Measure from your usual seated position to the planned screen location, then compare that distance with the TV’s diagonal size and check the set’s actual width and height against the space. Room dimensions alone do not determine the best TV size: viewing distance, resolution, viewing style, placement and comfort all matter.
Measure the viewing distance and available space
- Measure your viewing distance. From your normal seated position, measure to the spot where the screen will sit—not to the wall if the TV will be on a stand set forward of it. This couch-to-TV measurement is the starting point recommended by THX and Samsung.
- Measure the installation area. Check the usable width and height at the intended location, allowing for the stand, mount and nearby furniture or other obstructions. A diagonal-size recommendation cannot tell you whether the product will physically fit.
- Check the model’s full dimensions. A TV’s advertised size is the diagonal measurement of its screen, from one screen corner to the opposite corner; it is not the screen’s width. Overall dimensions differ by model, so compare the manufacturer’s product dimensions with your measured space.
Use viewing distance as a guide, not a strict rule
Manufacturers offer slightly different distance rules because they account for different viewing preferences. These are useful reference points, not universal standards for every room or viewer.

The distance formulas use the same units for screen diagonal and seating distance. Samsung’s guide describes a comfortable, cinematic field of view as approximately 30–40 degrees and notes that higher-resolution TVs can be viewed closer while retaining image clarity. LG’s 4K range likewise makes preference part of the decision: a closer seat can feel immersive, but some viewers may find the screen too imposing.

Compare the distance with example TV sizes
Samsung’s Caribbean guide gives the following examples. They are Samsung reference values, not universal requirements; the actual product dimensions vary by model.

Use the distance that suits how you watch, then confirm the physical measurements. If two sizes are plausible, compare their widths and heights with the installation area and consider whether you prefer a closer, more immersive picture or a more relaxed view.
Check sightline, room use and placement
- Assess screen height from your seat. THX recommends a line of sight more or less aligned with the screen center and suggests keeping the viewer’s gaze within 15 degrees above or below it. Avoid choosing a mount height based only on wall space; THX also cautions that elevating a 4K/UHD display can distort picture quality.
- Account for the room layout. Consider where people usually sit, whether the TV must fit an opening or stand, and whether furniture or circulation space constrains the location.
- Match the size to your use and budget. Distance guidance narrows the options, but intended viewing style, available space, resolution and what you want to spend also affect the choice.
A practical way to choose between sizes
- Write down the seated viewing distance and the available screen width and height.
- Use Samsung’s 1.2-times-diagonal rule as one reference, and LG’s 1.2–1.6-times range if you are considering a 4K TV and want to compare immersive with relaxed viewing.
- Shortlist the sizes that suit your viewing distance, then check the exact dimensions of each model rather than relying on diagonal size alone.
- Before buying or mounting, sit in the usual viewing position and check that the screen center is near your line of sight and the placement works with the room.
These recommendations come from THX and manufacturer guidance—THX, Samsung Caribbean and LG UAE—not a single standardized formula. LG’s cited guide is regional, and TV dimensions and availability vary by model and market.
