Use each platform’s built-in automated moderation to filter or hold risky chat, then have trusted human moderators review uncertain cases and respond to context. AI moderation is a first-pass aid, not a substitute for people: platforms describe different controls, and none promises perfect detection.
What AI moderation does—and what it does not do
On live platforms, automated moderation can help filter comments, hold potentially risky messages for review, or limit predictable problems with controls such as blocked terms and slow mode. The exact action depends on the platform. For example, YouTube and Twitch can hold messages for a moderator to review, while TikTok LIVE offers keyword filtering.
Keep a human in the loop. A moderator can consider context, decide whether a held message should appear, and handle behavior that a filter misses. YouTube says, “No system is perfect, but this feature can make it easier for you to moderate live chat on your live stream.”

Choose controls for the platform you use
| Platform | Automated action | Human oversight | Additional controls |
|---|---|---|---|
| YouTube Live | Basic holds potentially inappropriate live-chat messages; Strict holds a broader range. | The channel owner or a managing moderator can show or hide held messages. If nobody acts, they remain hidden. | Blocked words and slow mode. |
| Twitch | AutoMod holds potentially risky messages for moderator review before they appear to others. | Moderators review held messages and can use channel actions such as warnings, timeouts, and bans. | Blocked terms and phrases, link restrictions, slow mode, follower-only or subscriber-only modes, chat clearing, and Shield Mode. Some features may not be available to every account. |
| TikTok LIVE | Keyword filtering limits comments matching words the creator considers inappropriate or potentially against Community Guidelines. | Hosts and moderators should prepare to respond during the broadcast; guests’ content is the host’s responsibility in multi-guest LIVE sessions. | Hosts and moderators can add up to 500 words to the LIVE keyword list. Availability and eligibility can vary by market. |
These systems do not have an established, comparable accuracy or latency ranking. Choose based on the controls available in your account, your tolerance for false positives, and whether moderators can keep up with the chat. Feature availability can vary by account and region, so check the current creator settings before a broadcast.

How to hold inappropriate YouTube live-chat messages for review
- Prepare the filter before the stream. Open YouTube Studio and configure the live-chat moderation settings for the channel. Add terms you want blocked to the blocked-words list; use channel-specific terms rather than assuming one list fits every audience.
- Choose a message-holding level. Select Basic to hold potentially inappropriate messages or Strict to hold a broader range. A broader filter may also hold messages you would have allowed, so consider how quickly a moderator can review them.
- Assign a trusted managing moderator. Make sure someone with the appropriate channel permissions can review held messages. The channel owner or a managing moderator can show or hide them.
- Review held messages during the broadcast. Show a message if it is acceptable in context; hide it if it violates your rules. If nobody takes action, held messages remain hidden.
- Enable slow mode if chat moves too quickly. Slow mode limits how often a viewer can comment, giving moderators more time to review messages.
YouTube’s moderation controls and permission details are documented in its Moderate live chat guide. For broader live-stream safety guidance, see Avoid restrictions on YouTube live streaming.
How to turn on AutoMod for Twitch chat
- Enable AutoMod in your channel’s moderation settings. Choose a level your moderator team can realistically review; held messages need a human decision before they appear.
- Appoint reliable moderators. They should understand the channel rules and be available when the stream is live. Use warnings, timeouts, or bans as appropriate to respond to behavior that needs action.
- Add channel-specific blocked terms and link rules. Use blocked terms and phrases and link restrictions for predictable risks, then adjust them as your channel’s needs change.
- Reduce chat speed when needed. Use slow mode or follower-only or subscriber-only modes during surges. Twitch also documents chat clearing and Shield Mode among its channel controls.
- Consider a third-party bot only as an optional supplement. Twitch notes that bots can fill gaps, particularly in fast chat or during malicious raids. Check that a bot currently supports the features and platform workflow you need; no specific vendor or compatibility is established here.
Twitch cautions that “It is impossible for a bot or an automated system to catch everything or to be 100% accurate.” Its guidance on setting up channel moderation, moderating Twitch chatrooms, and its Community Guidelines explains the available controls and policy context.

How to filter comments during TikTok LIVE
- Prepare your keyword list before going live. Add words you consider inappropriate or potentially against TikTok’s Community Guidelines. Hosts and moderators can add up to 500 words to the LIVE keyword list.
- Brief moderators and guests. Agree on who will act when a comment needs attention and how guests should follow the broadcast’s expectations.
- Plan for real-time decisions. TikTok notes that a LIVE broadcast cannot be edited during the stream. In a multi-guest LIVE, the host is responsible for content streamed by guests.
- Check your account’s current access. TikTok says LIVE eligibility and feature availability can vary by market, and some features may not be available when a creator first starts using LIVE.
See TikTok’s LIVE safety guide, updated June 3, 2025, for its guidance on keyword filtering, real-time broadcasts, and guests.

Before going live
- Write short, specific chat rules that explain what is not allowed and what moderators may do.
- Configure the platform’s filters, blocked terms, and any link controls available to your account.
- Choose a moderation level that balances catching risky messages against holding acceptable ones for review.
- Assign trusted moderators and agree how they will handle held messages, repeat behavior, and sudden surges.
- For TikTok LIVE, prepare the keyword list and brief guests before the broadcast begins.
During the stream
- Have a moderator review held messages and take action on conduct the filter does not catch.
- Turn on slow mode or a restricted chat mode if the volume becomes difficult to manage.
- Use warnings, timeouts, or bans according to your rules and the platform’s available controls.
- Keep the moderation decision-maker available: a filter that holds a message does not resolve what to do with it.
After the stream
- Review recurring issues and update the rules, blocked terms, or keyword list before the next broadcast.
- Discuss false positives with moderators so the next filter setting is workable for both safety and participation.
Common problems and practical fixes
| Problem | Likely reason | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Acceptable messages are held or filtered. | The filter is catching a broader range of language than your channel intends. | Have a moderator review held messages, then adjust the moderation level or terms to fit your community. |
| Harmful or disruptive messages still appear. | Automated moderation is imperfect and cannot reliably resolve every context or behavior. | Keep trusted human moderators available, add relevant blocked terms, and use warnings, timeouts, bans, or restricted modes where appropriate. |
| Moderators cannot review messages fast enough. | Chat volume exceeds the team’s capacity. | Enable slow mode or a platform’s restricted chat modes. On Twitch, consider whether a suitable third-party bot can supplement the workflow. |
| A control or feature is missing from the account. | Availability may vary by platform, account, or market. | Check the current settings and official help for that account; do not assume a feature is available to every creator. |
| A TikTok LIVE situation cannot be corrected after it happens. | LIVE is broadcast in real time and cannot be edited during the stream. | Prepare keywords and guest expectations beforehand, and decide who can intervene while the broadcast is live. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If your live content is a prerecorded video or playlist rather than a camera broadcast, StreamNeo keeps a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The cloud keeps the stream running, so nothing has to stay on at home. It streams the video as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; if YouTube drops the stream, StreamNeo automatically recovers. The first day is free with no card. Monthly is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube streams from uploaded videos, not live camera broadcasts; it does not replace chat moderation, so use the platform’s moderation controls and human moderators for chat.
