Use OBS Studio to bring the presenter’s microphone and prerecorded music into the same stream as separately adjustable audio sources. Set levels, monitor the mix, and record and replay a rehearsal before going live. Separating the sources makes it easier to keep speech clear and lower or mute music when needed—but it does not grant permission to use the music.

Set up the voice-and-music mix in OBS

OBS Studio provides source faders, meters, mute buttons, and audio monitoring controls. The steps below use those controls to manage speech and music independently. The exact device names and routing options depend on your computer, operating system, and connected audio equipment.

  1. Add the microphone: In OBS, add the presenter’s microphone as an audio input source. Select the microphone or audio interface the presenter will use.
  2. Add the music playback: Add the output from the application or device playing the prerecorded tracks as a separate audio source. Depending on your system, this may be a desktop-audio source, an application capture, or an input from a physical mixer. Check that the method you choose captures the intended playback and does not also capture unwanted sounds.
  3. Check the sources separately: Speak into the microphone and play music one at a time. Confirm that each source appears on its own in the OBS Audio Mixer and that the correct meter responds.
  4. Set levels at the source first: Adjust microphone gain on the microphone, interface, or physical mixer, and adjust playback volume in the music application or its device. OBS recommends starting with the device or application that generates the sound before making final adjustments with OBS faders.
  5. Balance in OBS: Use each source’s fader to set the final relationship between voice and music. Keep speech clearly audible over the music; lower the music during speech and mute it during announcements if that suits the show.
  6. Monitor the result: Listen at the source device and use OBS Audio Monitoring to hear the mix. Headphones are a practical way to check what is being sent without relying only on meters.
  7. Record and review a rehearsal: Record a representative session in OBS, including normal speech, music, and transitions. Play back the recording before broadcasting to catch balance, routing, or left/right channel problems.

Set levels by listening, not by meter alone

OBS’s Audio Mixer Guide advises placing speech in the upper range of yellow and background music in green. Treat those meter zones as a guide, not a guarantee of a good mix: sounds that appear equally loud on meters can be perceived differently. Listen to the rehearsal at a comfortable volume, especially during the quietest speech and loudest music. Avoid letting speech approach the red region, where clipping can cause distortion.

If speech is hard to understand, first lower the music during talking and check microphone placement and gain. Do not compensate for an overly loud music source by pushing the microphone into clipping. If you change the music or microphone level in OBS, record and review another short sample.

Clear the music for live use and replay

Audio routing and music permission are separate issues. YouTube says it scans all live streams for third-party content, including another live broadcast. If it detects a match, it may replace the stream with a placeholder and warn you to stop using the content; if the content remains, YouTube may interrupt or terminate the stream. A test broadcast does not establish that you have permission.

YouTube’s live-stream terms place responsibility on the content provider to obtain the rights needed for worldwide exploitation of live content, including applicable music rights from artists, labels, publishers, and other rights participants. Consider the tracks, territories, and whether the broadcast will be archived or replayed: permission for one use does not necessarily cover the others. The specific rights required depend on those details.

  • Direct mixing of PC/gaming sounds into the streaming output
  • Ultra-low noise analog mixer for streaming, podcasting and recording

Even if you have a license for third-party music, YouTube says that a live stream may still be interrupted unless the rights holder adds your channel to its Content ID allowlist. Ask the owner about allowlisting before the broadcast. If YouTube archives the stream, a Content ID claim may also be made after it ends.

Check library terms track by track

  • YouTube Audio Library: YouTube describes Audio Library music and sound effects as copyright-safe. Check the selected track’s terms and whether it requires attribution; Creative Commons tracks require credit in the video description. YouTube’s guidance focuses on use in videos, so do not assume it is blanket clearance for every live-radio format or use outside YouTube. Check the live-stream terms as well.
  • Creator Music: YouTube’s current help pages say Creator Music does not support licensing for live content, and its track-use details exclude live streams. Track availability and supported regions can vary.
  • Other music libraries: A “royalty-free” or “copyright-free” label alone does not establish that a track is cleared for a YouTube live stream, an archived replay, all intended territories, or Content ID processing. Check the actual license scope and ask how the provider handles Content ID allowlisting. YouTube says it cannot vouch for libraries other than its Audio Library.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the show is built from uploaded recordings rather than a live microphone presentation, StreamNeo can keep a YouTube channel live from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It plays uploaded videos, not a live camera or microphone, so it is not a replacement for the OBS voice-and-music workflow above.

Troubleshoot the mix before broadcast

  • The microphone meter does not move: Check that OBS selected the intended microphone or interface, that the device is connected, and that its input level is not muted at the device or operating-system level.
  • The music meter does not move: Confirm the music is playing and that OBS is capturing the correct application or output. If using a mixer, check that the playback device is connected to the input being captured.
  • Music is too loud under speech: Lower the playback level at its source or move its OBS fader down. Record another sample and listen back rather than judging from meters alone.
  • Speech distorts: Reduce microphone gain at the device or interface and verify that the OBS meter no longer approaches red. Re-record a short passage to confirm the sound is clean.
  • Sound is missing from one side: Check device channel settings and OBS source configuration, then listen to a local recording with headphones to verify left/right playback.
  • The mix sounds different in the recording than while monitoring: Check which source OBS is monitoring and which sources are being recorded. Rehearse with the same routing and settings intended for the live stream.
  • YouTube warns about or interrupts the stream for music: Stop using the matched content. Confirm the license covers live use and replay, and contact the rights holder about adding your channel to the Content ID allowlist. A license does not guarantee that a live interruption will be avoided.

OBS licensing and source notes

OBS Project describes OBS Studio as open source under GPLv2, free for any use including commercial use, and without watermarks or feature limitations. The mix workflow here relies on OBS’s documented mixer controls; device availability and exact routing depend on the setup.
