To monitor a 24/7 YouTube live stream automatically, poll the YouTube Live Streaming API for the stream’s status.streamStatus and status.healthStatus, then apply your own alert rules and notification route. Check the associated broadcast separately: a stream is the incoming video feed, while a broadcast is the event viewers watch. YouTube’s Live Control Room helps with manual diagnosis, but its documented metrics display is not evidence of a custom unattended alert service.
What an automatic monitor should check
A useful monitor does more than ask whether a channel appears live. YouTube represents a live stream and its broadcast as different resources, with different states. The LiveStreams API reference defines stream status and health fields; the LiveBroadcasts API reference documents the broadcast lifecycle.
- Stream status: whether YouTube is receiving the incoming feed and whether the stream is in an error or other state.
- Stream health: whether YouTube has identified configuration issues, including issues involving bitrate, frame rate, audio, or video ingestion.
- Broadcast status: the lifecycle of the viewer-facing event. This is not a substitute for checking incoming stream health.
Google defines active as the state in which “the user is receiving data via the stream.” That confirms data is reaching YouTube; it does not by itself establish that the feed is healthy or that the broadcast is in the expected lifecycle state.

The API’s health status can include issue records with severity, reason, and description. Preserve and report those details rather than converting every problem into a generic offline alert.

The LiveStreams API reference also describes lastUpdateTimeSeconds and configuration issues. Consider those fields alongside the current status so the alert can convey what changed and what YouTube reported.
Build an API-based monitoring workflow
- Authorize access to the channel’s live resources. Use the account and authorization context that can access the channel’s YouTube Live resources. YouTube’s API method documentation lists authorization and access errors;
liveStreamingNotEnabledmay apply when live streaming is not enabled for the account. See LiveStreams: list. - Identify the stream associated with the ongoing broadcast. Keep the stream resource and the broadcast resource distinct. The YouTube Live Streaming API overview explains the difference: the stream is the feed, and the broadcast is the event.
- Request stream status. Call
liveStreams.listwith the appropriate resource identifier and request thestatuspart. Confirm that the authorized account can retrieve the intended channel resource. - Evaluate status and health together. Check
status.streamStatus,status.healthStatus,lastUpdateTimeSeconds, and anyconfigurationIssues. An active stream can still have degraded health;noDatameans health is unknown, not good. - Define your own alert policy. For example, alert on an unexpected inactive or error state, bad health, or health information that remains unavailable beyond a tolerance you choose. Retry or require a persistent condition before paging so one transient observation does not automatically become an incident.
- Log and notify. Store timestamped observations and relevant issue fields, then route notifications through an email, messaging, or incident system you operate. Include the stream identity, status, health, and issue description so a recipient can begin diagnosis.
- Check the broadcast lifecycle separately. Inspect the relevant
liveBroadcaststatus and settings when the event lifecycle matters. Settings such asenableAutoStartandenableAutoStopaffect broadcast behavior, but do not replace checks of the incoming stream’s health.
YouTube provides the machine-readable signals, not a prescribed polling interval, outage threshold, notification channel, or escalation path. Choose those to fit the stream’s availability needs and the load and operational constraints of your implementation.

Choose between a dashboard and unattended alerts
YouTube Help’s Live Control Room metrics guidance describes stream health and status messages, along with real-time metrics such as concurrent viewers and duration while streaming. It is useful when an operator is watching the dashboard. The reviewed documentation does not establish that Live Control Room sends custom alerts unattended.

API polling is the relevant approach for unattended detection because it exposes machine-readable status and health fields. It also means you must maintain authorization, a recurring process or scheduler, alert delivery, and your own thresholds. When assessing an implementation, consider whether it covers both resources, distinguishes warning, error, and unknown states, manages credentials safely, logs changes, and controls any recovery actions. No particular third-party monitoring service is established here as the preferred option.

Keep monitoring separate from recovery
An alert tells you that a condition needs attention; it does not safely restart an encoder or repair a YouTube broadcast by itself. The API overview describes authorized broadcast management operations, but the status documentation does not establish a specific safe restart procedure for OBS or another encoder.
If you choose to automate encoder recovery, use a controlled service supervisor or equivalent mechanism, log each attempt, cap retries, and notify a person if recovery fails. Treat restarting the encoder and changing broadcast state as separate actions, and verify the stream and broadcast statuses after any intervention.
