Measure the washer opening, the space needed for hookups and an open door or lid, and the entire delivery route before ordering. Then compare those measurements with the installation guide for the exact washer: cabinet dimensions alone do not tell you whether it will fit or operate properly.
What to measure before you choose a washer
Use a tape measure and record usable width, height, and depth at the washer’s actual location. Measure the narrowest points, not just the room’s overall footprint. Note anything that reduces usable space, including floor or wall molding, door trim, pipes, and shelves. For height, measure to the lowest obstruction, such as the underside of a cabinet.
Washer dimensions describe the cabinet, not necessarily the full installed footprint. Hoses, connections, the open door or lid, and space needed for installation can change the fit. LG’s Laundry Installation Guide cautions, “Be sure to check ALL dimensions, including depth, to ensure a proper fit.” Read the LG Laundry Installation Guide.
How to measure the installation space
- Measure usable width. Measure between the closest obstructions at the washer’s position. Check more than one height if trim, a counter, or nearby fixtures make the opening narrower in one place.
- Measure usable height. Measure from the floor to the lowest obstruction. Include any counter or cabinet above the washer; for a top-loader, leave enough room for the lid to open fully.
- Measure depth. Measure from the back wall or obstruction to the front edge of the available space. Record molding, trim, or other protrusions that affect where the washer can sit.
- Mark the hookups. Note the locations of the water supply, drain, and electrical or gas connection, as applicable. Allow the rear space specified by the installation instructions for the model and setup you plan to use.
- Check the operating space. For a front-loader, confirm that the door can open and that there is room to load and unload. For a top-loader, confirm that the lid can open beneath any overhead obstruction.
Clearance figures vary by product and context. Whirlpool offers at least 6 inches behind appliances as general planning guidance for hoses and ventilation, while LG’s front-loader checklist specifies at least 4 inches behind the units it covers. These are not interchangeable universal requirements: follow the instructions for the selected washer. Whirlpool also suggests approximately 4 feet of space in front for front-load access; treat that as a planning suggestion and check the model’s door-open dimensions and your layout. Measure the delivery route, not just the laundry opening
A washer may fit in its final location but be too difficult to maneuver there. Starting at the delivery entrance, measure the narrowest usable width and height along the full route: doorways, halls, turns, landings, and stairs. Account for handles, latches, shelves, and other protrusions. Compare the route with the product’s delivery dimensions and consider whether the appliance can make each turn.
Some manufacturer guides give route thresholds for particular products. For example, LG’s dimensions and minimum-space figures apply to the washer and dryer pair covered in its guide; they should not be treated as a universal rule for other appliances. See the LG Laundry Installation Guide PDF.

Compare your measurements with the exact washer
Before buying, write down the opening and route measurements, then compare them with the selected washer’s published width, height, depth, and installation instructions. Check door-open dimensions for a front-loader and lid clearance for a top-loader. If you plan to use a pedestal or install the washer under a counter, include that configuration in your check. A “standard size” label is not enough to establish fit.

The examples show why the exact model’s installation guide should decide the fit. Keep width, height, depth, rear clearance, operating space, and delivery-route dimensions distinct; they describe different constraints and should not be added together as if they were measurements in the same direction.
