To migrate Protractor tests for an Angular application, replace the test runner and translate the suite’s locators, actions, assertions, synchronization, and CI setup. This is primarily a test-code migration—not a change to Angular application code. There is no universal replacement: Angular currently documents setup paths for Cypress and Playwright, and the right choice depends on your browser coverage, team, existing helpers, and CI requirements.
What happened to Protractor?
The Angular team proposed ending Protractor development in an RFC opened on April 5, 2021. It cited Protractor’s legacy Control Flow model, its conflict with modern async/await and Selenium WebDriver 4, and the cost of removing that design while maintaining the project. The RFC anticipated development ending around Angular v15 and named August 2023 as an end-of-life milestone; those were proposed dates, not the repository’s eventual archive date. The GitHub repository records that Protractor was archived on July 29, 2024. Angular/Protractor maintainers’ RFC and archive notice.
The RFC reported close to 1,000 responses to an Angular E2E survey conducted in January 2021, with fewer than 20% of respondents reporting Protractor use. These are historical survey results, not current market-share figures. The Angular team’s useful conclusion remains: “there is no one-size-fits-all solution for all Angular projects out there.”
Which runner should replace Protractor?
Angular’s current end-to-end testing page documents setup paths for Cypress and Playwright. The Protractor maintainers also listed Selenium WebDriver, Puppeteer, TestCafe, and WebdriverIO as alternatives. Those choices are not interchangeable in their APIs or operating models, and the sources do not establish a universal winner. Angular’s E2E documentation.

| Decision factor | Questions to answer |
|---|---|
| Browser coverage | Which browser engines and browser versions must run in CI? |
| WebDriver compatibility | Does your team need standards-based WebDriver compatibility or existing Selenium infrastructure? |
| Rewrite scope | How much of the suite depends on custom helpers, page objects, Protractor-specific locators, or Control Flow? |
| Workflow | What Angular CLI integration, parallel execution, reporting, and debugging workflow does the team need? |
| Application scope | Does the suite cover non-Angular pages, multiple origins, or other browsing contexts? |
| Synchronization | How does the destination runner wait for asynchronous UI updates, and are there app-specific edge cases? |
Selenium WebDriver may feel API-close because Protractor uses it underneath, but the RFC cautions that the APIs are not exact replacements. If Control Flow remains in the suite, remove that assumption rather than expecting Selenium calls to preserve it. Compare your requirements and confirm the runner’s current Angular and CI setup in its official documentation before committing to a migration.
How do I migrate Protractor tests to Playwright?
Translate the test’s behavior, not just its syntax. Playwright’s official guide maps Protractor locators to page.locator(...), navigation to await page.goto(...), and browser URL reads to page.url(). Tests that perform asynchronous browser actions should be asynchronous and await those actions. Playwright’s Protractor migration guide.

For example, a Protractor test that visits a page, enters a value, submits a form, and checks the result should become a Playwright test that performs the same user-visible scenario with Playwright locators and assertions. Use the locator and assertion forms from your installed Playwright test setup; a selector that happened to match the old markup is not automatically resilient or correct in the new test. Prefer stable, semantic selectors where your application supports them, and verify each selector against the rendered interface.
The migration guide includes a line-by-line example and API cheat sheet, not a guarantee of automatic conversion. Treat it as a mapping aid, then validate that each converted test still proves the intended user outcome.

How do I migrate Protractor tests to Cypress?
Use Cypress’s command and query model instead of mechanically wrapping Protractor calls. Cypress’s guide maps browser.get to cy.visit, and browser back or forward actions to cy.go. Cypress commands and queries retry under their documented rules; assertions should express the expected UI state rather than relying on a Protractor-style wait. Cypress’s Protractor migration guide.
One difference worth accounting for is Angular coupling: Protractor assumes Angular unless told otherwise, whereas Cypress does not require disabling Angular behavior simply to visit a non-Angular page. Review non-Angular portions of a mixed application on their own terms instead of carrying over Protractor assumptions.

What replaces waitForAngular?
Usually, do not replace every waitForAngular() call with another explicit wait. Protractor used Angular Testability to detect app stability, coupling its wait behavior to Angular internals. The Angular RFC notes that other tools can use retry strategies without requiring the test platform to understand Angular. That does not mean every application becomes stable under generic retries; choose synchronization based on the destination framework’s model and the UI behavior being tested. Angular’s Protractor E2E RFC.
Playwright
Playwright says its built-in auto-waiting makes Protractor’s waitForAngular unnecessary in the general case. For an exceptional Angular 2+ synchronization need, its migration guide documents a workaround using window.getAllAngularTestabilities() and Testability.whenStable. It also describes a polyfill that relies on Protractor client-side scripts. These are documented edge-case options, not a default wrapper for every test; the simpler Testability example is specifically for Angular 2+. See the Playwright migration guide for the implementation details.

Cypress
Cypress retries DOM queries and commands until matching elements appear, with command failure governed by defaultCommandTimeout. Its migration guide demonstrates querying and asserting content without a separate Protractor-style wait. Use that retrying model where appropriate; avoid arbitrary sleeps that make a test slower without making its condition more meaningful. Retry behavior is not identical to Playwright auto-waiting, so follow the destination runner’s own documentation.
Can I convert Protractor tests automatically?
Do not assume an arbitrary suite can be converted safely with one click. Playwright supplies mappings and an example. Cypress published a migrator article on August 21, 2023 describing a hands-on educational playground that converts pasted snippets and links to the Cypress APIs used; that article said it was not intended to transform whole folders or suites at that time. Because that capability statement is dated, check the current tool before relying on it. Neither source promises complete automatic migration. Cypress migrator article, August 21, 2023.
Effort depends on project-specific details the available guidance cannot estimate: custom Protractor wrappers, page objects, browser-specific behavior, AngularJS locators versus modern Angular markup, non-Angular pages, test-data setup, and CI infrastructure. A small pilot will show which of those affect your suite before you commit to converting everything.
A safe migration sequence
- Inventory the suite. Record important scenarios, helpers, custom locators, page objects, setup and teardown, browser configuration, environment assumptions, and CI commands. This is a practical risk-control step, not an official prescribed checklist.
- Choose a destination. Use your browser, WebDriver, CI, team, and rewrite requirements to choose a runner. Confirm its current Angular CLI integration and CI setup in official documentation; integrations can change.
- Pick a representative pilot flow. Select a small test that covers navigation, a form interaction, asynchronous rendering, and an assertion. Convert it manually using the destination runner’s official guide.
- Make asynchronous behavior explicit. Remove Protractor Control Flow assumptions. In Playwright, use asynchronous tests and await actions; in Cypress, use its command, query, and retry style.
- Translate locators and assertions. Validate selectors against the rendered UI and check that assertions prove the same user-visible outcome as the old test.
- Migrate in small groups. Run the old and new coverage side by side where practical until critical scenarios are represented in the replacement suite.
- Update execution infrastructure. After the pilot works in the target environment, update dependencies, configuration, scripts, browser or driver provisioning, and CI jobs. Protractor’s older Selenium Server and WebDriver Manager tutorial is historical context, not current installation advice.
- Retire Protractor deliberately. Remove its runner and dependencies after the replacement covers required scenarios and the team has verified CI output.
