Keep the WordPress site private while importing, then check post content and visibility before launch. The importer is documented as transferring posts, not every feature of a LiveJournal journal.
Choose the LiveJournal import route WordPress actually offers
WordPress’s official instructions describe two routes. Its Tools Import screen documentation says: “Import posts from a LiveJournal XML export file.” The WordPress Advanced Administration Handbook, by contrast, describes installing and running the LiveJournal importer with a LiveJournal username and password. These pages do not establish that both routes are available in every WordPress installation.
Check the importer in your own WordPress dashboard before preparing files or entering credentials. If it asks for an XML file, you need an export in that format; if it offers a connection flow, confirm it is the expected WordPress importer before supplying account details. The exact LiveJournal export controls and their availability are not established here, so don’t assume every account can produce the same file.
Prepare a private WordPress destination
Import into a site that is not publicly accessible while you verify the results. This is especially important if the journal contains private or friends-locked entries: a legacy conversion workflow has documented privacy problems, although that report does not show that every current importer mishandles privacy.

If you are importing into an existing WordPress site, back up its files and database first. WordPress’s migration guidance recommends a backup before migration changes and warns that URL changes can leave old references behind. It also cautions that broad database search-and-replace operations can break serialized data.
Run the importer and verify the imported posts
- In the WordPress dashboard, open Tools → Import and select LiveJournal. Install or run the importer if WordPress prompts you.
- Follow the workflow shown by that importer: provide the XML export if requested, or use the connection option if it is offered and you have confirmed the interface.
- Keep the site private after the import. Review representative posts from different dates and visibility levels before launch.
Check post counts, dates, formatting, links, comments if present, images, and the visibility of public, private, and friends-locked entries. WordPress describes this importer as importing posts; don’t treat a successful post import as proof that every LiveJournal feature or setting came across.
Check media and rebuild the site’s presentation
Content import does not reproduce LiveJournal’s design, theme, or plugins. You will need to choose or recreate the presentation in WordPress separately. The Learn WordPress import and export tutorial also notes that media not attached to or embedded in a post or page may not be included in an XML export. Inspect images and other media independently, and locate or add files that are missing.
Use legacy conversion scripts only as a technical fallback
If the built-in importer does not work for your setup, community projects describe alternative conversion routes. The ljtowordpress project converts an LJBackup dump into WordPress-friendly XML using Python. The lj2wp repository describes a longer route involving an ljdump export, conversion to an older WordPress import format, import into WordPress 2.7.1, and export again for a modern WordPress installation.

These are technically involved community-maintained approaches, not verified current defaults. Review the code and compatibility before using them. The lj2wp report warns that its older importer could make entries public and did not properly support friends-locked content; manually inspect privacy settings if you take that route.

Do not assume LiveJournal will automatically redirect old journal URLs to the new WordPress addresses. The available WordPress migration guidance addresses WordPress-to-WordPress moves, not redirect support from LiveJournal accounts. Before changing URLs on an existing WordPress site, review its permalink configuration and follow WordPress’s migration precautions; verify separately whether your LiveJournal account and destination setup support any redirects you need.
