To check a lecture stream on your phone, open its YouTube watch page and confirm the picture and sound are playing. If you manage the channel, use YouTube’s live dashboard for stream status and the YouTube Studio app for stream analytics. These are different workflows: a viewer’s “Notify me” option is for a scheduled stream going live, not an alert that an active stream has stopped.

Choose the right monitoring method

Your role What you can check Where to check
Viewer of another channel’s lecture Whether the video and audio are currently playing; a notification when a scheduled stream begins YouTube watch page
Channel owner or manager Stream status and available audience or engagement metrics for your own broadcast YouTube live dashboard or YouTube Studio

YouTube’s creator-side status and analytics tools are not viewer-facing stream-health reports. The official guidance cited here does not document a way for viewers to receive an alert if another channel’s existing 24/7 stream fails.

Check another channel’s lecture stream

  1. Open the lecture’s watch page in the YouTube app or a mobile browser.
  2. If the stream is scheduled and has not started, select Notify me on its watch page. YouTube describes notifications for a live stream or Premiere going live; this is a start notification, not a documented failure alarm. See YouTube’s guidance on live-stream notifications.
  3. To check an ongoing lecture, watch it and periodically confirm that both picture and sound are present. A loading page, frozen picture, or missing audio can indicate playback trouble, but the viewer guidance does not provide a separate broadcaster-encoder health control.

Do not assume a phone will play a stream indefinitely with its screen locked. YouTube’s cited guidance does not guarantee uninterrupted overnight mobile playback.

Check a stream on your own channel

Use the live dashboard for stream status

  1. Open your channel’s live-stream dashboard or Live Control Room.
  2. Check Stream status. YouTube describes this as the health of the stream being sent from a mobile device; it may show specific error messages with instructions. See YouTube’s mobile live-stream metrics guidance.
  3. Review the metrics available for your setup, such as concurrent viewers, duration, and selected chat or like activity. The exact metrics depend in part on whether you are streaming from a phone or an encoder.

Use the YouTube Studio app for stream analytics

  1. Open the YouTube Studio app.
  2. Tap Content, then the Live tab.
  3. Select the stream and open its Analytics card. YouTube documents this route on iPhone and iPad for viewing a stream’s concurrent-viewer report. Post-stream metrics may appear within minutes after the stream ends. See YouTube’s analytics guidance.

These screens help a channel owner inspect the broadcast and its metrics; they do not turn a viewer’s phone into a guaranteed, around-the-clock alarm system.

If you are broadcasting from the phone itself

Monitoring is different from starting a mobile broadcast. YouTube’s mobile live-stream eligibility requirements and the available setup options can change, so check YouTube’s current mobile live-streaming requirements before relying on a phone as the source. YouTube’s mobile workflow includes starting the broadcast in the YouTube app; after finishing, the creator sees a recap and an archive is created.

For any broadcast, YouTube Help advises creators to “Continuously monitor streams for audio and video quality.” It also recommends trying a test stream. A phone may help you make periodic checks, but that guidance does not promise uninterrupted overnight playback or a failure alert on a viewer’s device. See YouTube’s live-streaming tips.

Troubleshoot common monitoring problems

  • The stream will not play or keeps buffering: Check whether other YouTube videos load on the phone, then reopen the watch page or app. A viewer’s playback issue does not establish that the broadcaster’s encoder has failed.
  • You expected an alert when the lecture stopped: “Notify me” is for a scheduled stream or Premiere going live. The cited YouTube guidance does not describe it as an alert for an existing stream ending or failing.
  • You cannot find creator stream status: The status guidance applies to a channel’s own stream. Open the live dashboard or Live Control Room for the channel that is broadcasting; a viewer cannot use another channel’s creator metrics.
  • A metric is missing or differs from what you expect: Available metrics vary with the streaming method. Check the dashboard for stream status and use Studio’s Live content analytics route for the stream-level information YouTube makes available.
  • Picture or sound quality is uncertain: Check both directly and consider a test stream before relying on a broadcast. YouTube recommends monitoring both audio and video quality.
