To mirror a website, use a crawler to download a defined set of its pages and linked files into a local directory, then inspect that copy offline. HTTrack offers a guided interface as well as command-line controls; GNU Wget is a command-line alternative for recursive downloading and link conversion. Neither guarantees a complete copy of a modern site: JavaScript-built URLs, interactive features, and protected content can be missed. Only copy sites and material you are authorized to copy.

What a website mirror is—and what it is not

A website mirror is a local collection of downloaded pages and files arranged so you can browse some of the site’s structure offline. Depending on the crawl, that may include HTML pages, images, stylesheets, and documents, with links adjusted to point to the saved files. It can be useful for reference, travel without reliable internet, or as a starting point for an authorized migration.

A mirror is not automatically a complete backup, a working copy of the site’s application, or a replacement for its hosting. A crawler can save resources it can reach, but pages may depend on server-side functions, authentication, scripts, or interactions that are not preserved locally. Treat the result as a copy to verify, not as proof that every page and feature has been captured.

Before you start: permission, scope, and storage

Check whether you may copy the site

Check the site’s terms and obtain authorization where appropriate before crawling it. HTTrack’s FAQ advises asking permission to create a mirror. GNU Wget’s overview says the program respects robots.txt, but a crawler’s behavior does not settle whether you have permission to copy, redistribute, or access particular material. Do not use mirroring to bypass logins or other access controls. Legal rules vary by jurisdiction and circumstances.

Choose a bounded scope

Decide whether you need the whole authorized site or only a section. Starting at a relevant page or directory and keeping the crawl limited to what you need makes the result easier to store and review. HTTrack exposes scope, filters, and limits through its interface and command-line options. A small, purposeful mirror is generally easier to check than an unbounded crawl.

Choose a destination with room to grow

Save the mirror to a local directory with adequate free space. The amount required depends on the site and the resources the crawl retrieves; the available documentation does not establish a universal storage estimate. If a mirror is large or needs to be retained as an archive, a separate external drive is an optional storage aid, not a requirement.

How to mirror a website with HTTrack

HTTrack provides a guided interface for users who prefer not to build a crawl from command-line options, along with a command-line utility for more deliberate scope and filtering. The exact screens and labels can vary by edition or platform, so follow the current interface and project documentation rather than assuming every installation looks identical.

  1. Choose a new project. Give the project a recognizable name and select a destination directory with enough available space.
  2. Enter the authorized starting URL. Use the site or section you intend to copy, not an unrelated starting page. A narrower starting point helps keep the crawl focused.
  3. Set the crawl scope and filters. Limit what HTTrack follows to the pages and files needed for your purpose. If you use command-line options, consult HTTrack’s current command-line guide for the relevant scope and limit settings.
  4. Start the crawl and let it complete. Site size, response behavior, and the selected scope affect how much is downloaded and how long it takes. HTTrack documents the ability to resume interrupted work.
  5. Open the local entry page. Browse from the saved entry page and follow internal links to confirm that local navigation works.
  6. Inspect important assets and pages. Check key images, stylesheets, and documents, and note missing areas. Do not assume that a completed crawl means every live-site feature is present.

HTTrack also documents an update mode for refreshing an existing mirror. Use it when you need to bring a saved copy up to date, then inspect the refreshed result: the live site may have changed, and crawler behavior does not guarantee that every change will be reflected.

How to mirror a website with GNU Wget

GNU Wget is a command-line utility that supports recursive web downloads and link conversion for offline viewing. It is a practical choice if you are comfortable working in a terminal and want to use Wget’s documented recursive-download options. The GNU Wget 1.25.0 manual overview says Wget respects the Robot Exclusion Standard (robots.txt).

Because the appropriate recursion, scope, and link-conversion settings depend on what you are authorized to retrieve and how the site is organized, consult the current Wget manual before running a crawl. Set the destination deliberately, keep the crawl bounded, and check the downloaded entry page and its links locally afterward. A successful command is not, by itself, evidence that the mirror is complete.

Verify the mirror offline

Disconnect from the network or otherwise test the saved files without relying on the live site. Open the local entry page and follow important internal links. Inspect the material that matters to you, such as key pages, images, stylesheets, and documents. Keep a list of missing or broken areas; that is more useful than describing an unverified crawl as a full backup.

  • Links: Check that important internal links lead to local files rather than requiring the live site.
  • Assets: Look for missing images, stylesheets, and documents on representative pages.
  • Dynamic behavior: Note features that need scripts, a server, user input, or an account and may not function in a static local copy.
  • Coverage: Compare the pages you need with the pages actually saved, and record what the crawl did not capture.

What a crawler may miss

JavaScript-built URLs and page content

HTTrack’s command-line guide states that HTTrack does not run JavaScript. If a page constructs URLs at runtime, the crawler may not discover those URLs, leaving their pages out of the mirror. Content assembled in the browser may also be absent or incomplete. Verify such pages manually instead of assuming the crawler will reproduce a site’s client-side behavior.

Interactive and login-protected areas

Interactive pages and login-protected material need special handling and manual verification; they are not guaranteed captures. A site may require a session, user action, or server response that a simple downloaded page cannot reproduce. Do not try to bypass access controls. For a migration or archive that depends on restricted content, arrange an authorized export or another approved method with the site owner.

Changing sites and interrupted work

An interrupted crawl can leave an incomplete directory. HTTrack documents resuming interrupted work, while its update mode can refresh an existing mirror. After either operation, check the resulting local copy. The source may have changed while you were working, and a refreshed crawl still should not be treated as a guarantee that every difference has been captured.

Choosing between HTTrack and Wget

The available project documentation describes capabilities, not a controlled head-to-head benchmark. Neither tool can be called universally faster or more complete on that basis. Choose according to the workflow and verification you need.

Troubleshooting a website mirror

The local page opens, but links go online or fail

Check that you opened the saved entry page and that the crawl included the linked pages within its scope. Review the scope and filters, then repeat or update the crawl as appropriate. Inspect key links offline rather than assuming that the presence of a page means its entire path was saved.

Images or styles are missing

Check whether those resources were within the crawl’s scope and whether their files exist in the saved directory. Test more than one page and note specific missing assets. If the site loads resources dynamically, a crawler may not discover all of them.

A page or feature is blank or incomplete

Determine whether the missing content is assembled by JavaScript, requires a login, or appears only after an interaction. HTTrack does not run JavaScript, and interactive or protected content is not guaranteed to be captured. Verify the required content through an authorized method rather than treating a static copy as a working application.

The crawl stopped before it finished

Check the destination directory and available storage, then use HTTrack’s documented resume capability if that is the tool you chose. After resuming, inspect the local copy for gaps. If the source changed in the meantime, verify the refreshed pages as well.

Practical rules for a dependable archive

  • Keep the scope limited to the material you are authorized to copy and actually need.
  • Preserve the local directory rather than moving individual files out of their saved structure; local links may depend on that arrangement.
  • Record the starting point and the portions you verified so you know what the mirror does and does not contain.
  • Use HTTrack’s resume or update capabilities when appropriate, but inspect the result after either operation.
  • Keep a separate copy of a valuable archive if needed; storage requirements depend on the site, not a universal recommended capacity.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does mirroring a website make it publicly available?

No. A local mirror is a collection of downloaded files on your device; publishing or redistributing it is a separate matter and may require permission.

Can I use a screenshot API to make an offline website mirror?

No. A screenshot API returns an image or PDF capture, not the site’s recursively downloaded pages and linked files.
