent priority can appear as a pop-over. Device and app notification settings affect what you see, so allow notifications and check those settings on your phone. The documentation does not promise identical presentation on every device.

An alert reports a configured check’s state change; it does not necessarily fix the stream. Keep the monitoring dashboard reachable from your phone so you can investigate. Test the delivery path rather than assuming that a saved notification configuration will reach you.

Check what viewers can actually play
When playback matters, open the public YouTube watch page from a phone and check that the stream plays with both video and audio. YouTube’s ingest status and your server checks answer different questions; neither is a complete test of the public viewing experience. A spot check can reveal a playback problem, but it does not guarantee future availability or show what every viewer’s device and connection will experience.
