You can do this in Hyper-V Manager with Edit Disk > Merge or with PowerShell’s Merge-VHD cmdlet. The chain must be detached when the merge begins.
What a differencing-disk merge does
A differencing disk stores changes relative to a parent virtual disk. Hyper-V checkpoints commonly create .avhdx child files that depend on an older .vhdx or another .avhdx. Merging copies the child’s changes into a destination child or parent and folds that layer into the chain.
Microsoft describes Merge-VHD as an offline operation: the virtual-disk chain must not be attached when the merge starts. Do not merge while the VM is running, paused, saved, or otherwise using the disks.
Before you merge
- Shut down the VM from the guest operating system or Hyper-V Manager. Confirm its state is Off.
- Make a backup or copy of the complete chain, including every parent and child file. A successful merge leaves the source file on disk, but that source is no longer a valid virtual-disk file.
- Ensure the destination volume has enough free space for the merge and that you have permission to read and write every file.
- Do not rename, move, or delete a parent until the chain has been inspected and consolidated.
Inspect the chain and identify the merge order
Always establish each disk’s path, parent, and type before changing anything. In PowerShell, run:

Get-VMHardDiskDrive -VMName <VMName> |
ForEach-Object { Get-VHD -Path $_.Path | Select-Object Path,ParentPath,VHDType }
The output gives you the configured disk path, its ParentPath, and its VHDType. Follow ParentPath repeatedly until you reach the base disk. The active, youngest .avhdx is the first source to merge.
| Chain position | Role | Merge action |
|---|---|---|
| Youngest child | Current active differencing disk | Merge into its immediate parent first |
| Intermediate child | Older checkpoint layer | After the younger layer succeeds, merge it into its parent |
| Base parent | Usually the original .vhdx |
Receives the final layer; keep the resulting parent path for the VM |
For example, with Child4.avhdx based on Child3.avhdx, which is based on Child2.avhdx, merge Child4 into Child2 as Microsoft’s example does. That operation folds the intervening layer into the destination. For a straightforward one-layer chain, merge the AVHDX directly into its parent VHDX.

Method 1: Hyper-V Manager
- Power off the VM and verify that no backup, export, or other process has the virtual disks open.
- Open Hyper-V Manager.
- In the Actions pane, choose Edit Disk.
- Browse to and select the current child file, normally the newest
.avhdx. - Choose Merge.
- Select To the parent virtual disk, then complete the wizard.
- For a multi-layer chain, repeat with the next older child, always proceeding from youngest to oldest.
- After the final merge, check the VM’s hard-drive setting. If it still points to an AVHDX or an old location, edit the setting and select the resulting VHDX path.
The GUI is useful for a single layer or when you want the wizard to expose the selected parent. It does not remove the old source files for you; handle those only after verification and according to your backup policy.
Method 2: PowerShell with Merge-VHD
For one layer, use:
Merge-VHD -Path C:VMdisk.avhdx -DestinationPath C:VMparent.vhdx
Replace both paths with the values confirmed during inspection. The source is the child being folded in; the destination is its immediate parent or another valid destination in the same differencing chain. Do not attach the chain during the operation.

For several layers, run one merge at a time:
- Identify the youngest child from the VM configuration and
ParentPathoutput. - Merge that child into its parent.
- Reinspect the remaining chain and confirm the next child’s parent relationship.
- Continue upward until the desired base VHDX contains all changes.
PowerShell is preferable when you need repeatable commands, logging, or consolidation across multiple VMs. Stop after any error rather than guessing at a destination path.
DiskPart alternative
Microsoft’s DiskPart reference also supports merging a differencing VHD with its parent. The general sequence is to start DiskPart, select the relevant virtual disk, and issue merge vdisk. Because checkpoint chains can involve Hyper-V metadata as well as files, Hyper-V Manager or Merge-VHD generally provides a clearer workflow for identifying the active child and troubleshooting path mismatches.

What happens to the AVHDX files
A successful merge does not automatically delete the source child files. However, Microsoft states that the source files remain on disk but are no longer valid virtual-disk files after completion. Keep the backup until the VM has booted and its data has been checked; then remove obsolete files only after confirming they are not referenced by another chain, backup, or export.

The merge says the disk is in use
Confirm that the VM is fully off, not merely paused or saved. Check for backup software, replication, antivirus scanning, management tools, or another VM that has opened the same file. Retry only after all handles are closed.

The parent cannot be found
Use Get-VHD to read ParentPath and verify that the exact file exists at that location. Restore a missing base or parent from backup when possible. A child cannot reconstruct blocks that depended on a missing parent, so the remaining AVHDX alone is not a complete replacement disk.
The path or destination is wrong
Compare the VM’s configured path with the inspection output, including drive letters, folder names, and file extensions. The destination must be the intended parent in the chain, not an unrelated VHDX.
There is not enough storage
Free space on the volume containing the destination or move the operation to storage with adequate capacity, preserving the chain and permissions. Do not delete parents or source files to create space before the merge is safely complete.
The VM will not boot afterward
Leave the VM powered off. Reinspect the chain, confirm every parent exists, and verify the VM’s hard-disk setting points to the final merged VHDX rather than an obsolete AVHDX or old path. Correct the configuration, then boot and check the guest’s volumes and applications.

Quick Recap
Choosing the right workflow
| Situation | Recommended approach | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| One checkpoint layer and a clear parent | Hyper-V Manager or one Merge-VHD command |
Both perform the same offline merge; the GUI is easier to follow, while PowerShell is concise. |
| Several AVHDX layers | PowerShell inspection followed by child-to-parent merges | Explicit ParentPath checks reduce the risk of reversing the order. |
| VM metadata and files disagree | Inspect with Get-VMHardDiskDrive and Get-VHD before using the GUI or cmdlet |
The configured path may not be the file you found manually. |
| Missing parent or damaged chain | Restore the complete chain or a known-good backup first | A merge cannot recreate data held only by a missing parent. |
