Measure the exact TV model—not a generic “85-inch” estimate—before ordering. The 85-inch label is the screen’s diagonal, not the television’s outside width. Check the model’s dimensions for the setup you plan to use, then compare its width, height, depth, base footprint and weight with your wall or furniture.
Find the exact model’s dimensions first
Choose the television by its full model number and download the current manufacturer dimension sheet and manual. Product dimensions, stand placement and mount-hole spacing vary by model, so a size chart is only a rough reference. Samsung’s TV size guide gives an 85-inch reference of 1885 × 1080 mm, while warning that actual product dimensions can vary.
For context, Samsung’s model-specific QN800C 85-inch dimension sheet lists a width of 1893.4 mm and a height of 1077.7–1083.0 mm without the stand. These examples are roughly 74–75 inches wide, not a guaranteed range for every 85-inch TV. Use the exact model’s dimensions for a final fit check.

Measure the usable wall or furniture surface
Measure the space the TV can actually occupy, rather than the full wall or the furniture’s advertised width. Note width, height and depth, and account for anything that reduces usable space or blocks installation.

- On a wall, include trim, shelves, doors, nearby equipment, outlets and cable routes in your measurements.
- On a stand, measure the usable top width and depth, including any lip, raised edge or other obstruction.
- Check the TV manual for required clearances and allow access to cables and outlets.
Check a TV stand against the base, not just the screen
For furniture, compare the stand’s usable supported surface with the TV’s dimensions with its stand attached. Confirm the actual foot or base placement and depth; the TV’s overall width alone does not show whether its feet will sit safely on the furniture. Also compare the TV’s listed weight with the furniture’s rated capacity.
Stand dimensions are model-specific. For example, Sony lists a 1532 mm (60 5/16 in) stand width for the KD-85X80K, 85X80CK and 85X85K—not a universal width for 85-inch televisions. Its support page identifies these figures as approximate and provides dimensions for the named models.

For wall mounting, match the bracket to the exact TV
Compare the TV’s mounting-hole spacing and the bracket’s supported pattern, mount type and weight limit. Check the manual for fastener requirements and make sure they suit the wall and installation. Screen size alone does not establish that a bracket will fit.
Hole spacing can differ between TVs of the same screen size. Sony lists a 400 × 400 mm bracket-hole pattern for the three named models above; Samsung’s QN800C 85-inch sheet specifies a 600 × 400 mm VESA pattern. Neither pattern should be assumed to fit another TV. Sony instructs owners to use a bracket specified for their TV and consult its manual; it recommends mounting by Sony dealers or licensed contractors. Samsung advises confirming measurements using the specific TV for critical installations.

Measure viewing distance separately
Viewing distance is a comfort consideration, not a physical-fit test. Samsung Canada’s size guide gives 2.6 m (8.5 ft) as a general viewing-distance reference and 2.2 m (7.1 ft) as a recommended 4K viewing distance. Treat these as reference points, not installation rules; they do not tell you whether the TV fits a wall or stand.
