These APIs update session history; they do not render your single-page app for you.
How the History API fits into a single-page app
The browser keeps session history for the current tab or frame. In a client-side application, intercepting a link and rendering a new view without loading a new document means your code must keep three things aligned: the address bar, the rendered view, and the browser’s history entries. The History API lets you add or update entries and traverse them; your application remains responsible for rendering the view that corresponds to the current URL and state.
The practical distinction is: use pushState for a new Back-button stop, replaceState to change the current stop, and popstate to respond when traversal makes another entry active.
How to change the URL without reloading the page
Call history.pushState(state, "", url) when a user action creates a distinct destination that should be reachable with Back and Forward. The URL must be valid and same-origin, and the state must be serializable. The call updates the address bar and adds a same-document history entry, but it does not fetch or load that URL at that moment. Your app must render the destination itself.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
A minimal illustrative pattern is:
function navigate(url, viewState) {
history.pushState(viewState, "", url);
renderFromUrlAndState(location, viewState);
}
window.addEventListener("popstate", (event) => {
renderFromUrlAndState(location, event.state);
});
This is a sketch, not a complete router. A production implementation needs route parsing, state validation, loading and error handling, and deliberate scroll and focus behavior. Also configure the server so a deep URL can serve the app if someone reloads it or opens it directly later: a successful pushState call does not prove the server can handle that route.
Calling pushState does not fire hashchange, even when the only URL difference is the fragment. Do not rely on that event to update the view after a History API call. See MDN’s pushState() reference.

When to use replaceState instead
Call history.replaceState(state, "", url) when the current entry should change without adding another Back-button stop. Typical uses include normalizing a URL, correcting a transient route, or attaching app restoration data to the initial document entry. It updates the current entry; it does not load the supplied URL. Its URL, state serialization, active-document, and call-frequency constraints are similar to those for pushState. See MDN’s replaceState() reference.
Choose based on the navigation meaning, not merely on how the URL changes. A meaningful user-visible destination usually deserves a new entry; frequent refinements or canonicalization may be better as replacements if each change should not become a separate Back step.

How to make Back and Forward restore the right view
Listen for popstate to synchronize the UI when the active entry changes through Back, Forward, or history.go(). The event’s state property contains the state associated with the newly active entry. Resolve that state together with the current URL, then render the corresponding view. State may be null, including when the entry predates app initialization, so the URL should provide a fallback.
Do not expect popstate to announce your own call to pushState or replaceState. When your app initiates navigation, update the view in that navigation operation; use the event handler for later traversal. MDN documents this behavior in its popstate event reference.

Seed the initial entry when restoration needs it
The initial document entry may not contain application state. If your app relies on entry state to restore a view after an in-app navigation and a subsequent Back action, initialize the current entry with replaceState during startup. The MDN SPA guide calls out this startup case. Your restoration logic should still tolerate missing, null, or outdated state.
Traversal methods and history length
history.back(), history.forward(), and history.go() request traversal. A request beyond the available range silently does nothing; history.go(0) reloads the current page. history.length reports the number of entries, not their URLs. The History interface reference describes these methods and properties.

Designing history behavior for a complex application
- Put shareable route identity in the URL. Include bookmarkable destinations and user-visible filters in the URL where appropriate. Keep the state object focused on compact, serializable restoration data; browsers may persist state and impose implementation limits. MDN recommends session storage or local storage when more space is needed.
- Validate state and provide a fallback. State can be null or stale, so parse the current URL and validate any stored values before using them to render.
- Respect browser controls. Ordinary page script cannot inspect, erase, or disable the user’s full session history.
location.replace()is a separate document-navigation option that replaces the current page in the path; it is not a way to clear the history stack. See MDN’s window.history reference. - Make scroll and focus part of navigation design.
history.scrollRestorationcan be"auto"or"manual". If the app takes manual control, coordinate scroll restoration with accessible focus behavior; there is no universal policy that fits every interface. - Handle API failures. Invalid or cross-origin URLs, nonserializable state, an inactive document, and overly frequent calls can cause exceptions. Keep inputs compact and valid, and handle failures when the application cannot safely assume that they are.
Should you use the Navigation API?
MDN describes the Navigation API as a newer successor to earlier navigation features, intended in part for single-page app needs. It can initiate and intercept navigations and manage or examine same-origin entries in the current browsing context. MDN labels it “Baseline 2026” and says it became newly available across the latest devices and browser versions in January 2026, while warning that older devices and browsers may not support it. Those compatibility details are time-sensitive: check MDN’s current support table against your actual browser requirements before adopting it.
The History API remains the established option for low-level entry updates and traversal. The Navigation API offers a broader navigation control surface, but whether it fits depends on browser support and how much navigation infrastructure your application already has. The documentation cited here does not establish a migration recommendation or compare specific router products.
